(2026·浙江省绍兴市高一期末检测)
For North Atlantic right whales, every day has become a struggle for survival. There are only around 380 left in the world. The two major threats they face are ship strikes and entanglements (缠绕) in fishing tools.
素能提升练
Research shows ships travelling at slower speeds can save right whales from a deadly encounter. The government must require ships to slow down in key areas like the Cabot Strait, which is a 110-kilometre-wide gap that right whales travel through. It is very hard for fast-moving ships to avoid crashing into slow-moving right whales.A ship strike can result in injuries or death.Researchers have found that pregnant females and mothers with calves may be more sensitive to ship strikes,as they spend more time resting and nursing at the surface.
Slowing ships down to 10 knots or less can reduce the power of a crash by 86 percent. The Canadian government put in place a voluntary slowdown in the Cabot Strait as a trial in 2020 and 2021,but a two-year investigation shows that ships are still going too fast.During the trial slowdown in the Cabot Strait,Oceana Canada tracked the speed of ships, finding 68 percent of ships travelled at speeds over 10 knots and 43 percent exceeded 12 knots.Oceana Canada is calling on Transport Canada and Fisheries and Oceans Canada to make the Cabot Strait slowdown mandatory and season-long.
Entanglements are also threatening these endangered whales.A jungle of roughly one million fishing lines sprawls across the whales' migration (迁移) route and feeding areas in Canada and the United States. These ropes have been seen wrapped around North Atlantic right whales' mouths, fins, tails and bodies or cut into the whales' flesh. These injuries can lead to life-threatening infections (感染),as well as prevent them from feeding properly, which leads to starvation and death.
These whales can't protect themselves, but you can help.

About 35,000 African elephants are killed every year. That's one dead elephant every 15 minutes! And if that continues, they'll be extinct in less than a decade. There are a few societies working to prevent this, and now some of them are getting some help from Big Tech.
Three such groups have teamed up with Intel to stop poachers (偷猎者).They're doing this by using AI-based cameras in national parks across the globe. The TrailGuard AI camera makes use of Intel's Movidius Myriad 2 VPU processors. “By pairing AI technology with human decision-makers,we can solve some of our greatest challenges,” says Anna Bethke, head of AI for Social Good at Intel.“With TrailGuard AI,Intel's Movidius technology enables the camera to take pictures of suspected poachers and warns park rangers (巡护员) in almost real time, who will then decide the most appropriate response.”
Intel claims its system can show the exact position of people and cars among the wildlife with a high degree of accuracy. The first generation of the system involved cameras that were triggered (触发) by movement tracking which would then send photos to the rangers on duty.Inauspiciously, that just sent them a lot of photos they had to review when anything moved in a camera's field of view. However,by adding AI on top of it,the cameras can act as a first-line check and work much better without wasting time.
The system is also designed to run at low power, allowing it to function in the wild for up to a year and a half on a single charge.“Edge computing technology has the power to revolutionize the way we understand and protect our wildlife,” said Dr.Fabien Laurier, vice president of National Geographic Labs.“It is really helpful for us to accelerate conservation and work toward our dream of achieving a planet in balance.”
