Introduction to English Dictionaries
Oxford English Dictionary (OED)
First published in 1884, edited by James Murray and a team of scholars. It’s well-known for its historical depth, tracing word origins and usage across centuries with 600,000+ entries. Regarded as the “gold standard” of English dictionaries, though its sheer size makes it less portable. The print version costs around $395, while the 12-month online subscription is $29.95, available via Oxford University Press’s official website or major book retailers like Amazon.
Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (CALD)
Launched in 1995 by Cambridge University Press, tailored for non-native speakers. It features simple explanations, 14,000+ example sentences, and collocation guides. Widely acclaimed for supporting language learning, with regular updates to reflect modern English. The print edition is about $34.99, and the app subscription is $14.99 / year, accessible via Cambridge’s official store or Apple Books.
Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary
Founded on Noah Webster’s 1828 “American Dictionary”, the first collegiate edition emerged in 1898. It prioritizes American English, offering clear definitions, current usage examples, and pronunciation guides. A staple in US classrooms and offices, praised for accessibility. Priced at approximately $24.99 (print) and $19.99 (e-book), it can be purchased from Merriam-Webster’s site, Barnes & Noble, or digital platforms like Kindle.
Collins English Dictionary
First released in 1979, compiled by Collins lexicographers. It stands out for its “word banks” and real-world usage focus, drawing on a 4.5-billion-word corpus. Praised for relevance to everyday English, though some critics note less historical detail than the OED. It retails (零售) for around $27.99 (print) and $17.99 (digital), available on Collins’ website, Walmart, or Google Play Books.

When I was in graduate school, I admired a student named Peter. Smart, articulate and charming, Peter was the type of person I wanted to be like. One day in the library — his final quarter before graduation — I congratulated him. His reply shocked me: “I am excited, but I didn’t build my network well, so no jobs are lined up yet.”
His words terrified me. If someone as impressive as Peter had no job prospects, what would happen to me? As the son of two immigrants, education was my ticket to success. I could not afford to waste this opportunity. I found myself feeling anxious and fearful. I had to secure my career — finishing school without a job was too risky.
Then I recalled the repeated advice: “Network and build relationships. It’s who you know, not what you know.” They were right. Education wasn’t the highway to opportunity, just an on-ramp The real highway was social capital — your network and the people who know you.
Determined, I spent all my free time building relationships with potential employers. It worked — internships and jobs opened up — but it felt wrong. I treated people as transactions (交易), only asking, “What can I get from them?” Networking became a “necessary evil”.
One day, I ran into a childhood friend at a café. He spent the whole time urging me to join his multi-level marketing scheme, promising I’d make enough money to quit working and support my parents — just by getting people to buy products they already needed.
That moment changed everything. I realized: if networking feels unpleasant, you’re doing it wrong. Relationships are like a garden — tend them well, and they’ll grow and bear more fruit than you can consume. Instead of taking, invest in others, serve them, and connect them. Giving social capital doesn’t deplete (耗尽) it — it multiplies it.
Becoming a generous relational investor is a lifestyle. So, what’s your approach? Are you a greedy consumer or a generous investor? It’s never too late to ask: “What can I give?” instead of “What can I get?”
4. What does the underlined phrase “lined up” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Arranged. B. Canceled. C. Changed. D. Forgotten.
5. What can be known about the author?
A. His parents were well-educated. B. He valued education highly.
C. He grew up in a wealthy family. D. His parents worked in marketing.
6. How did the author change in thinking about networking?
A. From believing “education is key” to “social capital is key”.
B. From viewing networking as “necessary” to “unnecessary”.
C. From treating others as “transactional partners” to “relational investees”.
D. From focusing on “meeting employers” to “helping friends”.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. Education: A path to Success B. Networking: Give Rather Than Take
C. Job-Hunting: A Goal for Graduates D. Friendship: A Source of Suggestions
A 5. B 6. C 7. B
根据第一段“His reply shocked me: “I am excited, but I didn’t build my network well, so no jobs are lined up yet.”(他的回答让我震惊:“我很兴奋,但我没有很好地建立人脉,所以还没有工作lined up。”)”以及第二段“If someone as impressive as Peter had no job prospects, what would happen to me? (如果像彼得这样令人印象深刻的人都没有工作前景,我会怎么样?)”可知,彼得因为没有很好地建立人脉,所以还没有安排好工作,故lined up意为“安排”,与arranged意义相近。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“As the son of two immigrants, education was my ticket to success. I could not afford to waste this opportunity. (作为两个移民的儿子,教育是我成功的门票。我不能浪费这个机会。)”可知,作者高度重视教育。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“I treated people as transactions (交易), only asking, “What can I get from them?” Networking became a “necessary evil”. (我将人们视为交易,只问:“我能从他们那里得到什么?”人际交往成了“必要的恶”。)”以及第六段“Instead of taking, invest in others, serve them, and connect them. Giving social capital doesn’t deplete (耗尽) it — it multiplies it. (与其索取,不如投资他人,服务他人,连接他人。给予社会资本不会耗尽它——它会成倍增加。)”可知,作者从把人际关系当作交易,转变为将其视为可以投资的关系。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。根据全文内容,结合最后一段“It’s never too late to ask: “What can I give?” instead of “What can I get?”(问“我能给予什么?”而不是“我能得到什么?”永远都不晚。)”可知,文章主要讲述了作者对于人际交往观念的转变,从索取变为给予。因此“人际交往:给予而非索取”最适合作为本文标题。
C
For years, the US has been called a melting pot — a place where different individuals are mixed together. And the country’s food preferences show that.
Many Americans learn about and enjoy different cultures through food. One study shows Mexican food is the most popular ethnic (有民族特色的) food in the largest number of states. It is especially popular on the US West Coast. But Chinese food is the top ethnic food nationwide.
“Both cuisines (烹饪风格) have a rich history connected to the large immigrant (移民的) Chinese and Mexican populations in the US,” notes Georgie Mihaila. She is with a food-based blog called Chef’s Pencil. The website is the idea of professional chefs, who prepare meals for top restaurants. It uses information from search engine to identify the most popular ethnic food in the country.
Mihaila said as generations of immigrants settled in the US, they made their food more readily available and less costly. Thai, Korean, Vietnamese and Japanese restaurants are also gaining fans across the country. Their popularity is no accident, either. In 2002, for example, Thailand’s government started training chefs and sending them out to share their cuisine with the world. The aim of the “Global Thai” culinary diplomacy (外交) programme was to increase the number of Thai restaurants worldwide.
Millennials (千禧一代) are leading the push for more diverse food experiences. Millennials are now the nation’s largest age group. They are generally between the ages of 26 and 40. And they are likely to share their eating experiences on social media. “It’s not just about the food, but also the atmosphere, the culture, experiencing something fun and memorable,” Mihaila said. In general, she added, Americans are making more adventurous food choices.
Often, Chinese, Mexican and other ethnic food restaurants are less pricey than other eateries. But that is also changing. Mihaila said, “You have restaurants opening up across the country that are serving ethnic foods like Mexican, Thai or Indian, that are positioned to serve the upper end of the market.” Such businesses, she added, have seen great success.
8. What foreign food is the favourite in the most US states?
A. Chinese food. B. Thai food. C. Mexican food. D. Japanese food.
9. Why did Thailand start its culinary programme in 2002?
A. To train local chefs for top restaurants. B. To open more Thai restaurants globally.
C. To compete with Chinese cuisine. D. To reduce food prices in Thailand.
10. What can we learn about Millennials from the text?
A. They dislike traditional American food.
B. They prefer costly dining experiences.
C. They drive the demand for various food choices.
D. They seldom share food online.
11. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To advise readers to try foreign food.
B. To compare Chinese and Mexican food in America.
C. To show the importance of culinary diplomacy.
D. To introduce the popularity of diverse ethnic foods in the US.
C 9. B 10. C 11. D
根据第二段中“One study shows Mexican food is the most popular ethnic (有民族特色的) food in the largest number of states. (一项研究显示,墨西哥美食在最多的州里是最受欢迎的民族特色美食。)”可知,在最多州最受喜爱的外国食物是墨西哥菜。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“The aim of the “Global Thai” culinary diplomacy (外交) programme was to increase the number of Thai restaurants worldwide. (“全球泰国”美食外交项目的目的是在全球增加泰国餐厅的数量。)”可知,泰国启动该项目是为了在全球开设更多泰式餐厅。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段中“Millennials (千禧一代) are leading the push for more diverse food experiences. (千禧一代正推动人们去体验更加多样化的美食。)”可知,千禧一代带动了人们对多样化美食选择的需求。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是根据第一段中“For years, the US has been called a melting pot — a place where different individuals are mixed together. And the country’s food preferences show that. (多年来,美国被称作大熔炉,一个不同的人融合在一起的地方,该国的饮食偏好就体现了这一点。)”可知,文章旨在介绍在美国多元民族美食的流行情况。

A new study has found ozone (臭氧) pollutants in Earth’s lower atmosphere increased across the Northern Hemisphere over the past 20 years.
Ozone is a form of oxygen. In Earth’s upper atmosphere, it acts as a barrier to block harmful radiation from the sun. But closer to Earth’s surface, ozone is a common pollutant. At ground level, high levels of ozone can harm people’s lungs and damage plants.
A European research programme collected the data. The programme equips commercial aircraft with instruments to measure atmospheric conditions during flight.
The researchers used ozone observations from 60,000 flights worldwide. They centred on five areas of the Northern Hemisphere — the northeastern US, Germany, India, Southeast Asia and Northeast China and Korea. The Northern Hemisphere was studied because it contains a large percentage of the human population affected by air quality. The researchers did, however, report lower ground-level ozone in some areas, including North America and Europe. But they said those results were canceled out by increases in ozone higher up in the atmosphere.
Audrey Gaudel, the lead writer of the study, said the data collected by international aircraft was valuable in creating a clear picture of ozone levels over the Northern Hemisphere over long periods.
To explore what was causing the changes, the scientists examined levels of nitrogen oxides They are considered to be atmospheric pollutants often resulting from human activities.
The researchers used the aircraft data to create models to estimate how nitrogen oxide releases affected atmospheric conditions. The team said it found some of the sharpest increases in areas where ozone levels were once the lowest. These included Malaysia and Indonesia, as well as other parts of Southeast Asia, and India. Those areas had very low ozone values between 1994 and 2004, but very high levels in recent years, between 2011 and 2016.
Next, Gaudel said her team plans to take a closer look at ozone levels in the tropics (热带). She thinks Africa will be one area to watch as a possible “hot spot” of increasing pollutive releases in coming years.
12. How is the text mainly developed?
A. By giving examples and arguing. B. By raising questions and solving them.
C. By following time order and space order. D. By presenting facts and research results.
13. What do we know about the ozone changes in some areas?
A. Europe’s low-level ozone loss was balanced out by its upper-air ozone rise.
B. Ozone rose both near-ground and higher in North America.
C. India and Malaysia had top ozone levels from 1994 to 2004.
D. All Northern Hemisphere nations saw steady ozone growth.
14. What is Gaudel’s attitude towards the data got by aircraft?
A. Doubtful. B. Objective. C. Critical. D. Favourable.
15. What can we infer about the team’s future research?
A. It will focus on ozone in the tropics. B. It will stop studying nitrogen oxides.
C. It will prove Africa has no air pollution. D. It will cover all countries in Northern Hemisphere.
D 13. A 14. D 15. A

An Amazing Plant — The Bamboo
Bamboo is a remarkable plant. It is often mistaken for a tree. ____16____ There are around 1,000 species of bamboo worldwide. They thrive (茁壮成长) in tropical and subtropical regions, from China to Brazil. Its slender yet tough stems and evergreen leaves make it distinctive in forests and gardens.
Bamboo’s growth speed is incredible. That surprises people most. Some species grow over one metre a day in Japan. The fastest ones even reach a record of one metre per hour. Unlike trees, bamboo does not take decades to mature. It can reach full height in just two months. ____17____
Bamboo has another outstanding feature: its regenerative ability. When its stems are cut down, new shoots grow back quickly from the roots. This means it can be harvested continuously. ____18____ It is environmentally friendly and cost-effective. Its stems are tough yet flexible. They are tougher than wood from many strong trees.
This plant is highly versatile ____19____ It is used to build houses, bridges and furniture. In some medical fields, it even makes tiny surgical needles for sewing nerves. A Frenchman once built a bamboo airplane. He named it “Flyboo” and flew it. Moreover, it is the sole food source for giant pandas. Pandas are China’s beloved endangered species.
____20____ It symbolizes sustainability. It offers a low-carbon alternative to steel and concrete. In the future, this ancient grass will play a more important role. It will be part of our green life. It shows nature’s wisdom in adaptation and utility.
A. It has countless uses.
B. There is no need to replant it.
C. Bamboo is more than just a plant.
D. People use bamboo to build houses.
E. But it actually belongs to the grass family.
F. This makes it one of the fastest-growing plants on Earth.
G. It is well-known that bamboo shoots are a panda’s staple diet.

此处用了with的复合结构,空处作宾语补足语,find“发现”和offshore oil and gas reserves逻辑上是被动关系,所以用过去分词found。
take charge of是固定短语,意为“负责”。

During a family trip to Sichuan, a woman named Li Ting and her family of four were trapped in a crowded tourist area. It was late afternoon, and they were tired and hungry after walking for hours in the warm weather. They searched for a long time but could not find a restaurant to eat, as most places were crowded with visitors and fully booked. Li Ting then walked to a nearby farmer’s house and offered 400 yuan for a simple home meal. To their great surprise, the farmer and his wife treated them with great kindness, cooking ten delicious dishes and sharing a bottle of wine with them.
When they returned to the hotel, Li Ting found a small note secretly put in her backpack. It said the money had been returned to her side pocket, and the meal was just a gift for new friendship. She was moved to tears at once. She and her husband agreed that they could not accept such kindness without doing anything in return.
The next morning, they went back to the farmer’s home and insisted on giving the money. The farmer refused again and again, but the couple kept asking politely. Finally he had to accept it but gave them a basket of fresh eggs and vegetables in return. On the way back, Li Ting learned that the couple had three young children and lived a simple life by growing crops and selling local products. She decided to help them from then on.
A month later, she sent warm winter clothes and useful school supplies to the family anonymously (匿名地). The two families kept in touch and exchanged gifts regularly. When they heard the farmer’s old house leaked badly on rainy days, they sent 5,000 yuan, telling a white lie that it was a poverty-relief fund from the company. They were worried that the family would not accept the money if they told the truth.

The next year, Li Ting and her family visited Sichuan again. They stayed at the farmer’s house. They were happy to see the newly painted rooms and the firm repaired roof. The three children ran out happily, and the youngest one called her “Aunt” softly. The farmer told them he had started a small farmhouse business and his life had improved a lot. Before leaving, the farmer’s wife gave Li Ting a jar of homemade honey and several beautiful bamboo fans. These fans are light and special products of Sichuan.
As the car drove away slowly, the whole family stood at the road. They waved their hands until they could no longer be seen. Li Ting looked back again and again, with a warm feeling in her heart. After arriving home, Li Ting placed the yellowed note and the delicate bamboo fans in her drawer. She would take them out and look at them carefully, recalling the warm days in the mountain village and the sincere friendship between the two families. This true friendship has become the most beautiful memory in her life.

A. Being first published before 1900. B. Having over 600,000 entries.

注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
The next year, Li Ting and her family visited Sichuan again.
