B A few months after my son was born, I read Rachel Carson’s essay The Sense of Wonder, which offered suggestions for building connections between children and nature, something I hoped to do with my son. Carson never had any children of her own, but in The Sense of Wonder, she shared memories of time spent with her young nephew: a nighttime visit to the ocean, a rainy walk in the woods, and listening to soft whispers of wind and insects. She designed the work to be a kind of instruction manual(手册)for parents, assuring them that even if they didn’t have professional wildlife knowledge, they could work to help their kid develop a sense of awe for nature. According to Carson, a child’s world is fresh, new and beautiful, full of wonder and excitement. Sadly, for most people, the true instinct(本能)for what is beautiful and awe-inspiring fades and may even disappear before adulthood. Carson suggests, “Exploring nature with your child is largely a matter of becoming receptive to what lies all around you. It is learning to use your eyes, ears, and fingertips, opening up the disused channels of sensory impression.” I wanted my little baby to experience that fresh wonder. One quiet night, I carried my baby outdoors far from city lights. The sight of the stars washed across our faces like soft light. We looked quietly into the night sky. I waited until my son saw the stars, really saw them. Something seemed to possess him — no words, no gestures, only the raw wonder of seeing. Finally, he lifted his small arm and pointed to the sky, turning his amazed face to mine, as if to say, “Have you seen this, Mama?” My son was young, barely a year old, but I hoped somehow, if and when I was finally lost to him, he might still treasure the gift from his mama and be able to feel his connection with nature in the soft brown of the garden’s soil and in the stars in the open night sky I showed him when he was just a baby. 24. What is the main purpose of Carson’s essay? A. To provide practical guidance. B. To share parenting hardships. C. To restore children’s lost instincts. D. To raise environmental awareness. 25. What does the star-watching experience mainly illustrate? A. Silent nights inspire lasting awe. B. Nature fuels kids’ inborn wonder. C. Shared moments build family ties. D. Watching stars generates curiosity. 26. What did the author envision for her son in the last paragraph? A. Possessing gardening skills. B. Remaining bonded to nature. C. Returning to nature when lost. D. Treasuring childhood memories. 27. What is the most suitable title for the text? A. A Mother’s Gift B. A Book of Wonder C. Adventures in the Wild D. Carson’s Advice for Parents C Feeling thirsty? Drawing clean water directly from the air is possible, as even extremely dry regions contain some moisture(水汽). Over the past few years, researchers have created sponge-like(海绵状的)materials that make “atmospheric water harvesting”(AWH)possible by absorbing moisture. However, recovering the trapped water usually involves heat and a long wait. Most current systems rely on sunlight to warm these materials. This slow step can take many hours or even stretch into days. To break this bottleneck, MIT engineers Ikra Shuvo and Svetlana Boriskina identified a much faster method. Instead of heating the water-absorbing materials to release water, they use high-frequency ultrasonic(超声波的)vibrations to shake the moisture loose. These sound waves are precisely tuned to break the weak bonds holding water molecules(分子)in place. This targeted disturbance creates enough force to release the water, shaking it out in small drops. The new approach elegantly bypasses the materials’ unyielding nature. “Any material that is very good at absorbing water doesn’t want to part with it,” explains Boriskina. “So you normally need to put a lot of energy into pulling water out.” With ultrasound, this process is completely transformed. Lab tests show this method is about 45 times more efficient than traditional heating, freeing the trapped water in mere minutes. This breakthrough overturns the assumption that AWH systems must absorb moisture overnight and depend on passive sunlight during the day. Powered by a small solar cell, which supplies electricity and also acts as a sensor to detect when the material is wet, the system activates automatically whenever enough water has gathered, allowing the setup to cycle day and night. The project’s ultimate purpose goes far beyond laboratory efficiency. Boriskina notes it could provide a reliable source of drinking water for remote communities lacking freshwater. As global water crises worsen, this innovation offers a ray of hope, which might be a life-saving solution in the thinnest of air. 28. What does “this bottleneck” mentioned in Paragraph 2 refer to? A. The lack of water in dry regions. B. The huge cost of current devices. C. The slow process of releasing water. D. The poor performance of the materials. 29. How do the ultrasound waves release water from the materials? A. By heating the watery materials. B. By overcoming the trapping force. C. By breaking water into small drops. D. By changing the materials’ property. 30. What activates the new device automatically? A. An electronic sensor. B. A water cycling setup. C. Insufficient water absorption. D. Continuous sunlight exposure. 31. What does Boriskina highlight regarding the project in the last paragraph? A. Its further research. B. Its practical potential. C. Its current limitations. D. Its technical improvements. D Partying the night before a big exam. Preparing at the last minute for a work presentation. Running a 5K in a heavy Halloween costume. All are examples of what psychologists call “self-handicapping” — creating obstacles to success to protect one’s reputation. “Much previous research has explained it as a matter of personality,” said Yang Xiang, a psychology researcher. Xiang and her co-authors have designed a mathematical model of how the phenomenon works socially. Their theory suggests people often judge someone’s competence from only one or two performances. So, if a person expects to be judged, creating an obstacle can give failure another explanation. In this way, self-handicapping is an attempt to game those judgments. “You’re doing this because it works,” Xiang said. To test the theory, the researchers created a quiz-show experiment in which participants could choose how their performance would be judged. 20 questions were provided, and 8 correct answers meant a pass. Some chose to be judged on all 20 questions, while others on a random subset of 10. Choosing the random subset created uncertainty and offered a possible excuse for failure, making it a form of self-handicapping. As the model confirmed, the behavior occurred most frequently among those least likely to fail — or to succeed. When self-handicappers succeeded, judges rated them especially highly. The behavior also softened judgments of those who failed. However, this protection weakened when the strategy was seen through, suggesting it worked best when judges were less aware of it. Previous studies show self-handicapping can weaken educational goals. It has been linked with lower self-esteem(自尊), lower motivation, and declining student performance. The new research suggests that a shift in educators’ focus may help. When students are driven by the pressure to look smart, they remain highly likely to self-handicap. Instead, focusing on students’ progress over the rankings can further reduce their need to create excuses. “By understanding the psychology behind this behavior,” Xiang noted, “we hope this research reveals ways to prevent harmful academic self-handicapping.” 32. What may be the intention behind the behaviors in Paragraph 1? A. To draw attention from others. B. To express unique personalities. C. To relieve anxiety before an event. D. To make excuses for possible failure. 33. What does the underlined word “game” in Paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Test. B. Follow. C. Influence. D. Record. 34. What can be concluded from the experiment? A. Success depends on appropriate strategies. B. Self-handicapping mainly benefits failures. C. Self-handicapping can protect one’s image. D. Average players are likeliest to self-handicap. 35. What do the researchers suggest educators do? A. Adopt higher standards. B. Value individual growth. C. Focus on measurable results. D. Stress success in tough tasks. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 We often stop noticing things we’ve grown used to, as a side effect of our brains protecting us from sensory overload. Many of us have had the experience of going through daily information without truly registering familiar content. Our minds move past these moments not because we lack care, but because of an evolutionarily useful trait(特性)called habituation. 36 This reduced sensitivity serves an important purpose. Without this mental shortcut, we would be constantly disturbed by endless background signals and eventually drowned by too many things around us. For instance, while working in a cafe, we may fail to notice background music or steady lighting until we pay attention to them on purpose. Our brains quietly tune out stable signals to free up resources. 37 The brains of unborn babies can already habituate to repeated light and sound stimuli(刺激), learning to ignore familiar signals and prioritize new changes. Habituation brings many hidden benefits. It helps people adapt to continuous sadness or long-term discomfort, making tough situations more bearable. 38 When the excitement of a new job fades, this declining satisfaction pushes people to seek growth and explore new possibilities. 39 Habituation may make us ignore warning signs like ongoing pain, delaying medical treatment. People may gradually get used to inappropriate or harmful behavior, accepting things that should never be tolerated. Fortunately, there are practical ways to reverse(逆转)habituation and regain sensitivity. 40 Changing daily routes, rearranging furniture or alternating sitting positions can bring fresh stimulation. These tiny adjustments keep our brains out of fixed patterns and help us stay observant. A. It also drives personal progress. B. Small changes in daily life can refresh our senses. C. It makes repeated experiences less noticeable over time. D. So overcoming negative habituation is especially urgent. E. Without habituation, we would lose our ability to focus. F. Remarkably, this adaptive ability exists even before birth. G. This automatic mechanism can also hold us back, however. 第三部分 语言运用(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) I was 18 and freshly arrived in the city, feeling both excited and lost. Rarely does contemporary tourism attach so much importance to 57 (spirit)peace rather than mere visual enjoyment. Behind this booming trend 58 (lie)what many scholars regard as a notable social transformation, reshaping people’s ways of travelling. Many cultural sites, once 59 (ignore)and left unnoticed, now serve as mental shelters for young people constantly struggling with anxiety. There exists a widespread belief that literary works can embed soul into ordinary landscapes. The Temple of Earth in Beijing, 60 (close)linked to Shi Tiesheng’s writings, has become a popular visiting spot. Visitors recreate scenes described in some of his 61 (essay), quietly experiencing the peaceful mindset he gained through countless hardships. Thanks to literary power, ordinary landscapes are viewed in 62 completely different light nowadays. This cross-border cultural fascination stretches beyond China. It was about a superheroine who fought the enemies of the Earth. When the bell rang, the friends quickly greeted the postman and grabbed the envelope from his hand. Mia opened it and surprisingly found a letter from the publisher. She read, “Dear readers, we’re sorry to inform you that the comic series, Galatia Woman, has been discontinued.” Both of them looked up in horror. Their favourite comic, which they had been reading since they were twelve, had been cancelled! Losing the comic felt like losing a part of themselves. They couldn’t sit around and do nothing. The next morning, they found the writer’s address printed inside the comic and decided to find the writer, Lekha. When they knocked at the door, a girl slightly older than them opened it. After introducing themselves, the girls were astonished to find it was Lekha herself. Still in astonishment, the girls couldn’t wait to ask Lekha what would happen next in the story. Lekha let out a deep sigh and explained she could not tell them because she was completely stuck. Upon hearing this, the girls’ hearts sank with disappointment. Even so, they still voiced the question that had been weighing on their minds: Why didn’t Galatia seek help from her knights(骑士)to defeat the enemies? Lekha insisted firmly that the heroine herself was powerful enough and didn’t need any help. “But I can’t even imagine stepping out of my house without my friends. Everyone needs a friend or someone to rely on,” Prisha spoke up. “I… never had any friends. That’s why I wanted Galatia to fight alone and never need help,” Lekha said weakly. Mia seemed to realize something. She spoke softly, “Perhaps we could become your friends and help you continue the story.” Hearing this, Lekha fell silent and then nodded slowly. 注意: (1)续写词数应为150个左右; (2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Over the next few hours, the kids worked out various storylines.
