When my mother turned ninety,I knew I needed to find a senior fitness
class. Not for her-for me.I could see I had it in my genes to live another
thirty years, and I wanted to stay in good enough shape to enjoy it.
I enjoyed walking in local parks, and most days I walked a mile around
the neighbourhood with my husband. But in my heart,I knew I wasn't as
fit as when I was running after little kids and working out at the local gym.
I called the senior center.Diana answered the phone with enthusiasm.
“Come to check us out!”she invited.“We start at 10a.m.”
The next morning,I pulled into the parking lot and took a deep
breath.Part of me was afraid the class would be too easy and not do me any
good. The other part was afraid it would be too hard, and I wouldn't be
able to keep up.I grabbed my towel and headed for the all-purpose room.
Inside,twenty-five folding chairs were arranged in a circle around the sides
of the room.People chatted in small groups.I laid my sweatshirt over the
back of an empty chair.A blond woman in exercise shorts and a bright T-
shirt greeted me.
Then the music started.Instantly,I felt at home. The moves were
familiar from the aerobic(有氧健身的)dance classes I loved in the 1980s.I
recognized some of the songs from my high-school days;others were hits
before I was born.
The hour-long workout included aerobics,hand-and-ankle-weight
routines,sit-ups,balance exercises,and stretches.The exercise burned off
stress and woke up muscles I didn't use in my daily walks.I was hooked.
My classmates ranged from their late fifties to early nineties. Most
gave the exercises their own interpretation, doing as much or as little as
they were able.Happily,no one was keeping score.
Diana gathered us into a circle."Today is Pat's birthday,"she
announced. She launched into "Happy Birthday",and we all joined it.It
reminded me of birthday celebrations when my sons were in preschool-
only we didn't ask Pat to hold up fingers indicating how old she was.

I soon learned that physical wellbeing wasn't the only focus of the
class.
I'm in better shape now than when I started but the unexpected gift of
joining senior aerobics was more than that.

Fiona Famous was a very popular girl at school. She got on well with
everyone. From an early age,she had made an effort to be kind and friendly
to everyone. She invited the whole class to her birthday party and from time
to time she would give presents to everybody. She was such a busy girl that
she hardly got a chance to spend time with individual friends. However, she
felt very lucky;no other girl had so many friends.
But everything changed on National Friendship Day.On that day,at
school, everyone was having a great time, drawing, painting and giving
gifts.Everyone had to make three presents to give to their three best
friends.Fiona enjoyed the task of choosing three from all her friends.
However, when all the presents had been made and shared,Fiona was

the only one who had not received a present! She felt terrible and spent
hours crying. How could it be possible? So much effort to make so many
friends and in the end no one saw her as their best friend.Everyone came
and tried to calm her for a while. But each one only stayed for a while
before leaving. This was what Fiona had done so many times to others.
When she got home,Fiona asked her mother where she could find true
friends.
“My dear,”answered her mother,“you cannot buy friends with a
smile or a few good words. If you really want true friends, you will have to
give them real time and affection. For a true friend you must always be
available in good times and bad ones.
"But I want to be everybody's friend!I need to share my time among
everyone!”Fiona protested(声明).
“My dear,”said her mother,“you can't be a close friend to everybody..
There isn't enough time to be available for everyone,so it's only possible to
have a few true friends. The others will be playmates, but they won't be
close friends.”

Hearing this,Fiona realized what the problem is.
That night in bed,Fiona thought about what she could do to get true
friends.
Knock-knock-knock."Hello?"I called timidly through my cousin
Anita's bedroom door.No answer. There's no way she forgot I was moving
in today,right?I thought.“Anita?It'sme,Norah!”I called again.
I had only met my cousin once a couple of years ago when Anita and
Aunt Sonam had flown to California to visit.Mom had hoped Anita and I
would be friends. But all Anita wanted to talk about was soccer, which was
practically a foreign language to me.Secretly,I had felt relieved when the
visit was over.
Now,I was standing in my aunt's tiny apartment in New York City,
and there was still no answer from Anita.I knocked again,a little louder
this time. Finally,Anita opened the door. She apologized, saying she had
been listening to music. But instead of inviting me in,Anita frowned at my
massive suitcase.
Behind her,I could see a blue beanbag chair crowded next to a bunk
bed(上下铺).In my old room in California,I'd had a double bed all to
myself, and my original artwork had covered all the walls.Anita's walls,
on the other hand, were covered with posters of the U.S.women's soccer
team.I didn't see any free space to hang anything else.
"C-can I come in?"I asked,blushing.Anita nodded,but she barely
moved.I had no choice but to squeeze by her into the room.I put my stuff
against the wall and Anita started bouncing the soccer ball from her foot to
her knee and back again.Suddenly, her foot kicked the ball at an odd
angle,and it accidentally flew toward me.“Whoops!”Anita called..“Think
fast!”
But I was still taking in the surroundings,so the ball caught me off
guard and bounced off my shoulder.Forcing a smile,I pretended it didn't
bother me.Unsure of what to do,I took out my sketchbook(素描本)and
colored pencils and sat down.Just holding my sketchbook made me feel
more at ease.I started sketching aimlessly while Anita went back to bounce
her ball.
Suddenly,it dawned on me that I could draw Anita in action.
Anita studied the drawing carefully.

My daughter always loved small toys. She carried a little purse with
them in it.When my daughter was about three years old,the movie Bambi
was re-released.It became her favourite movie. Then her favourite toys
became all the Bambi characters:Thumper,the rabbit;the wise,old owl;
and,most especially,Bambi,the fawn(小鹿).
One day,when I got home from work,a tragedy()had happened
to Bambi. He had lost two of his four legs to our dog,who had picked up
the toy and chewed the legs to bits.I tried to make all the legs the same size
because my daughter's worry was that Bambi couldn't walk now. So,I
“operated'”on Bambi and bandaged(用绷带包扎)his legs so they would
"heal".As a nurse, that was the only thing I could think of to make her feel
better about her constant companion. My daughter was very disappointed

that I couldn't make Bambi all better because that is what mums do,
especially mums who are nurses.
The next day,I went to work, and the mother of one of the kids asked
me how I had enjoyed my time off.She had a child who was seriously ill.
She listened as I told her about the Bambi tragedy and smiled. She said her
girls were very attached to a few things, and she understood my daughter's
heartbreak. She told me that one of her daughters had loved a stuffed
animal that fell apart, and someone had made her a new one just like the old
one.It was lying on the bed next to the tiny girl who was my patient.I had
observed how she loved her stuffed animal, and in fact we made sure her
animal had an oxygen mask just like hers.

One possible version:
I soon learned that physical wellbeing wasn't the only focus of the class.During water breaks, people
chatted about the Seattle Seahawks and Mariners or shared family news.Carl,a fellow birdwatcher, told me
about nearby bird sightings.Whenever people were absent,we asked around. Were they busy?Or were they in
the hospital? We signed get-well cards for those who were ill and sympathy cards for those who'd lost loved
ones.I often ran into classmates out buying things at the grocery store.
I'm in better shape now than when I started but the unexpected gift of joining senior aerobics was more than
that.Through aerobics class,I gained new friendships and felt more connected to my local community.Studies
show that social connections are as vital to our good health as physical exercise.Luckily,my senior fitness class
gives me both.My mother is ninety-three now and just won a gold medal in the javelin (throw at the
National Senior Games. If I'm going to keep up with her,I may need to hire a personal trainer.

One possible version:
Hearing this,Fiona realized what the problem is.She was a good companion and playmate, but she had not
been a true friend to anyone. She had tried not to argue with anyone;she had tried to pay attention to everyone.
But now she had found out that was not enough to create true friendship. To be close friends, you need to spend
enough time with others. You need to understand what they are going through and what they are thinking.Fiona
decided to change her ways so that she could finally have some true friends.
That night in bed,Fiona thought about what she could do to get true friends. She thought about her
mother. Her mother was always willing to help her.She put up with all of Fiona's dislikes and problems. She
always forgave her and she loved her a great deal. That was what really makes friends! To be there,to
understand,to forgive and to support.Fiona smiled from ear to ear, realizing she already had the best friend
anyone could ever want.
C
Suddenly,it dawned on me that I could draw Anita in action.Quickly turning to a blank page,I broadly
outlined the shape of my cousin bouncing the soccer ball.My spirits rose with each new line I drew.It was true
that I didn't enjoy playing sports, but I was really enjoying the challenge of trying to sketch my cousin in action!
Although it was my first attempt at something like this,I was pleased with the way I'd captured the energy of
Anita's movements. As I was examining my drawing,I didn't notice the soccer ball was no longer bouncing.I
glanced up to see Anita curiously eyeing my drawing.Nervously,I handed the sketchbook to her.
Anita studied the drawing carefully.I resisted the urge to grab the sketchbook and hide. She must think it
was totally weird. However,Anita said it was awesome and asked if she could have it.Before I could respond,
she had already ripped the drawing out of the sketchbook. Then Anita rummaged through a drawer for a tape,
saying that she wasn't really into art,but thought the drawing should definitely be on display in "our room".
After taping the drawing over one of her posters,Anita said a few changes needed to be made around the room if
I was moving in.With a broad smile,I picked up Anita's soccer ball and tossed it toward my new roommate.
“Think fast!”

One possible version:
Her mum told me,"I think I have one of those Bambi toys at home.""My girls don't play with them any
more. When my husband comes in and I go home,I will look for it,"she continued.I thought that would be the
last thing on her mind. So,I forgot about Bambi given the circumstances that mother was facing.I never
expected her to remember to look for it.I was off work for a while after that, and Bambi became a distant
memory for me.
When I returned to work,a package was waiting for me.Inside was a perfect, unbandaged Bambi and a note
from the mum of my patient, the much-loved little girl with the oxygen mask.Inside the package, the note said,
"Thank you for caring for my daughter.I found Bambi and a few more of these characters that I thought your
daughter would enjoy. My daughter will be happy to know her toys go to a caring and lovely family."I couldn't
stop the tears after I read the note. How fortunate I was to have known this family and their kindness.
