Google chief Sundar Pichai announced at a recent press conference that
his company had developed a new Al-powered chatbot tool.A chatbot is a
computer programme designed to interact with humans in a conversational
way.The search engine company said it plans to use the new chatbot
service,called "Bard",to provide a better online search experience.Google
currently holds more than 80 percent of the worldwide Internet search
market.
Bard is one of several recently launched tools that demonstrate major
AI development progress in recent years. The tools are built by feeding
huge amounts of data into machine learning computer systems. The data
trains the AI systems to develop complex skills and produce human-like
results.
A free writing tool called ChatGPT was launched by a company called
OpenAI late last year. The tool received widespread media attention for
being able to produce human-quality written documents very quickly.
Technology experts have said such systems have the possibility to greatly
change many different industries and professions.Microsoft recently
announced a new,multibillion-dollar investment in OpenAl.As part of its
partnership,Microsoft provides "supercomputing systems"to OpenAI to
support the development of new AI products.
One day after Google confirmed the development of its new Bard
chatbot,Microsoft announced plans to redesign its Bing search engine and
Edge web browser(浏览器),combining its ChatGPT technology with its
search engine Bing.
Technology experts say the two announcements are a clear sign that
Google and Microsoft are seeking to compete directly in the online search
market as well as other online areas. But Microsoft has a long way to go to
reach the level of Google's success. It is estimated that Bing held just nine
percent of the worldwide online search market in 2022.
Google says its tool is designed to explain complex subjects such as
outer space discoveries in terms simple enough for a child to understand.
The company also claims Bard will be able to perform other helpful jobs,
such as providing ideas for planning a party or giving meal suggestions
based on food available in the home.Google has been developing a system
called "Language Model for Dialogue Applications,or LaMDA,which will
be used to power Bard.

more than two decades'professional experience translating the heady into
the understandable. She writes from the practical angle of a business person
rather than as an academic, making for a guide which is highly accessible
and informative and which,by the close, will make you feel almost as smart
as Al.
As we soon come to learn from Al by Design,Al is already super-
smart and will become more capable, moving from the current generation of
"narrow-AI"to Artificial General Intelligence.From there,Campbell says,
will come Artificial Dominant Intelligence. This is why Campbell has set
out to raise awareness of AI and its future now-several decades before these
developments are expected to take place. She says it is essential that we
keep control of artificial intelligence,or risk being sidelined and perhaps
even worse.
Campbell's point is to wake up those responsible for Al-the
technology companies and world leaders-so they are on the same page as
all the experts currently developing it.She explains we are at a "tipping
point"in history and must act now to prevent an extinction-level event for
humanity. We need to consider how we want our future with AI to pan out.
Such structured thinking, followed by global regulation, will enable us to
achieve greatness rather than our downfall.
AI will affect us all,and if you only read one book on the subject, this
is it.
5.What does the phrase "In the wrong hands"in Paragraph 2 probably
mean?
A.If read by someone poorly educated.

Oceans are an appealing target for renewable energy generation.Waves
alone produce 32,000 terawatt-hours of natural energy per year-for
reference, the entire world uses around 23,000 terawatt-hours annually.
And there is also the power of currents and tides()energy.
The advantages of wave power are clear.Basically, wave energy does
not emit greenhouse gases when generated, like fossil fuels do.Turbines
(涡轮机)generate electricity through the power of waves, making them a
completely pollution-free,renewable energy source. And the amount of
power that is produced in a wave is huge-that energy then gets captured by
wave energy converters()to produce electricity. There is also a lot
of potential because many countries have access to an ocean that can help
power their electric grids. Also, waves are hardly interrupted and almost
always in motion. This makes electricity generation from wave energy a
more reliable energy source compared to wind power, since wind is not
constantly blowing.
But the disadvantages of wave energy are serious too.Building plants
or electrical wires directly on the beach might prove challenging because
they would be unsightly and can cause damage to marine life and the
surrounding ecosystems.Local fishing zones could be affected or the plants
could lead to more coastal corrosion().High costs is a problem too.
Wave power is an emerging energy technology in the early stages of
development, making working out costs difficult.Maintenance for these
plants is projected to be very expensive because they will be submerged in
constantly-moving saltwater.Because constant movement can lead to more
breaking, wave energy plants will most likely need regular(and costly)
maintenance.
Despite the challenges, there is a future of wave energy. For many
ocean-bordering countries, wave energy could be a great addition to the
renewable energy mix.The bottom line is that wave power has huge global
potential. However, the industry needs more funding and research to
finalize the technology involved so that countries and governments can begin
adding wave energy to their renewable energy collection.
9.What makes wave power more reliable compared to wind power?
A.Being huge in amount.
B.Being environmentally friendly.
C.Being almost always on the move.
D.Being accessible to many countries.
10.Why is it difficult to calculate the costs of wave power plants?
A.The plants are still in the initial stage.
B.The plants will ruin the neighbouring scenery.
C.It will cost much to maintain their functions.
D.The plants will cause damage to the ecosystems nearby.
11.Who is the text most probably intended for?
A.Students concerned about marine life.
B.Governments attracted by wave energy.
C.Teachers focusing on coastal ecosystems.
D.Scientists interested in renewable energy.
12.What is the author's attitude toward wave energy?
A.Critical.
B.Reserved.
C.Supportive.
D.Doubtful.

Exhausted by the rising cost of living in the United States and non-stop
advertisements, some young adults on TikTok are pushing back.
"When every moment of your life feels like you are being sold
something and the price of that item keeps going up,people will burn out
on spending money,"said Kara Perez,an influencer and financial educator.
Social media has long showcased picture-perfect homes, luxurious
closets and various beauty products. But a new trend, known as
"underconsumption core",is moving in the opposite direction-encouraging
more economical lifestyles and prioritizing quality over quantity. For
example, many people on social media proudly display their well-worn
shoes that have been with them since middle school, along with their
commitment to using the last drop of their makeup.Others opt for
repurposing old mason jars instead of buying new food storage containers.
For a long time, young people in the West have commonly made use of
"Buy Now,Pay Later"plans,which have intensified consumption.They
have developed a behavior of spending down to their last pound on a fashion
item.It is an addiction tied to the pressure "to show who we are through
possessions'”.However, years of inflation(通货膨胀)have forced many to
conclude that they cannot keep up with the spending habits of those on their
social media feeds.
高考总复习·周测阶梯卷·英语(六)P6一2
"The social media trend of'underconsumption'is a way for Gen Z to
make the most of their money and be environmentally friendly at the same
time,"said Ashley Ross, head of Bank of America.
Low-consumption brick-and-mortar(实体的)initiatives attract a
broader range of people across different profiles and generations.Anjali
Zielinski,42,joined a "Mending 101"workshop in Georgetown,DC,
hoping to acquire new skills. She brought her 7-year-old daughter,Mina,
along with her.In addition to providing an outlet for Mina's creativity, she
hopes the craft will teach her daughter the "value of our possessions and the
work that goes into them.
But some are still doubtful. It remains to be seen whether
“underconsumption core”is simply a mood or a lasting movement..“The
lifespan of this trend depends,in many ways,on how long the economy
continues to slow and incomes remains below price gains,"Brett House,an
economics professor at Columbia Business School, told CNBC.
13.What is the cause of some Americans'cutting back on spending?
A.The commercial activities.
B.Their social media feeds.
C.Their material satisfaction.
D.The economic downturn.
14.What is the philosophy of "underconsumption core"?
A.Spending money as you like.
B.Doing more with less.
C.Keeping up with the Joneses.
D.Buy Now,Pay Later.
15.How does the author tell us the trend's popularity among people?
A.By giving examples.
B.By making comparisons.
C.By listing numbers.
D.By citing research data.
16.What is Brett House's attitude to the "underconsumption core"trend?
A.Doubtful.
B.Reserved.
C.Objective.
D.Disapproving.
