When I was a teenage boy, I helped out at my parents’ furniture store in a charming New England town. The store was known for its wide range of products. One summer holiday, I was busy assisting customers to find what they needed. I always greeted them warmly at the entrance, and customers appreciated it as excellent service. I also assisted them to carry heavy things to their cars, but my parents strictly instructed me not to accept tips or anything else.
One day, an elderly lady visited the store. At first sight, I was drawn to her. She was neatly dressed and had a graceful presence, looking polite and friendly. She lived in a senior citizen apartment nearby and wanted to buy some chairs for her garden. After a short search, I found some chairs that met her needs. She bought two chairs and asked if I could help send them to her home just a stone’s throw away. Recognizing her old age, I agreed and carried the chairs to her building.
Upon arrival, she welcomed me warmly and showed me where to place the chairs. Before I could thank her for shopping in my parents’ store, she shocked me by placing a handful of candy in my hand. Then, to my amazement, she gave me an educational book. I politely rejected it, explaining that I couldn’t accept any presents. However, she put the book in my hand and said with a smile,” If your parents don’t want you to have this, just don’t tell them. Let me tell them instead.” We both laughed, and I thanked her sincerely. I decided to follow her advice, and she told my parents that she had given me a book as a reward for my hard work. With the book, I learned a lot and started my lifelong love for reading.
Reflecting on this experience, I often think of the elderly lady and hope she will live a joyful life surrounded by loved ones forever. Her generosity and humor have left a lasting impression on me.

C. Confused and worried. D. Grateful and surprised.

If you’re reading this in bed on your phone, you’re not alone. Many people use their phones before and after bedtime, especially young adults and teens. Still, you might want to stop soon. Using screens before bed or in bed is believed to disrupt sleep, although the exact reasons are not completely clear.
In a new study, researchers looked into this issue by using data from a large survey of 45, 202 university students in Norway. They found that using screens in bed is linked to a 59 percent higher chance of insomnia (失眠) and can result in 24 minutes less sleep each night.
“Sleep problems are very common among students and have serious effects on mental health, school performance, and overall well-being,” says Gunnhild Johnsen Hjetland, a clinical psychologist at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health. “Because so many people use screens in bed, we wanted to see how different screen activities affect sleep. We thought social media might be worse for sleep because it is interactive and can motivate emotions.”
However, the study found that using social media is no worse for sleep than other screen activities. The type of screen activity doesn’t matter as much as the total time spent using screens in bed. The researchers found no significant differences between social media and other screen activities. This suggests that using screens in general is the main cause of sleep problems, likely because it takes up time that could be used for resting.
“If you have trouble sleeping and think screen time might be a cause, try to reduce the use of screen in bed, and stop using screens at least 30 to 60 minutes before sleep,” says Hjetland. “If you use screens, consider turning off notifications (通知) to reduce disruptions during the night.”
28. How does the author begin the argument?
A. By listing different opinions. B. By referring to scientific data.
C. By mentioning a common act. D. By analyzing cause and effect.
29. Why did researchers initially guess social media could affect sleep more?
A. It included emotional inspiration. B. It contained violent content.
C. It was entirely used by students. D. It required frequent physical interaction.
30. Which is the practical advice Hjetland provides?
A. Reading e-books instead of social media. B. Avoiding using screen for a while before bed.
C. Increasing daytime physical activity. D. Stopping using screens after supper.
31. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Screen Time in Bed May Increase Sleeplessness
B. Good Sleep Is Key to Students’ Performance
C. Social Media Has the Worst Effect on Mental Health
D. Reading on Phones Is Common Among Teens and Young Adults
D
By the end of 2025, space exploration will witness significant milestones, blending government ambition and private innovation. America’s Artemis programme, delayed by technical issues with the Orion spacecraft’s heat shield and life-support systems, aims to send four astronauts on a ten-day lunar fly-by mission in late 2025. They will orbit the Moon in a figure-of-eight path before returning to Earth, though potential delays remain.
India’s Gagnayaan human-spaceflight programme may make its mark in 2025, as the country hopes to join the list of nations that have sent astronauts into space using domestically developed rockets. Despite earlier hold-ups, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) plans to launch astronauts on a mission to spend several days in low-Earth orbit.
Unmanned missions will also take centre stage. In May 2025, China’s Tianwen-2 probe will depart for the near-Earth asteroid 469219 Kamo’ oalewa, while the joint European-Japanese BepiColombo probe is set to reach Mercury in December. The European Space Agency (ESA) is preparing the first flight of Space Rider, a reusable robotic spaceplane designed to be launched by rocket and go back to Earth for reuse. Unlike the Space Shuttle, it serves as a robotic space laboratory, focusing on automated scientific missions.
Private companies will play a crucial role in 2025’s space activities. SpaceX, already a dominant force, will continue testing its massive Starship rocket and expanding its Starlink satellite constellation (卫星群). The company plans to launch the “direct-to-cell” service, enabling ordinary smartphones to connect directly with Starlink satellites and provide mobile coverage in underserved areas. Tech giant Amazon will advance its Kuiper satellite constellation, while Rocket Lab aims to launch its reusable Neutron rocket, building on the success of its smaller Electron rocket. Several privately funded lunar missions, including robotic landers and rovers, are scheduled to launch on a single SpaceX rocket in January. Notable is the Venus Life Finder (VLF), a $10m joint project by MIT, Rocket Lab, and philanthropists, set to search for life in Venus’ clouds with a simple robotic instrument — highlighting how private efforts now match government budgets in cosmic ambition.
32. What caused the delay in America’s Artemis programme?
A. Technical flaws in the spacecraft. B. Budget cuts for lunar missions.
C. Astronaut training complications. D. Launch site scheduling conflicts.
33. What makes the ESA’s Space Rider different from the Space Shuttle?
A. It is intended for crewed missions. B. It prioritizes reusable technology.
C. It functions as a robotic space lab. D. It requires no rocket launch.
34. What is the goal of SpaceX’s Starlink “direct-to-cell” service?
A. To provide high-speed internet in remote areas.
B. To enable communication in uncovered regions.
C. To station additional satellites in low-Earth orbit.
D. To compete with Amazon’s Kuiper constellation.
35. Why is the Venus Life Finder (VLF) mission significant?
A. It uses advanced telescopes to study Venus.
B. It represents the first private Mars exploration.
C. It owns a larger budget than government missions.
D. It demonstrates private capability in space research.

One of the primary goals of cognitive behavioral therapy (疗法) is finding effective ways to change your anxiety into productive action. The best possible one is under the care of an experienced mental health care provider. Still, if you are hoping to stop being paralyzed (麻痹) by anxiety and use this energy to fuel and improve your life, you can. ____36____
Set a goal. Goal-setting is one way to use your anxiety as fuel. Take notice of your anxious thoughts and worries. What are you most concerned about? ____37____ Instead of shaking in your boots, get down to developing a plan that allows you to overcome these fears.
Challenge yourself regularly to build resilience. Think of your resilience to anxiety as a muscle. ____38____ Rather than avoiding those situations that cause anxiety, gradually expose yourself to them more often. When you do this, you will find that, over time, they lose their power. For instance, if you hate public speaking, you might benefit from signing up for a local Toastmasters club. ____39____ Anxiety can feel like a live wire in your body. You can’t sit still or focus. Exercise is a great activity to make use of this spare energy. Exercise offers a host of benefits like fighting off illness and helping you manage weight. One of the benefits most helpful to you, however, is its ability to neutralize anxiety and improve your mood.
Perform reality testing. You don’t have to become a slave to your anxious thoughts, giving them permission to get you all worked up. ___40____ Reality testing involves assessing a situation for errors in thinking. To assess the reality of this situation, you want to ask what evidence is there that says this is true. Did your friends actually call you lame? Are they avoiding you?
A. What are your biggest fears?
B. Put them to the test instead.
C. Burn off nervous energy with physical activity.
D. How can you deal with getting fired if it does happen?

When the last customer left KFC, it was already 10:30 p.m.. Daniel, an 18-year-old college student, dragged himself home. He had been working at KFC for over a month that summer vacation.
Entering his room, Daniel found his younger brother Eric sitting on the edge of his bed with an uneasy expression on his face.
“Sorry, Daniel. I ... I did something wrong.” Eric sprang up and said nervously.
“What is it?”
“This afternoon I sneaked out for a ride on your motorcycle and accidentally hit our neighbor Mr. Green’s car. I was so scared and I ... I hurried home in panic.”
“Is the car seriously damaged?”
“The left headlight got broken.”
“It’s truly your fault and it’s really dangerous to ride a motorcycle at your age. Besides, it’s illegal.” Daniel raised his voice, obviously annoyed. Hearing this, Eric lowered his head and bit his lips hard.
“Anyway, it’s no use crying over spilt milk. I will deal with it tomorrow. Now you go to bed and have a good sleep.”
The next morning when Daniel got up, Eric was still sleeping soundly. Daniel was more determined about what he ought to do as an elder brother.
After breakfast, Daniel took out all the money he had earned and went out of the house with it. In the yard he saw his motorcycle, on whose side the scratches (划痕) were clearly visible. Daniel shook his head and sighed slightly. Then he squared his shoulders and quickened his pace to Mr. Green’s house. When he arrived, he was welcomed by Mrs.Green, who told him that Mr. Green had gone to the garage to have his car repaired.
“I have something important to tell him. Can I wait until he comes back?” Daniel requested eagerly.
“Of course. He should be home soon.” Mrs. Green invited Daniel in, served him a cup of coffee and began chatting with him.
After half an hour, the door opened and in came Mr. Green. Having said hello to each other, Mr. Green and Daniel both sat down on the sofa.
