五、阅读理解
When Beethoven was in his twenties, he started to lose his hearing. At first, he could still play the piano and compose music. But as the years passed, his hearing got worse and worse. By the time he was completely deaf, many people thought he would stop making music.
However, Beethoven did not give up. He used a special wooden stick to feel the vibrations of the piano keys. By holding one end of the stick between his teeth and the other end against the piano, he could "hear" the music through the bones in his head. In this way, he continued to compose some of his greatest works.
His Ninth Symphony was written when he was almost totally deaf. When it was first performed in public, Beethoven stood on the stage, unable to hear the applause. One of the singers gently turned him around so he could see the audience clapping wildly. Many people in the hall were in tears.
Beethoven once wrote, "Music is a higher revelation than all wisdom and philosophy." He believed that music could express feelings that words could never describe. Even though he could not hear the world, he gave the world some of the most powerful music ever created.

八、阅读表达。
Music has power. It can make us feel happy, calm, or even cry. But did you know that music can also help people who are sick?
In many hospitals around the world, music therapists work with patients. Music therapy is a way of using music to help people feel better. It can help patients who are in pain, who are feeling sad, or who have trouble speaking.
A music therapist might ask a patient to listen to a piece of music, sing a song, or play a simple instrument. For a patient who has had a stroke and cannot speak, singing familiar songs can help train the brain to form words again. For a child who is afraid of an operation, listening to soft music can make them feel safe and relaxed.
One music therapist, Sarah, works in a children's hospital. She says, "I see children who are in pain smile when we sing their favourite songs together. Music gives them a break from the fear and the pain. It doesn't cure the illness, but it makes the difficult time easier to bear."
Scientists have found that music can lower blood pressure, slow down the heartbeat, and reduce stress. It is a safe and enjoyable way to support medical treatment. As more hospitals start music therapy programmes, more patients will be able to feel the power of music.
