One night, Chen Hao was reading in bed when he heard a quiet sound: drip, drip, drip. At first, he thought rain was hitting the window. But the sky outside was clear. He followed the sound to the kitchen and found water falling slowly from the tap. A small bowl in the sink was nearly full.
Chen Hao turned the tap, but the water did not stop. He woke his father instead of trying to take the tap apart. His father found that the handle had not been turned all the way. After closing it firmly, they marked the water level in the bowl. In only twenty minutes, quite a lot of water had collected.
The next morning, Chen Hao used the water on the plants. His father checked the tap again and showed him how to listen for a leak after washing his hands.

(C)
Put a metal spoon and a wooden spoon on the same table for an hour. Touch them, and the metal one may feel colder. However, both spoons have been in the same room and are usually at almost the same temperature. The different feeling comes from how quickly each material moves heat.
Your hand is warmer than either spoon. When you touch metal, heat moves from your hand into the spoon quickly. Your skin loses heat fast, so the spoon feels cold. Wood moves heat much more slowly. Your hand stays warmer, and the wooden spoon does not feel as cold.
The same idea explains why a stone floor feels colder than a carpet in winter, even when both are in the same room. Stone takes heat from your feet faster. A carpet slows the movement of heat and feels warmer.
This does not mean that metal is always colder than wood. If both spoons are left in the sun, the metal spoon may feel hotter because it also takes in and moves heat quickly. What we feel depends not only on temperature, but also on how fast heat moves between our skin and an object.
36. Why may a metal spoon feel colder than a wooden one?
A. It is always at a lower temperature.
B. It stays outdoors longer.
C. Metal moves heat away from the hand faster.
D. Wood gives heat to the hand.
37. What happens when a warm hand touches metal?
A. Heat moves quickly from the hand into the metal.
B. The metal becomes colder than the room.
C. The hand takes heat from the metal.
D. No heat moves between them.
38. Why does the passage mention a stone floor and a carpet?
A. To show that carpets are easier to clean.
B. To compare rooms in summer and winter.
C. To explain why stone floors cost more.
D. To give another example of materials moving heat differently.
39. What can happen if both spoons are left in the sun?
A. The wooden spoon may melt.
B. The metal spoon may feel hotter.
C. Both spoons must feel cold.
D. Their temperatures cannot change.
40. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Why metal should not be used for spoons.
B. How to measure room temperature.
C. How heat movement affects how materials feel.
D. Why wooden objects stay warm forever.
【答案】36. C 37. A 38. D 39. B 40. C
【导语】这是一篇说明文,解释金属勺比木勺摸起来更凉的原因,并用地板和地毯进一步说明热量移动带来的触感差异。
【详解】36. C。细节理解题。根据第一段“The different feeling comes from how quickly each material moves heat”可知,金属勺感觉更凉是因为金属传递热量更快,故选C。
37. A。细节理解题。根据第二段“When you touch metal, heat moves from your hand into the spoon quickly”可知,温暖的手接触金属时,热量迅速从手传到勺子,故选A。
38. D。推理判断题。第三段指出石地板和地毯即使处于同一房间,触感也不同,这与金属勺和木勺的情况相同。作者举例是为了进一步说明材料传递热量的速度会影响触感,故选D。
39. B。细节理解题。根据第四段“If both spoons are left in the sun, the metal spoon may feel hotter”可知,两把勺子放在阳光下时,金属勺可能摸起来更热,故选B。
40. C。主旨大意题。全文通过勺子、地板和地毯等例子说明,物体的触感不仅取决于温度,还受到热量移动速度的影响,故选C。
(D)
During a walk in Chongqing, He Yu noticed old street names that sounded unusual. One narrow road was called Mishi Street, meaning “rice market street”. Another lane had a name connected with boats. There were no rice shops or boats there now, so He Yu wondered where the names came from.
At home, he asked his grandfather, who had lived in the area as a child. Grandfather explained that many street names came from the work people once did there. Mishi Street had been a place where rice was bought and sold. The boat lane led downhill toward an old river stop. Workers carried goods up the stone steps before roads were wide enough for trucks.
Grandfather also remembered names that came from shape or place. A turning street was named after its bend. A lane near a large tree used the tree as a guide. People did not need a map to understand such names because the market, river, steps and tree were part of daily life.
The area has changed. New buildings stand beside old houses, and buses now travel where people once walked with heavy baskets. Still, some names remain. They are short pieces of local memory, even when the old view has disappeared. He Yu began writing down the names and his grandfather’s stories. He knew the notes could not bring the past back, but they could help him see an ordinary street in a different way.
41. Why was He Yu curious about the old street names?
A. The old names no longer matched what he saw there.
B. His grandfather could not read the names.
C. Every road had the same name.
D. The names were written in English.
42. Where did the boat lane lead in the past?
A. To a rice shop on a hill.
B. To a large tree.
C. To a new bus station.
D. To an old river stop.
43. What did workers carry up the stone steps?
A. Street maps.
B. Goods.
C. Young trees.
D. Boat seats.
44. What does the word “They” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. New buildings.
B. Old houses.
C. The old street names.
D. Heavy baskets.
45. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Old street names can hold memories of local life.
B. Every old street should become a market again.
C. Buses have made street names unnecessary.
D. He Yu wanted to change all the street names.
【答案】41. A 42. D 43. B 44. C 45. A

43. B。细节理解题。根据第二段“Workers carried goods up the stone steps”可知,工人沿石阶搬运货物,故选B。
44. C。词句猜测题。根据前句“Still, some names remain”以及后句对街名保存地方记忆的说明可知,They指的是仍然保留下来的老街名称,故选C。
