On the evening of August 16, 2025, Pang Zhongwang, a doctoral (博士学位的) student from Tsinghua University, was named a “Touching China” 2024 Awardee (获奖者). His story—from a young man who beat great hardships to an inspiring (鼓舞人心的) person—has warmed and encouraged many people.
Pang was born into a poor family and faced big difficulties. His father has a mental illness, and his mother was born with a disease and had her legs cut off, so she can hardly move. Pang himself had a heart problem from birth. To help his family, he went to many houses to borrow money for his mother’s treatment and picked up old things to pay the family’s debts (债务). But he stayed happy and believed, “Knowledge changes life.” So when in school, Pang studied very hard. Every day, he walked a long way to go to school. Even if he only had a small light, he still studied late at night. He always became one of the top students in his class.
In 2017, Pang took the gaokao. He got an amazing score of 684 points! He was successful in being accepted into Tsinghua University. At the University, he chose to learn engineering. He continued to work hard and studied diligently (勤勉地) as always. Sadly, his mother died in 2020. That was just before he got the chance to study for a doctorate at Tsinghua. His mother named him “Zhongwang,” which means “the hope of all.” She told him to always look forward. “Mom smiles every day—why should I feel sad?” Actually, he did very well in his studies and later became a PhD (哲学博士) student. He took part in important research projects and even invented new technologies. Now, he has three national patents (专利) for his inventions, and his work is helpful in areas like environmental monitoring and disaster warning systems.
Pang never forgot where he came from. After he succeeded, he used his success to help others. He donated money to help poor children go to school, and he also supported health funds (基金) for kids who have heart diseases. Besides, he became a tourism ambassador (旅游大使) for his hometown because he wanted to help promote (促进) the local culture and economy (经济).
As the award speech says: “You leave hardships behind, face life with a smile, and move forward with strength.” Pang’s life tells us that if we are strong and have hope, we can all live up to expectations and create our own brilliance (辉煌).

What do you think of when you think about Tang Dynasty art? One feature (特点) about china, paintings and clothing from that time was that they used a lot of different colors.
This was also true for women’s faces. The ladies back then were given much freedom to express their beauty. They used makeup (化妆品) with brighter colors than before. They put makeup mainly on their faces, forehead, eyebrows and cheeks to look more beautiful and graceful.
“Women’s facial makeup in the Tang Dynasty was different from today. They put yellow powder on their foreheads. It was called the ‘yellow forehead,’” explains Sun Ji of the Museum of Chinese History. Just like the “yellow forehead”, the “green eyebrows” was also a makeup word. ▲ They dyed their eyebrows green to make themselves look nice. Later, the green color got darker and turned black.
Besides the yellow forehead and green eyebrows, they also stuck a flower-like decoration between their eyebrows. The shapes were different. The simplest one was a round dot (小点). A fancier one could look like a pair of wings.
Nowadays, most of us may not think the Tang Dynasty makeup is very beautiful. “Aesthetics change,” Sun says. “For example, in the early Tang Dynasty, women thought wide eyebrows were pretty. They also put two dots at the corners of their mouths. They were usually light in color.”
One thing remains unchanged, though: People always like to look for beauty. And however “strange” the Tang style might seem today, it is part of the special charm of this great dynasty.

11. What does the underlined word “Aesthetics” mean?
A. Cost of makeup.
B. Ideas of beauty.
C. Colors of makeup.
D. Popularity of art.
12. What can we infer from the passage?
A. The “yellow forehead” makeup is still quite popular now.
B. Tang Dynasty art makes no difference to modern art at all.
C. People in different times have different standards of beauty.
D. People’s understanding of beauty has always stayed the same.
D
Have you heard of microplastics (微塑料)? Can we see them in our daily life? Are they good or bad for human beings?
Microplastics are very small. According to National Geographic, microplastics are usually less than five millimeters (毫米) in size. But they bring big problems. This small size lets them go everywhere, even in water and air. They don’t break down easily and can stay in the environment for hundreds of years. A new study said that by 2040, microplastic pollution could be twice as bad as it is now.
Microplastics are very small pieces of plastic. They come from many places. For example, about 60 percent of material made into clothes is plastic. Every time the clothes are washed, they produce microplastics. When water bottles and other big plastic products are left outside, they break down slowly into microplastics. These microplastics can be bad for our health and even cause cancer. In August, The Conversation reported that scientists found microplastics in people’s brains for the first time. They may hurt brain cells (细胞) and change how the brain works.
Wild animals are also at risk from microplastic pollution. Each year, up to three million tons of plastics end up in the ocean. As they break down day by day, they gradually (逐渐地) become virtually invisible. Fish may eat them by mistake and become very sick.
To deal with the problem, scientists think the best way right now is to make and use less plastic. As students, we can reduce plastic things in our daily life, such as using glass or metal cups instead of plastic bottles and cups.
13. The writer starts the text by ________.
A. telling stories B. listing numbers C. asking questions D. giving examples
14. What can we know about microplastics from the passage?
A. Microplastics are often over five millimeters.
B. It is difficult for microplastics to break down.
C. Microplastics can help people’s brain work better.
D. Microplastics do little harm to wild animals.
15. What is the main idea of paragraph 3?
A. Explaining how microplastics are used in clothing.
B. Showing the latest research on how human brains work.
C. Describing the ways of recycling water bottles correctly.
D. Introducing the sources and dangers of microplastics.
16. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Solutions to Microplastic Pollution
B. Tiny Pieces of Plastic Causing Big Problems
C. Future of Ocean Pollution from Microplastics
D. First Finding of Microplastics in Human Brains

In 1998, Wang Chengbang retired (退休) from the army. Instead of enjoying a relaxing life, he volunteered to save the soil from desertification (沙漠化) by planting trees in Korla (库尔勒), Xinjiang.
It is not an easy job. The high temperature in Korla makes it difficult for anyone to work day after day in the sunshine. Besides, lacking of water is a big problem. Actually, Wang Chengbang’s work in the first few years failed as very few trees survived (存活).
But Wang Chengbang would not give up. “After trying many different ways, I have learned how to grow young trees in a better way,” said Wang Chengbang. He also worked out new ways to save water. With his hard work, more and more trees have survived. So far, he has planted more than 1.5 million trees. Those green trees prevent desertification, make the air cleaner and protect people from the hot sun. Now, Korla is a model city in environmental protection.
Wang Chengbang is also successful in fighting cancer (癌症). In 2005, he had cancer and was told that he had only six months to live. However, he continued taking care of his trees instead of lying on the hospital bed. “Working is the best medicine. Planting trees helps to fight cancer,” he often jokes.
Now at the age of 85, Wang Chengbang is still working.
