In Shandong’s countryside, three women are breaking down old ideas. They are using their talents and strong will to change their lives.
Li Xiaoxia was once an English teacher. After retiring (退休), she learned to use modern farming technologies to grow apples, turning her farm into a model for growing better and more apples. Apples were her hobby to sell, so she began making English videos to sell them. Her videos are popular, and now she usually sells over 400 boxes of apples daily. “I want to show not just apples but everything wonderful about my hometown,” Li said.
Wang Xia runs a baozi shop in Qufu. Different from Li, she started learning English two years ago to set an example for her son. Her videos recorded her journey from “broken English” to speaking fluently. After sharing her progress online, she got 17,000 fans, with some even visiting her shop to taste her baozi.
Lyu Yuxia, a fruit farmer in Mengyin, loves writing a lot. She writes about her daily life and the beauty of her hometown. “In my childhood, my father, a teacher, loved telling me history stories and poems while doing farm work. The Dead Sea lies in the Jordan Rift Valley in Southwest Asia, and it is about 80 kilometers long and 18 kilometers wide. What’s interesting is that the Dead Sea isn’t actually a sea. It’s a lake with a salt concentration (浓度) of more than 30 per cent. That is about eight times saltier than common sea water.
The Dead Sea stays so salty because of its special natural conditions. It is the lowest place on the Earth’s land so there is no outlet (出口) for the Dead Sea. Each year, it receives very little rainfall. And the hot weather around the Dead Sea causes the fresh water to evaporate (蒸发) quickly. That makes the salt concentration even higher. For these reasons, it is also known as the Salt Sea.
If you swim in the Dead Sea, you won’t see any sea life. The high salt concentration makes it impossible for them to live there. That’s actually why it’s called the Dead Sea.
However, don’t be afraid of the name. If you fall into the Dead Sea and can’t swim, don’t worry. The high concentration of salt in the Dead Sea allows anyone to float (漂浮) well. In fact, many people visit the Dead Sea every year on vacation. They like floating in the water, reading books or magazines. But too many visitors also cause some problems. The Dead Sea may face more challenges.
43. How does the writer start the text?
A. By giving examples. B. By asking questions.
C. By showing some facts. D. By telling a story.
44. What causes the Dead Sea to have such a high salt concentration?
① below sea level ② little rainfall ③ hot weather ④ human activities
A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ①③④ D. ②③④
45. What can we infer from the text?
A. The Dead Sea will become less salty in the future.
B. Plants and animals are growing more in the Dead Sea.
C. The salt concentration of the Dead Sea is more than 30 per cent.
D. If you can’t swim, you will be unsafe in the Dead Sea.

Zhang Wei hesitated (犹豫) but started noticing something that he was missing: he didn’t know his neighbors, and never visited the local park. “Maybe you’re right,” he told Wang Fang the next day. “Can you teach me about photography?” “Meet me at the park after school,” Wang Fang smiled.
At first, he found it hard to focus. “This is harder than I thought,” he told Wang Fang during their first photo walk. “I just can’t stop thinking about my phone.” “Give it time,” Wang Fang said, pointing to a butterfly. “Look! You would miss this if you were on your phone.”
Weeks later, Zhang Wei gradually checked his phone less. Soon, he joined the photography club with Wang Fang. On a weekend trip to the woods, he said, “I can’t believe I used to think this was boring.”
