◆ take hold of(2026 一卷)
As the engine coughed and died, pure terror took hold of her.
◆ seize(2026 一卷)
Panic seized her the moment the phone showed no signal.
⚠ seize 是"一瞬间的突袭",专写情绪袭来的那一秒(常配 the moment / instantly);被动式 be seized by panic 亦可。
◆ suffocate(2026 一卷)
In the freezing car, the silence itself seemed to suffocate her.
⚠ suffocate 本义"窒息",比喻义"压抑得喘不过气";主语常是 silence / the atmosphere / the air 这类"环境";人作主语时要写 feel suffocated by。
◆ paralyze(2026 一卷)
Fear paralyzed her; she couldn't even reach for the blanket beside her.
◆ weigh on / weigh heavily on(2025 一卷)
The unspoken apology weighed heavily on my mind wherever I went.
⚠ weigh on 不用被动:~~was weighed on~~ ✗;要加重程度就加 heavily;宾语常为 mind / heart / conscience。
◆ weigh sb down(2025 一卷)
Guilt weighed me down as I slowly climbed the steps to his door.
◆ eat away at(2025 一卷)
The memory of that rainy parting ate away at me for two whole months.
⚠ 主语须是"记忆/烦恼/情绪"(the memory / his silence / the thought),不能是人;at 不可省略。
◆ gnaw at(2025 一卷)
Guilt gnawed at me day and night until I finally picked up the phone.
⚠ gnaw 读 /nɔː/,开头的 g 不发音(同 gnome);最高频搭配是 gnaw at one's conscience / mind;名词化 a gnawing sense of guilt 同样加分。
◆ nibble away at(2025 一卷)
Each unanswered text nibbled away at my stubbornness.
◆ erode
His cold silence eroded all the excuses I had prepared.
◆ hang over sb like a dark cloud(2025 一卷)
For two months, his cold reply hung over me like a dark cloud.
⚠ 固定明喻,只能用 like,不能换成 as;前面常加 for weeks / for months 点明"驱不散"。
◆ haunt(2025 一卷)
The image of his taillights disappearing into the rain haunted me for weeks.
⚠ 宾语必须是"人"(haunted me ✓,~~I haunted the memory~~ ✗);主语常为 memory / image / sight;熟词生义:a haunted look 惊恐的表情。
◆ linger(2026 一卷)
The warmth of their kindness lingered long after the snow had melted.
⚠ linger 是不及物动词,后面不能直接接宾语;作定语用 lingering(a lingering doubt / a lingering unease);注意本句是"正面情绪的余波",正负皆可。
◆ be swallowed by / swallow(2026 一卷)
Outside the café window, the world had been swallowed by snow.
The snow swallowed the road.(更简洁);被动式 by 后接"庞然大物"(黑暗、大雪、夜色)。
◆ be engulfed by / in(2026 一卷)
At the sight of "No Service" on her screen, Emily was engulfed by panic.
◆ be consumed by(2025 一卷)
He had been consumed by guilt ever since that rainy evening.
◆ be overwhelmed by / with(2026 一卷)
Overwhelmed by gratitude, Emily could barely whisper her thanks.
⚠ ⚠ 本族中唯一"正负通吃"的词:overwhelmed by guilt(负)与 overwhelmed with gratitude(正)都对。
◆ wash over(2026 一卷)
A wave of relief washed over her as the train finally pulled out.
◆ a knot in one's stomach(2025 一卷)
A knot tightened in my stomach as I raised my fist to knock.
◆ have butterflies in one's stomach(2026 一卷)
Emily had butterflies in her stomach as the train neared Toronto — she was finally going to meet his family.
◆ a lump in one's throat(2026 一卷)
A lump rose in her throat when Daniel handed her the suitcase.
⚠ 专写"感动或悲伤到想哭却忍住"的瞬间;动词用 rise / form;后面常接 but she held back her tears 之类的克制描写。
◆ one's heart hammered against one's ribs(2026 一卷)
Her heart hammered against her ribs as she waited, alone, for dawn.
◆ the blood drained from one's face(2026 一卷)
The blood drained from her face as the car slid into the ditch.
⚠ 主语是 blood(不是 her face),drain 意为"流走";专写"看到坏消息的一瞬间";同类表达:the smile froze on her face。
