The traditional Chinese lunar calendar divides the year into 24 solar terms (节气). Grain Rain, as the last term in spring, starts on April 19 and ends on May 4.
Grain Rain comes from the old saying, “Rain brings the growth of hundreds of grains”, which shows that this period of rainfall is very important for the growth of crops. Here’s something that you may not know about the Grain Rain.

3. People in northern China have the tradition to eat the vegetable toona sinensis during Grain Rain. An old Chinese saying goes “toona sinensis before the rain is as tender as silk”. The vegetable is good for the stomach and skin.
4. The Grain Rain Festival is celebrated by fishing villages in northern China. Grain Rain marks the start of the fishermen’s first voyage (航行) of the year. The custom dates back to more than 2,000 years ago.

Improvements in technology often happen overnight. Some gadgets get smaller and faster. Others are replaced by newer things like smartphones. They can do hundreds of things. Here are some old gadgets that people used to use.
Call me
Do you have a landline at home? These are phones that people plug (插入) into their living room walls.
Mobile phones didn’t use to be so common at that time, so most families had a landline. But landlines only worked at home. What did people do when they were outside and needed to call someone? They looked for a pay phone! Then, most people had their own mobile phones and many homes no longer had landlines.

People today store plenty of information online, or on SD cards. But in the 1980s and 1990s, people used to use floppy disks (软盘). The first floppy disks were large, expensive, and not very useful—each disk could store just 175 KB of information! Later, floppy disks got smaller and better. But even the best ones could only hold 1.44 MB. You would need three or four disks just for one song, and about 22,000 disks to match the storage (储存空间) available on a 32GB phone!
Picture This
It’s easy to take photos today. People often have thousands just on their phones! But photos used to be expensive, and people took fewer of them. To take a photo, you had to buy a roll of film. This allowed you to take about 30 photos. After finishing the roll, you left it at a shop. The shop developed the photos to make them be seen, which you could collect after a few days.
Technology changes all the time, and the gadgets we use today will one day be old. What do you think will be next to disappear?
4. What does the underlined word “gadgets” mean in Paragraph 1?
A. Toys. B. Tools. C. Games. D. Phones.
5. Which of the following can be best put in “ ▲ ” in Paragraph 3?
A. Goodbye Disks. B. Online Music. C. Information Development. D. Phone Storage.
6. What can we get from the passage?
A. People outside used landlines to call someone.
B. The first floppy disks cost a lot of money.
C. It was convenient to take photos with film.
D. Technology changes all the time and it always takes place overnight.
7. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. The Changing Phones. B. The Products of Tomorrow.
C. Old Things We Use Today. D. The Things We Used to Use.
C
①Curiosity is our wish to explore, discover, and learn. From a young age, it helps us understand the world around us. Think of a baby reaching for a toy, a child asking “why,” or a scientist on a project. These actions show that curiosity is a basic part of human nature. Curiosity isn’t just for kids; it stays strong all our lives, helping us grow and learn more.
②Why is curiosity so important? First, it starts all learning and new ideas. If we don’t ask questions and look for answers, we won’t learn new things, and society will stop moving forward. Curious people learn new things better. They remember them easily and use them in different situations. They understand many subjects better and can connect different ideas. This helps them find clever new ways to solve problems more effectively.
③Also, curiosity helps us feel good about ourselves. When curious, we pay more attention, avoid boredom, and feel less stuck. It makes us try new things, even hard ones. We experience new things and meet people. This continuous exploration makes our lives richer, making us enjoy the world more. It also helps us adapt and be strong when facing new or unknown things. It keeps our minds open to many chances.
④Curiosity is truly an important part of who we are. It powers all learning and new finds, making us connect ideas and solve problems better. Beyond that, it makes our lives much richer and more enjoyable. It also helps us face new challenges with an open mind. Therefore, by always staying curious, we can keep growing, exploring, and making our lives wonderfully meaningful.
8. What does the first paragraph mainly talk about?
A. How to be curious. B. What human nature is.
C. What curiosity is. D. Why we need curiosity.
9. What will happen if we don’t ask questions and look for answers?
A. Society will stop developing. B. We will learn new things better.
C. Our lives will become richer. D. We will feel good about ourselves.
10. What does “It” in the third paragraph refer to?
A. A good feeling. B. New experiences. C. Trying hard. D. Curiosity.
11. What’s the structure of this passage?
A. B. C. D.
D
The Lantern Festival is a traditional festival in China when people light lanterns, set off fireworks (放烟花), eat yuanxiao, and enjoy family time. But do you know how this festival started?
In the Han Dynasty, there was a man named Dongfang Shuo who worked for Emperor Wu of Han. One day, Dongfang met a crying maid (哭泣的宫女) named Yuanxiao. He asked her what happened. And the maid said she was sad because she couldn’t see her family.
Dongfang promised to help Yuanxiao. He left the garden and went to the street. He started telling people that a big fire would happen on the 15th day of the first lunar month. It was the order of the Jade Emperor (玉皇大帝). The news spread quickly, and people in the city were scared.
The Emperor Wu of Han heard of it and asked Dongfang for advice. Dongfang advised him to let Yuanxiao make rice balls for the God of Fire to make him happy. He also advised everyone in the city to put up red lanterns and set off fireworks to create an illusion (假象) that the city was on fire. Seeing this, the Jade Emperor would not set fire.
On the special day, the city was full of people and lanterns. Yuanxiao’s parents were able to meet up with their daughter in the crowd. The city was safe, and Emperor Wu of Han was happy. He ordered that every year on this day, people should make rice balls and hang lanterns.
From then on, the 15th day of the first lunar month has been called the Lantern Festival or Yuanxiao Jie. Since Yuanxiao cooked the best rice balls, people call the food yuanxiao or tangyuan.

It is believed that the Chinese Spring Festival is the most important festival in our country. It is celebrated on the first day of the lunar year.
During the Spring Festival in 2023, I put on new clothes and visited many relatives. I was excited to receive lucky money from elders. In the evening, our big family got together to enjoy jiaozi and other delicious food. After dinner, we watched the Spring Festival gala, with such fantastic programs that I still remember them vividly.
Now, it’s October. I’m looking forward to this year’s Spring Festival. I’m sure I will have a good time then.
