A new set of words was added to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) in its September 2024 update. The OED has 500,000 words and phrases and their meanings. It updates its list four times a year.
This time, more than 600 new words were added, including some Welsh words as well as Caribbean-English, East African-English and New Zealand-English words. These words were added because people have been using them in many different English writings for a long time.
Some of the Welsh words added included “iechyd da” (good health) and “ych a fi” (a strong feeling of dislike). There were also food-related words like “sglods” (chips) and “cawl” (a traditional Welsh soup made with meat and vegetables). The name of the Welsh Parliament (议会), “Senedd”, was also included.
From Guyana, a South American country that speaks English, some Caribbean-English words were added, like “butter flap” (a soft, sweet buttery white bread) and “salara” (a spiced coconut filling bread). The phrase “hard ears” which describes a child who is unwilling to listen was also added. From Uganda in East Africa, the word “rolex” was included, which is a shortened form of “rolled eggs”.
New Zealand-English words added included “chilly bin” (a container to keep food and drinks cool) and “kapa haka” (a Maori performing arts group that also describes Maori dancing, singing and chanting).
The OED wanted to show the diversity (多样性) of English spoken around the world and added these words to help achieve that goal.
8. What do the new words added to the OED have in common?
A. They are all about food.
B. They are all newly invented words.
C. They are all from different countries.
D. They have been in use for a long time.

A. Iechyd da. B. Sglods. C. Hard ears. D. Kapa haka.
10. What is the main purpose of the OED’s updates?
A. To show English’s variety. B. To make more people use English.
C. To meet the needs of the parliament. D. To let people know more about it.
11. What does the passage mainly talk about?
A. The change in English worldwide.
B. The importance of updating English words.
C. The history of the Oxford English Dictionary.
D. The recent update of the Oxford English Dictionary.
D
The toothbrush is a common thing that most people use every day, but how much do you really know about this seemingly simple tool? Believe it or not, the toothbrush has a very long and interesting history.
The first toothbrushes were actually small twigs (嫩枝) that people would chew (咀嚼) on one end to soften the bristles (短而硬的纤维). These bristles were then used to clean their teeth.
The first “modern” toothbrushes were made in China around 1498. These toothbrushes were made of pig hair and were much more comfortable to use than the twigs. In 1780, William Addis of England came up with the idea of making small holes in a bone (骨头) and putting bristles into the holes. He then glued the bone to a handle (柄). This design worked much better than the twigs and pig hair brushes and quickly became very popular. In 1845, the first toothbrush that was produced in large numbers was created by H.N. Wadsworth. His toothbrush was made of bone and bristles and was very similar to William Addis’ design. The first nylon toothbrush was created in 1938 by DuPont. Nylon bristles were much more effective at cleaning teeth than natural bristles and quickly became the standard.
Today, toothbrushes come in all shapes and sizes and are made from all kinds of materials. You can even buy electric toothbrushes that do all the work for you!
Who would have thought that such a simple tool could have such an interesting history? The next time you reach for your toothbrush, take a moment to think about all the people who have used a toothbrush before you and all the people who will use one after you.
12. What did people usually do with the twigs before brushing their teeth with them?
A. They chewed on them. B. They cut them into two pieces.
C. They glued them to a handle. D. They made small holes on them.
13. Who invented the first toothbrush that was produced in large amounts ?
A. William Addis B. H.N. Wadsworth C. DuPont D. Anthony Wood
14. What is the right order of the following events?
① The nylon toothbrush came out.
② Pig hair was used to make toothbrushes.
③ Electric toothbrushes appeared in people’s life.
④ Toothbrushes with handles became popular in people’s life.
A. ①②④③ B. ①④②③ C. ②④①③ D. ④①②③
15. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The importance of the toothbrush B. Suggestions on using the toothbrush
C. Different opinions about the toothbrush D. The interesting history of the toothbrush

Time Management
If there is one thing that most teenagers don’t seem to have enough of, it is time. With proper time management, busy teenagers can achieve better academic results while still having time for extracurricular activities. ___16___
Create a schedule. ___17___ At the beginning of each week, create a schedule that maps out all your major items and the time available. Decide which tasks are the most urgent, and plan to do these first.

Make the most of every second. While you are travelling to school or waiting for a friend to turn up, you probably find yourself checking or posting on social media. Instead use this time to do one or more of your small tasks. By getting some reading done during your unexpected free time, you’ll end up saving a lot of time.
___19___ Everyone has their own natural rhythm for learning. Whether you’re an early bird or a night owl, identify the time when you are most productive. Use that time to get through your to-do list and you’ll be more efficient.
Finally, remember to take breaks. Studying for too long without resting can make you tired and less productive. ___20___ Taking short breaks during study sessions — such as stretching, having a snack, or listening to a song — can actually improve your focus and help you learn better.
By following these simple steps, you can make better use of your time, reduce stress, and enjoy a more balanced life.

There came a new neighbor, a middle-aged man. He always looked serious, and a scar on his cheek made him seem scary. Because of his rough appearance and quiet manner, I, like many others in the neighborhood, thought he was cold and unfriendly. People often whispered that he was difficult to get along with. I also kept my distance from him and tried not to talk to him.
One rainy afternoon, however, an unexpected event changed my view. My cat, Mimi, climbed up a tall tree and got trapped. She was too scared to come down. To make things worse, my parents were not at home. I stood under the tree, filled with anxiety and helplessness.
Just then, the man appeared. “Don’t worry,” he said softly. To my surprise, he took out a small bag of cat treats and began calling Mimi gently. He moved slowly, careful not to frighten her. Within a few minutes, Mimi jumped down into his arms. At that moment I thought he was actually kind and helpful. I expressed my thanks to him.
After that time, I started paying visits to him from time to time. I helped him carry heavy boxes or fix things around his house. In return, he shared stories about his younger days. Through these conversations, I found he was often lonely, as he missed his sons who worked far away. Slowly, we became good friends. My previous wrong judgment of him was a complete misunderstanding.
This experience taught me a valuable lesson. We should never judge a person by their appearance or by what others say. True character is often hidden beneath the surface. Taking time to understand others not only builds a meaningful bond but also enriches our own lives.

A 13. B 14. C 15. D
根据第二段中“The first toothbrushes were actually small twigs that people would chew on one end to soften the bristles.(最早的牙刷实际上是小树枝,人们会咀嚼一端以软化刷毛)”可知,人们用树枝刷牙前通常会咀嚼它们。
根据第三段中“In 1845, the first toothbrush that was produced in large numbers was created by H.N. Wadsworth.(第一批“现代 牙刷大约于1498年在中国诞生)”可知,第一把大量生产的牙刷是由H.N. Wadsworth发明的。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“The first “modern” toothbrushes were made in China around 1498. Nylon bristles were much more effective at cleaning teeth than natural bristles and quickly became the standard.(第一批“现代 牙刷大约于1498年在中国诞生。
根据第一段“The toothbrush is a common thing that most people use every day, but how much do you really know about this seemingly simple tool? Believe it or not, the toothbrush has a very long and interesting history.(牙刷是大多数人每天使用的常见工具,但你对这个看似简单的工具了解多少?
