When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest. I said no without thinking, for I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language and writing was painful for me.
When I asked why, he replied, "Because I love your stories. If you're willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this." Encouraged, I agreed to try.
I chose Paul Revere's horse as my subject—Revere was a silversmith who rode at night in 1775 to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come straight from the horse's mouth: funny, and unlikely to be anyone else's choice.
I sympathized with the horse: it got tired, had doubts, wanted to quit, but kept going—just like me. I worked hard, checked my spelling, asked my sister to correct my grammar, and borrowed books from the library.
When I handed in the essay, my teacher laughed and said, "Great. Now, write it again." I wrote it again and again, until the thought of winning gave way to the enjoyment of writing. If I didn't win, I wouldn't care.
A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news.
I went to my teacher's office after the award presentation.
I said no / did not love writing / English second language(第1段) → 第二段以had once hated writing与now words flowed形成今昔对比
老师"I love your stories / have a good shot"(第2段) → 第一段上台致谢、第二段"a born writer"回应老师当初的鼓励
Paul Revere's horse(第3段核心意象) → 第二段以Paul Revere's brave horse forever spurring me on回收,意象贯穿
write it again and again / enjoyment(第5段) → 第二段words flowed as naturally as breathing体现反复打磨后的蜕变
【定接】紧承there came the news交代获奖;第一段以颁奖发言收束,第二段after presentation顺势进入办公室
A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news"可知,第一段要写获奖消息传来、"我"激动地跑去告诉老师,以及颁奖典礼上上台发言致谢,用密集动作链推进喜悦情绪。
Paragraph 1
A few weeks later, when I almost forgot the contest, there came the news. My hands trembled as I unfolded the letter: I had won first prize, with a ceremony in two days. My heart leaping with joy, I dashed to my teacher's office, the words tumbling out before I caught my breath. "I knew it!" he exclaimed, eyes crinkling into a smile, "I'm proud of you. You made it!" On the ceremony day, legs shaking, I climbed onto the stage and declared steadily that it was my teacher who had lit the flame of writing in me.
(Paragraph 1)
① My hands trembled as I unfolded the letter: I had won first prize, with a ceremony in two days.
② My heart leaping with joy, I dashed to my teacher's office, the words tumbling out before I caught my breath.
③ "I knew it!" he exclaimed, eyes crinkling into a smile, "I'm proud of you. You made it!"
④ On the ceremony day, legs shaking, I climbed onto the stage and declared steadily that it was my teacher who had lit the flame of writing in me.
Paragraph 2
I went to my teacher's office after the award presentation. He was waiting by the window, two cups of hot chocolate in hand. "You're a born writer," he said softly, pressing one into mine, "so never stop." Looking into his encouraging face, I confessed that I had once hated writing, yet now words flowed from my pen as naturally as breathing. From then on, I kept writing story after story, Paul Revere's brave horse forever spurring me on. I owe everything to that teacher, who taught me that self-belief turns "I can't" into "I did".
(Paragraph 2)
① He was waiting by the window, two cups of hot chocolate in hand.
② "You're a born writer," he said softly, pressing one into mine, "so never stop."
③ Looking into his encouraging face, I confessed that I had once hated writing, yet now words flowed from my pen as naturally as breathing.
【现在分词作状语+今昔对比+as…as】had once hated 与 now flowed 构成今昔对比,as naturally as breathing 比喻蜕变。
④ From then on, I kept writing story after story, Paul Revere's brave horse forever spurring me on.
【独立主格回收意象】forever spurring me on 回扣原文 Paul Revere's horse 核心意象,首尾圆合。
⑤ I owe everything to that teacher, who taught me that self-belief turns "I can't" into "I did".
【非限制性定语从句+turn A into B】who 补充老师教诲,turn…into…

鞭策、激励:encourage → spur on
天生的:natural → born
把……归功于:thank...for → owe...to
