Ideas shape our world. But where do great ideas come from? Many people believe great ideas just suddenly pop into people’s heads. However, most good ideas do not arrive out of nowhere. They grow from hard work, observation and reflection.
Thomas Edison is famous for thousands of creative ideas. People often think his inventions came from sudden inspiration. In fact, he spent thousands of hours doing experiments, reading notes and correcting mistakes. “Genius is one percent inspiration and ninetynine percent perspiration,” he once said. The onepercent idea cannot work without the ninetyninepercent hard work.
Observing daily life is another important source of ideas. Many useful inventions come from small problems in ordinary life. When people keep their eyes open and think about how to solve those problems, new ideas will appear.
Besides hard work and observation, reflection matters a lot. It is not enough just to collect information. You need time to think over what you have seen and learned. You may write down your thoughts in notebooks. Writing helps you organize your scattered (零散的) thoughts and turn them into complete ideas.
A great idea seldom comes in a single moment. It is a longterm process. Even when your first thought is not perfect, don’t give it up. Keep working, watching and thinking, and your idea will become better little by little.
6. What do many people think about great ideas?
A. They are produced from longtime hard work.
B. They appear in people’s mind all of a sudden.
C. They mainly come from reading old notebooks.
D. They are built on solving big social problems.
7. What does Edison’s words mean in the passage?
A. Inspiration is more important than hard work.
B. One can become a genius without any effort.
C. Hard work plays a key role in creative inventions.
D. Experiments are useless for new inventions.
8. What is the meaning of the underlined word “reflection” in paragraph4?
A. 反思 B. 复述 C. 复制 D. 复习
9. Which is NOT mentioned as the source of great ideas?
A. Plenty of hard work B. Careful observation of daily life
C. Enough time for thinking D. Travelling to different places
10. What is the best title for this passage?
A. How great ideas are born B. The most famous inventor Edison
C. Ways to solve dailylife problems D. The importance of keeping notebooks

Tu Youyou is one of the greatest medical researchers in China. Her idea of finding medicine for malaria (疟疾) came from ancient Chinese medical books. For hundreds of years, malaria made millions of people sick across the world. In the 1960s, Tu Youyou started her hard research work.
Traditional Chinese medicine records gave her new thoughts. She read hundreds of old medical texts and tested more than 200 kinds of plants. After hundreds of failed experiments, she finally got artemisinin (青蒿素) in 1971. This great idea from ancient books turned into lifesaving medicine. Since then, artemisinin has saved millions of lives around the world. In 2015, Tu Youyou won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
However, the success was never easy. At that time, lab conditions were poor. Tu and her team worked in simple rooms, without modern equipment. Many experiments ended in failure. But she never lost confidence. She kept adjusting her research methods according to records of traditional Chinese medicine.
Tu Youyou’s story tells us: old wisdom can give birth to new powerful ideas. We should respect traditional culture, but we also need modern scientific tests to turn ancient thoughts into realworld results. One good idea, combined with lasting efforts, can change the lives of millions.
11. Where did Tu Youyou get her creative idea for malaria treatment?
A. Modern western medical magazines
B. Ancient Chinese medical books
C. Her overseas university teachers
D. Medical reports from foreign hospitals
12. When did Tu Youyou get artemisinin?
A. In 1960 B. In 1971 C. In 2015 D. In 2026
13. What difficulty did Tu Youyou’s team meet during research?
A. They had too many experienced workers.
B. They got lots of money for experiments.
C. Their lab working conditions were terrible.
D. They had plenty of modern lab equipment.
14. What influence does artemisinin bring to the world?
A. It helps save millions of people’s lives.
B. It completely stops all kinds of diseases.
C. It makes all traditional medicine popular.
D. It helps Chinese labs get much money.
15. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Traditional Chinese medicine is perfect without tests.
B. Tu Youyou’s great idea from ancient wisdom plus hard work brings great changes.
C. How to win the Nobel Prize in medical field.
D. The history of malaria in the whole world.
