What do you know about typhoons? Typhoons are some of the worst storms, usually around the Pacific Ocean, such as the South China Sea. Most happen from July to September.
How does a typhoon happen? When lots of sea water gets hot in the summer sun, it evaporates into the air. This makes the air hotter. When the air gets warm enough, it starts to move higher up into the sky. Then, cooler air around it rushes in. It fills the space that is left. After the air gets warmer, it starts to move quickly, making wind. The wind goes in circles and it keeps moving higher in the sky. The warmer the air gets, the more quickly the wind moves. And when the wind moves the same as or faster than 32.7 m/s, a typhoon begins.
A typhoon has three parts. One is the eye. In the eye, the wind does not move so fast. Another part is the wall of clouds around the eye. Here are the strongest winds and hardest rain. The other is the area of spiral rain band (螺旋雨带区).
Typhoons are very dangerous. In November, 2013, Super Typhoon Haiyan killed over 6,300 people in the Philippines. What can you do when a typhoon hits?
·Stay inside. Close all the windows and stay away from them.
·Try to bring all of your things inside. Strong winds can even blow away your bikes!
·Listen to the radio or watch TV for important information.

②The sun makes sea water hot.
③The air moves quickly, making wind.
④When the wind moves fast enough, a typhoon starts.

On April 19, 2026, at the Beijing E-Town half marathon (马拉松), a humanoid robot named “Flash” crossed the finish line in 50'26", beating the human world record of 57'20" in 2025. For the first time, a machine had outrun the best human runners in a long-distance race.
This was no accident. The victory showed that robots had reached a new level of skill in working independently. More than 40 percent of the competing robots ran completely on their own. Using only sensors (传感器), cameras and other tools, these robots could see the road in real time and independently complete difficult tasks such as avoiding obstacles (障碍物) and planning their own ways. Even the course itself was made more challenging by including hills and turns. Yet, the leading self-driving robots still did well with added difficulties.
Besides, engineers used to need several minutes to change the battery and restart the robot. This year, however, the process only took a few seconds with the development of hot-swap battery technology (热插拔电池技术). With it, the robot no longer needed to shut down, saving much time. The marathon is more than a sports event. It’s a real-world test for robots. This helps engineers find their weaknesses and improve their designs, which opens the door for robots to be used more widely—in factories, in hospitals, and even at home helping people.
We are now seeing the rise of smarter machines that are learning to live in our world. Clearly, the robot race has only just begun.

About one year ago, my grandfather was ill. His illness influenced his legs, which made it difficult for him to walk. Then my family started looking for nursing homes. It took us two weeks before making a decision. Unluckily, he had to stay there until he improved. Then I knew the care and service old people needed and how important it was to volunteer (做志愿者) at a nursing home.
I did volunteer work at my grandfather’s nursing home last summer. I volunteered two times a week during the summer. I learned many things about nursing homes, including the old people’s life, the care they received and the environment around them.
I worked with Dr. Smith, the one who planned activities for the old. I read their children’s letters to them. Besides, I helped them on special days like Ice Cream Day, Summer Picnic Day and Clown Around Day. I also took the old people for walks or had birthday parties for them.
I had many good experiences both volunteering and visiting my grandfather. My volunteering experience showed that I could bring joy to old people. Everyone will have to face their parents and grandparents growing older.

Recently, a short video from Chongqing has become hot on the Internet. In the video, a bus was moving on the road in a village. When the driver noticed a schoolbag hanging outside the door of an old house, he stopped and honked (按喇叭). Soon, a boy rushed outside, carried the schoolbag and got on the bus quickly.
The name of the bus driver is Cheng Lin. He has driven from Luotian to Wuqiao Nan Station for many years. There are many left-behind children along the way— they go to school in the city on Sundays and come back on Fridays. Cheng really knows the importance of his role on their way to and from school, so he pays a lot of attention to them.
The boy is a Grade 9 student who goes to school by himself. He lives with his grandmother because his parents both work in another city and seldom come back. Since Mr. Cheng knew about that, he has been caring about him a lot. In order to communicate with each other better, they have even developed a secret code (密码). If the boy needs to catch the bus, he will hang his schoolbag outside. When Mr. Cheng sees it, he will honk and the sound will remind the boy to get on.
The boy’s parents saw the video. “As parents, we feel very happy because someone is taking good care of our child. We are also very thankful to Mr. Cheng,” says the father.
Mr. Cheng’s story is widely known and he is highly praised as a good driver. However, he says it’s just a little thing and that he will continue doing it as long as he is needed.
