Passage 1
What will the world of tomorrow be like? Many people believe that technology is going to solve some problems we have today. New technology may solve old problems, but it may also create new ones. No technology is perfect. Each has advantages and disadvantages. Here are three examples.
First, self-driving cars. They could reduce accidents caused by human error. However, if all cars are self-driving, there might be new problems like system failures or hacking.
Second, virtual reality (VR) classrooms. Students could visit ancient Rome or the bottom of the ocean without leaving their desks. But the cost of VR equipment is high, and some students may feel dizzy after using it for a long time.
Finally, smart homes. They allow people to control lights, temperature and security with their voice. They might help old people live independently. However, there are worries about privacy and data safety.
It is easy to imagine a future. Although there are some problems to solve, we can certainly dream of a world where technology makes life easier and safer.

Passage 3
Do you often visit museums on holidays? In science museums, you usually see animal specimens (标本) lying silently. Now they are not quiet anymore. Thanks to AI, visitors to a museum in England can talk to them now.
The museum works with an AI company so that it is possible for people and the natural world to communicate with each other. It brings thirteen of its specimens back to life.
Visitors only need to use their smartphones to scan the QR codes (二维码) next to the specimens to begin talking with them—either by text or voice. The animals will reply as if they’re still alive.
This is a new way for people to learn about animals. The museum wants to see how this can help people connect with nature better.
“This is just a try using AI technology in natural science. Will it help people know more about specimen animals? Will it influence (影响) people’s opinions about them? For example, will people like the mouse better after hearing its voice? We are not sure.” said Jack Ashby, a worker of the museum.
And you don’t have to speak English, by the way—the animals are multilingual. So no matter what languages you speak, the animals can talk to you in a way that’s easy for you to understand.
The project engineers hope to make people care more about the biodiversity crisis (生物多样性危机). According to the most recent research, wildlife populations dropped by 69% between 1970 and 2018. And animals are dying out at a faster speed.
Let’s hope the new technology will be both fun and helpful.

Passage 5
A new invention now allows blind people to “see” through touch. Using a special smart glove and a smartphone, blind people can identify objects around them.
The glove was developed by a team of engineers after they saw a blind man struggling to cross the street. The man used a white cane, but still had difficulty knowing what was ahead. This reminded the team that they should do something to help.
The glove has cameras and sensors. It first takes pictures of objects and sends them to a connected smartphone. The phone then uses AI to identify the objects and sends vibration signals to different fingers of the glove. Each finger stands for a different type of object: one for people, one for cars, one for obstacles, etc.
The company first tested the glove in Shanghai. It was chosen because of its large population and busy streets. However, when the product goes global, it can change the lives of millions of blind people.
