Her father used to be a general who was too old and weak to fight, but not too old to teach her how to ride a horse and use a sword. Girls usually did not learn these skills at that time. But Mulan’s father believed everyone should know how to fight, even girls. And Mulan also believed that girls could be as brave as men. One day, the emperor (皇帝) sent soldiers to Mulan’s village. Because war was coming, men were needed for the army. The military leader of the soldiers put up a list of names in the village square. Each name represented one man from each family. Mulan saw her father’s name on the list. She knew her father couldn’t fight in a war. Mulan’s brother was a little child. There was only Mulan who could take her father’s place. But the army did not take girls as replacements for fighting men. Quietly, the next morning, before her father could report for duty, Mulan stole her father’s armor (盔甲). She dressed herself up as a man. The soldiers accepted “him” in her father’s place. Mulan was very careful and fought as bravely as other soldiers over the years. No one found that she was a girl. When the war was over, Mulan received a special award from the emperor for her courage. The emperor gave her a horse and a bag of treasure. Her family greeted her with joy. Her brother was pleased with the gift of her military clothes. Mulan dressed once again in the clothes of a woman. That evening, Mulan and her family got together to watch the sunset. Two of the men who had worked with Mulan in the war stopped by her home on their way home. When Mulan greeted them, they could not believe their eyes. Many people were dying to know the secrets to his fantastic achievements. To work out the mystery, a reporter interviewed him asking why he was able to be so much more creative than most people. David said that it all came from an experience with his mother that happened when he was about four years old. He tried to remove a bottle of milk from the fridge and it fell, spilling the milk all over the kitchen floor-a real sea of milk! Instead of shouting at him, giving him a lecture or punishing him, his mother said, “David, what a great and wonderful mess you have made! Well, the damage has already been done. Would you like to get down and play in the milk for a few minutes before we clean it up?” Indeed, he did. After a few minutes, his mother said, “You know, David, whenever you make a mess like this, in the end you have to clean it up and restore all the things to their correct order. Now, which do you prefer to use, a sponge, a towel, or a mop?” He chose the sponge and together they cleaned up the floor. His mother then said, “You have a failed experiment in how to successfully carry a big milk bottle with two tiny hands. Let’s go out in the back yard and fill the bottle with water and see if you can discover a way to carry it without dropping it.” The little boy then learned that if he held the bottle at the top near the lip with both hands, he could carry it without dropping it. This famous scientist said he had learnt a lot from that little accident. It was at that moment that he knew mistakes were not something bad at all. Instead, he learned that mistakes were just chances for learning something new, which is, what scientific experiments are all about. Even if the experiment doesn’t work, we still can learn something valuable from it. 29. What is NOT true about David? ________ A. He is a well-known scientist in medicine. B. He is considered to be unusually creative. C. He keeps his fantastic achievements as secrets. D. Many people wonder how he got his success. 30. All tomatoes are green before they turn into their true color. That’s when people can eat them. Tomatoes first grew in the Americas. The Incas grew them over 1,000 years ago. The Spanish introduced them to Europe in the early 16th century. The Spanish and Italians seem to have been the first Europeans to accept them as food. In France, people grew tomatoes in the garden just to enjoy their beauty. Many people there thought tomatoes would make them sick. It was years before some of them would eat tomatoes. Tomatoes are fruit. They grow from seeds. They won’t grow in cold weather. But with water, sunlight and warmth, tomatoes grow fast. They can grow in pots or in the ground. As the plant grows taller, people may tie it to a stick. Next is the blooming stage. Flowers appear. The flowers turn into fruit. Some kinds of tomatoes can be picked in about six more weeks. Some tomatoes are large. One kind of tomato can weigh as much as two pounds. You can eat raw tomatoes. First, wash them. Then, cut them up for salads or sandwiches. Tomatoes can be cooked, too. They can be grilled, boiled, or even fried. Do you use ketchup? It is made from tomatoes. Tomatoes don’t have a smell. But they taste great in foods around the world. However, it doesn’t hold people back from picking up a book. Recently, 2000 Chinese homeowners aged between 18 and 55 have been interviewed about reading. The findings of the survey show links between study rooms, the size of a house and the level of development of different Chinese cities, as well as interviewees’ reading habits and preferred reading spaces. Small cities, big reading spaces While people of first-tier cities (一线城市) have plenty to be proud of, a large study room for reading is not one of them. Almost 90% of homeowners in first-tier cities reported not having a study room in the house, and the average (平均的) study area per person is only 0.26 square meters. That size of study room remained under the one-square-meter mark in second, third and fourth-tier cities. While in fifth-tier cities, like Zhangjiajie in the central province of Hunan, the number reached an average of 1.01 square meters per person. In such cities, the possibility of having a study room is three times higher than that in first-tier cities. The survey also found the bigger the house, the more chances its design will include a study room. No study room, no problem But just because most Chinese apartments lack (缺乏) a place for reading doesn’t mean that people aren’t exercising their eyes and minds. The survey found that the interviewees spent between 500 yuan and 800 yuan on books every year. Book-lovers are also enjoying their hobby anywhere in the house, as well as outside. Data shows that 63.6% of readers read on their way to work, 39.5% make use of their time on the toilet to catch up with their favorite book and 35.4% flip through a novel or a magazine before going to bed. And while the majority (82.5%) still prefers to read in study rooms, many are looking outside the front door for places to enjoy the pleasure of reading, with 41.8% choosing cafes and 33.3% choosing bookstores. 37. What does the survey show? ________. A. People in China become less interested in reading. B. Not having a study room doesn’t stop readers from reading. C. People aged between 18 and 55 read more than the others. D. Not having enough reading areas remains a problem in small cities. 38. C. People in first-tier cities are proud of their study rooms. D. People in first-tier cities are less likely to have study rooms at home. 39. According to the article, which way of reading would most people prefer? ________ A. Reading at a bookshop. B. Reading in study rooms. C. Reading before going to bed D. 38.
