A new set of words was added to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) in its September 2024 update. The OED has 500,000 words and phrases and their meanings. It updates its list four times a year.
This time, more than 600 new words were added, including some Welsh words as well as Caribbean-English, East African-English and New Zealand-English words. These words were added because people have been using them in many different English writings for a long time.
Some of the Welsh words added included “iechyd da” (good health) and “ych a fi” (a strong feeling of dislike). There were also food-related words like “sglods” (chips) and “cawl” (a traditional Welsh soup made with meat and vegetables). The name of the Welsh Parliament(议会), “Senedd”, was also included.
From Guyana, a South American country that speaks English, some Caribbean-English words were added, like “butter flap” (a soft, sweet buttery white bread) and “salara” (a spiced coconut filling bread). The phrase “hard ears” which describes a child who is unwilling to listen was also added. From Uganda in East Africa, the word “rolex” was included, which is a shortened form of “rolled eggs”.
New Zealand-English words added included “chilly bin” (a container to keep food and drinks cool) and “kapa haka” (a Maori performing arts group that also describes Maori dancing, singing and chanting).
The OED wanted to show the diversity(多样性) of English spoken around the world and added these words to help achieve that goal.
28. What do the new words added to the OED have in common?
A. They are all about food.

A. The change in English worldwide.
B. The importance of updating English words.
C. The history of the Oxford English Dictionary.
D. The recent update of the Oxford English Dictionary.

The toothbrush is a common thing that most people use every day, but how much do you really know about this seemingly simple tool? Believe it or not, the toothbrush has a very long and interesting history.
The first toothbrushes were actually small twigs(嫩枝) that people would chew(咀嚼) on one end to soften the bristles(短而硬的纤维). These bristles were then used to clean their teeth.
The first “modern” toothbrushes were made in China around 1498. These toothbrushes were made of pig hair and were much more comfortable to use than the twigs. In 1780, William Addis of England came up with the idea of making small holes in a bone(骨头) and putting bristles into the holes. He then glued the bone to a handle(柄). This design worked much better than the twigs and pig hair brushes and quickly became very popular. In 1845, the first toothbrush that was produced in large numbers was created by H.N. Wadsworth. His toothbrush was made of bone and bristles and was very similar to William Addis’ design. The first nylon toothbrush was created in 1938 by DuPont. Nylon bristles were much more effective at cleaning teeth than natural bristles and quickly became the standard.
Today, toothbrushes come in all shapes and sizes and are made from all kinds of materials. You can even buy electric toothbrushes that do all the work for you!
Who would have thought that such a simple tool could have such an interesting history? The next time you reach for your toothbrush, take a moment to think about all the people who have used a toothbrush before you and all the people who will use one after you.
32. What did people usually do with the twigs before brushing their teeth with them?
A. They chewed on them. B. They cut them into two pieces.
C. They glued them to a handle. D. They made small holes on them.
33. Who invented the first toothbrush that was produced in large amounts ?
A. William Addis B. H.N. Wadsworth C. DuPont D. Anthony Wood
34. What is the right order of the following events?
① The nylon toothbrush came out.
② Pig hair was used to make toothbrushes.
③ Electric toothbrushes appeared in people’s life.
④ Toothbrushes with handles became popular in people’s life.
A. ①②④③ B. ①④②③ C. ②④①③ D. ④①②③
35. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The importance of the toothbrush B. Suggestions on using the toothbrush
C. Different opinions about the toothbrush D. The interesting history of the toothbrush

第四部分 任务型阅读(共两节,满分20分)
第一节(每小题1分,共10分)
There came a new neighbor, a middle-aged man. He always looked serious, and a scar on his cheek made him seem scary. Because of his rough appearance and quiet manner, I, like many others in the neighborhood, thought he was cold and unfriendly. People often whispered that he was difficult to get along with. I also kept my distance from him and tried not to talk to him.
One rainy afternoon, however, an unexpected event changed my view. My cat, Mimi, climbed up a tall tree and got trapped. She was too scared to come down. To make things worse, my parents were not at home. I stood under the tree, filled with anxiety and helplessness.
Just then, the man appeared. “Don’ t worry,” he said softly. To my surprise, he took out a small bag of cat treats and began calling Mimi gently. He moved slowly, careful not to frighten her. Within a few minutes, Mimi jumped down into his arms. At that moment I thought he was actually kind and helpful. I expressed my thanks to him.
After that time, I started paying visits to him from time to time. I helped him carry heavy boxes or fix things around his house. In return, he shared stories about his younger days. Through these conversations, I found he was often lonely, as he missed his sons who worked far away. Slowly, we became good friends. My previous wrong judgment of him was a complete misunderstanding.
This experience taught me a valuable lesson. We should never judge a person by their appearance or by what others say. True character is often hidden beneath the surface. Taking time to understand others not only builds a meaningful bond but also enriches our own lives.
