Our planet has many wonderful places, and one of them is Vinicunca in Peru (秘鲁的彩虹山). People call it the Rainbow Mountain. It is famous for its bright red, yellow, green and purple lines. It is part of the Andes Mountains (安第斯山脉), the longest mountain chain (山脉) on earth. It is 5,200 metres high, higher than many other famous mountains. The Andes grow about 1 cm higher every year. Visitors say the Rainbow Mountain looks like a magical world.
The colourful lines come from different rocks. For example, iron (铁) in rocks turns red when it meets air, and sulfur (硫磺) makes the bright yellow lines. After thousands of years, wind and rain washed away dirt and ice, so these colours can be seen. Its colours look bright on sunny days and softer on cloudy days.
Before 2015, the Rainbow Mountain was under ice. Warm weather made the ice turn into water, so people could see its colours clearly. Lots of tourists come here every year. But too many visitors can harm the mountain. Local villagers control visitor numbers and ask people to take rubbish home to protect it.
The Rainbow Mountain tells us natural wonders are beautiful but easy to get hurt. Protecting these places helps nearby plants, animals and people. Small good actions can keep this colourful mountain safe for the future.
24. What can we know about the Rainbow Mountain?
A. It has three bright colourful lines.
B. It is the highest mountain chain on earth.
C. It is part of the Andes and over 5,000 metres high.

C. Farmers put special things on the mountain.
26. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refer to (指的是)?
A. The ice. B. Warmer weather. C. The Rainbow Mountain.
27. What’s the writer’s purpose of writing the passage?
A. To introduce a natural place and call for its protection.
B. To describe the reasons for rock colours in nature.
C. To encourage people to visit the Rainbow Mountain.

Chen Yanzi, a young teacher, has spent almost all her time at a primary school in a village in Hunan Province in the past three years.
She spent three hours getting to the village. This was her first time going from her hometown Huashi to the countryside. Before leaving for the village, she was a little nervous because she knew nothing about it.
“I had never been there and I didn’t know what it was like. I didn’t know what my students would be like,” she said. “However, when I walked into the classroom for the first time and saw the Chinese words ‘Welcome, Miss Chen’ written by students, I felt quite warm.”
She started with six students, all in different grades. She taught math and English, as well as music, art and physical education. She tried to understand the needs of each student.

She also told them interesting stories about what was happening outside the village to help them learn about the country and the wider world.

My name is Li Hao. I’m from China. Last year, I had the chance to study in Canada for six months. It was my first time visiting a Western country, and I learned many valuable lessons about cultural differences.
Before I left, my mother gave me some advice: “Always be polite and respect others, even if things seem strange to you.” I kept her words in my heart.
When I arrived in Toronto, everything felt so strange. The weather was much colder than in China. People dressed differently and spoke English so fast. At first, I felt lonely and missed my family terribly.
The biggest challenge was the food. In China, we usually eat with chopsticks. Using a knife and fork was very difficult for me. I made a mess several times and felt in low spirits. But my host family was very patient. They encouraged me and even taught me how to use them properly.
Another interesting thing was politeness. In Canada, people often say “sorry” and “thank you” many times a day. They also hold doors open for strangers. In China, we are also polite, but in different ways. I learned that different cultures have different ways of showing respect.
By the end of my stay, I felt much more comfortable. I made good friends and even learned to love poutine, a Canadian dish! This experience taught me that although we come from different countries, we share the same human feelings. I hope to visit more countries in the future.

People like to meet in the evening and watch the moon. The Mid-Autumn Festival is important because it is a special occasion for the Chinese to get together with their families. But too many visitors can harm the mountain. Local villagers control visitor numbers and ask people to take rubbish home to protect it.
