Summary
Identifying the main idea and details
The main idea of a text tells us what the text is about, and details further explain the main idea.
Exercise
Read the text and complete the following chart.
People with hearing problems can use sign language for communication. They spell out the letters one by one by using their fingers. This is called “fingerspelling”. They also use different expressions on their faces to say “hello”, “goodbye”, “please”, “thank you”, “yes”, “no”, and so on. The expressions on the face and body language are important in sign language. There are many different sign languages in the world because of cultural differences.

Summary
Making inferences
You can infer the meaning of a new word from the text clues around it. And prefixes and suffixes are also good clues to infer the meaning of a word.
Read the text. Circle the text clue for each word in the table and explain its meaning by using another word or phrase from the text.
Do you know that if you imitate how someone talks, you’ll understand what they say better? Imitating is a very useful skill. It can help you better comprehend the speech. To learn a new language, it’s best to copy the native speakers. And if you want to learn the language faster, don’t just copy how your partner talks. Try to use this imitation method and copy his body language as well. In this way, you’ll sound like a native very soon.
