①Do you know E-person and I-person? These two kinds of personalities are much discussed online. Even twins may be quite different from each other, such as personalities, hobbies, friends etc. To learn more about that, Let’s hear from the following twins.
②Andy, an Extrovert: I enjoy trying new things and playing with many friends. Ken and I head to the beach on Saturdays to surf, and on Sundays, I hang out with Tom, eating and riding. At school, Larry is my best friend. I don’t spend much time with him over the weekends because he likes to play video games at home just by himself. I’m cool with it because I can visit other friends. I value (重视) his friendship a lot because Larry cares about me and often gives great advice on my problems.
③Anna, an Introvert: I think nothing is more enjoyable than staying on the sofa by myself with a great book in hand. However, I do also need time with my two best friends, Sue and Tina. Sue is so full of life that her jokes bring much joy to my quiet days. Tina is more like me, and she understands me better than I do. We often take a long walk to share our feelings. I love both my friends and need their different personalities to make my life colorful.
④Well, there we have it from the horse’s mouth. From Andy and Anna, introverts and extroverts can be friends and also need friends with different personalities. So start to make different friends and enjoy the special friendship!
4. What does Andy do on Saturdays with Ken?

I used to teach English as a volunteer in Africa. Some of my friends asked me, “Don’t you miss your home, Emily?” I told them I was the only child in my family and I truly had an easy life at home. However, I got bored of having a “good” time at home and needed a change.
The kids from Africa were eager (渴望的) to learn and easy to teach. I was surprised at how smart they were. Talking with them made me think a lot. When you come from a poor area, you must grow up fast and deal with all kinds of difficult situations.
Volunteering has always been easy for me because I don’t like to do the same things every day. My job also gives me the freedom (自由) to choose when and where I work. Although I don’t get paid for volunteering, I’m old enough to know that money is not the only way to get rewarded (回报). The experience itself is priceless. When I volunteer, I often work with people who are worse off than I am. That has taught me to practice thankfulness for what I have. Believe me, this life lesson is worth thousands of dollars.
I am not a perfect person. In a sense, I think I’m selfish (自私的). But you don’t have to be a perfect, selfless person to volunteer. In fact, I have got a lot from volunteering. Volunteering helps others, and it can also help yourself, too. The biggest benefit of volunteering is that it helps you develop your character, and that’s the passport to a rich and meaningful life.
8. Why did Emily volunteer in Africa?
A. She lived a really difficult life at home. B. She hoped to learn a new language there.
C. She wanted to experience something new. D. She planned to visit the whole Africa.
9. How were the African kids in Emily’s eyes in Paragraph 2?
A. They really wanted to learn. B. They were hard to teach.
C. They had no interest in learning. D. They hated learning.
10. What does Emily get from her volunteering experience according to the text?
A. She got a passport. B. She developed her character.
C. She could teach children. D. She got thousands of dollars.
11. Which of the following would Emily most probably agree with?
A. Love me, love my dog. B. Old habits die hard.
C. Giving is receiving. D. East, west, home is the best.
D
Do you often visit museums on holidays? In science museums, you usually see animal specimens (标本) lying silently. Now they are not quiet anymore. Thanks to AI, visitors to a museum in England can talk to them now.
The museum works with an AI company so that it is possible for people and the natural world to communicate with each other. It brings thirteen of its specimens back to life.
Visitors only need to use their smartphones to scan the QR codes (二维码) next to the specimens to begin talking with them—either by text or voice. The animals will reply as if they’re still alive.
This is a new way for people to learn about animals. The museum wants to see how this can help people connect with nature better.
“This is just a try using AI technology in natural science. Will it help people know more about specimen animals? Will it influence (影响) people’s opinions about them? For example, will people like the mouse better after hearing its voice? We are not sure.” said Jack Ashby, a worker of the museum.
And you don’t have to speak English, by the way—the animals are multilingual. So no matter what languages you speak, the animals can talk to you in a way that’s easy for you to understand.
The project engineers hope to make people care more about the biodiversity crisis (生物多样性危机). According to the most recent research, wildlife populations dropped by 69% between 1970 and 2018. And animals are dying out at a faster speed.
Let’s hope the new technology will be both fun and helpful.
12. What does AI do in the science museum?
A. It helps the animals to live longer. B. It helps the museum to make more money.
C. It helps visitors to talk with the specimens. D. It helps the scientists to make specimens.
13. How does Jack Ashby express his opinion in paragraph 5?
A. By listing numbers. B. By comparing facts.
C. By explaining reasons. D. By asking questions.
14. What does the underlined sentence “the animals are multilingual” mean in paragraph 6?
A. The animals can’t speak any languages. B. The animals can speak only one language.
C. The animals can speak two languages. D. The animals can speak different languages.
15. Why does the museum work with the AI company?
A. Because the museum hopes to make the number of animals increase.
B. Because the museum wishes visitors to learn more about animals.
C. Because the museum would like to help visitors communicate with each other.
D. Because the museum wants to teach visitors how to use smartphones in the museum.
