Reading is like exercise for the mind. It helps us think or escape into new worlds. Today, we asked the Happiful Team to introduce a book of their favourites. We hope our efforts will inspire you to take a break from screens, relax on the sofa with a cup of tea, and enjoy a good book.
Jo Ferguson, Head of Membership:
I would probably choose Prisoners of Geography by Tim Marshall. It’s a highly accessible and interesting read that examines how geography has influenced — and continues to significantly influence — politics across the world.
Bonnie Evie Gifford, Creative Writer and Producer:
I recommend Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. If you’ve ever had that awkward, nerdy (书呆子气的) university experience where you just couldn’t fit in, where you disagreed with a professor, or found yourself being taken advantage of by your mates, Fangirl will totally speak to you.
Kat Wheeler, Editorial Assistant:
There are so many books that I love and that have changed my life in all kinds of ways. But I think Animal Farm by George Orwell is a must, mainly because it’s so accessible but so important. It tells a fable story in which the animals overthrow the farmer and establish a perfect homeland, but fall into degeneration (堕落) at last.
Kate Nicholls, Content Producer:
The latest book to blow me away has to be Eat up by Ruby Tandoh. Food and eating play such an important role in our lives and affects so many things, from body image to class. Putting together facts and statistics (数据) with personal articles and several recipes (食谱), I’m really fond of Ruby’s writing style and always want more.
1. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To sell books. B. To recommend books.
C. To teach how to choose books. D. To introduce a book-loving team.
2. Which book focuses on self-discovery and finding personal identity?
A. Prisoners of Geography. B. Fangirl.
C. Animal Farm. D. Eat up.
3. Why does Kat Nicholls like Eat Up?
A. It focuses on traditional recipes. B. It plays an important role in her life.
C. It talks about body image issues. D. It is interesting in content and style.

I took a deep breath and walked through the front door, my arms full of groceries. A challenge lay ahead of me, someone who could hardly boil water: cooking the Easter Sunday dinner. What if I made everyone sick? It could truly be our family’s last super meal.
Making the holiday meal was my brother’s job, not mine. I could never fill his shoes. Peter had died in September at the age of 45 from a heart attack, but he’d been a natural in the kitchen all his life. He planned every course in detail, from the crescent rolls to the Dutch apple pie.
My family was lost without him, and we went out to dinner for Thanksgiving and ordered pizza for Christmas. By the time Easter rolled around, though, I couldn’t bear the idea of another holiday surrounded by takeout (外卖食品) boxes. Peter would have hated that. To him, there was nothing more important than a meal made with love. So I convinced Mom that we should cook Easter dinner together. But we were terrible cooks.
I had been thinking what to cook for Easter dinner. I’d bitten off more than I could chew. No one could do this half as well as Peter.
I stepped into the family room. Mom was still at church, but her newspaper was opened on the coffee table, to the sports section, as usual. She was a huge Notre Dame women’s basketball fan, and the featured story was about the forward Devereaux Peters. I read the headline and nearly dropped my grocery bags, Filling Peters’ Shoes.
That afternoon, cooking in the kitchen, I didn’t feel so alone. Mom and I pulled together and the Easter feast was not that bad. The ham may have been a little dry, but it was all made with love— just like Peter would have wanted.
4. What would Peter have preferred to do if holidays had come?
A. To go out to have dinner. B. To order pizza.
C. To show off his cooking skills. D. To cook a big dinner for his family.
5. The text tells us that ____________.
A. the Easter dinner was the family’s last dinner
B. Mom persuaded the author to cook the Easter dinner
C. Peter enjoyed cooking a dinner with love
D. their Easter dinner this year was a complete failure
6. By saying “I’d bitten off more than I could chew.” in Paragraph 4, the author means __________.
A. she wasn’t confident in cooking the Easter dinner
B. she was not able to eat a lot of food
C. the Easter dinner made her sick
D. she couldn’t cook the dinner alone
7. What might be the best title for the text ?
A. Cooking in the Kitchen B. Filling Peter’s Shoes
C. Happy Easter Day D. Terrible Cooks
C
A quiet AI revolution is unfolding in China’s countryside. In provinces like Jilin, Yunnan and Hubei, farmers are turning to AI to save their crops from flooding and disease. China is showing the world a different roadmap of AI’s path forward.
Free AI services in China fuel mass adoption. DeepSeek’s integration into WeChat caused a traffic surge, absorbed by Tencent’s Yuanbao, whose DAU (Daily Active Users) jumped 20 times in two months. AI now rapidly integrates into daily life, reaching vast rural populations at scale.
By making AI tools free and accessible through platforms like WeChat, China has opened the floodgates to grassroots adoption. Chinese companies have prioritized scale. And that scale is surprising: Nearly 300 million farmers, representing 20% of the national population, are potential AI users.
In one Hubei village, weeks of heavy rain threatened to destroy rice fields. Consequently, farmers turned to Yuanbao. The chatbot recommended building embankments and switching to high-ridge planting — the advice arrives instantly, tailored to specific problems and images uploaded by farmers with little formal education.
AI is inserted into everyday life in China. For Chinese farmers, the benefits are real and immediate. For many, AI is no longer a futuristic idea but a daily tool. While China’s rural AI surge is impressive, it faces challenges of its own. AI researchers found that most farmers didn’t know how to pose useful questions to AI chatbots unless prompted by local officials. Educational gaps remain a barrier: Even when farmers receive answers, they might not understand the technical terms involved. Without a closed loop of comprehension and action, the benefits of AI can’t be fully realized.
Researchers also stress that making AI useful for the farmers as well as elders will require more than a stylish UX and bigger models. It urgently demands simplified responses, voice interfaces and solutions tailored to real-world conditions.
8. What resulted from DeepSeek’s integration into WeChat?
A. Free AI services in China became available.
B. Tencent’s Yuanbao saw a rapid increase in users.
C. Farmers in Hubei doubled their rice production.
D. The number of WeChat users dropped significantly.
9. What do the underlined words “opened the floodgates to” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Blocked the way of. B. Tested the limits of.
C. Increased the cost of. D. Allowed widespread entry of.
10. What will the researchers most probably do next?
A. Develop larger AI models. B. Expand AI access to more cities.
C. Provide simplified practical instructions. D. Teach farmers to understand technical terms.
11. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. AI companies profit greatly from rural users.
B. AI has solved all farming problems in China.
C. Farmers prefer traditional methods to AI technology.
D. China’s rural AI holds promise but faces challenges.
D
Carmakers have made great advances in safety over the last 20 years. At the forefront of these advances are digital technologies that can keep a car in its lane (车道), stop to avoid a crash by itself, and even call for help in an emergency. But unfortunately, these carmakers are going too far concerning the rising dependence on touch screens inside cars.
In the beginning, touch screens were a practical way to put satellite, GPS-guided directions, and other useful entertainment functions together into cars while the main controls (控制装置) for driving were left largely unchanged. But designers couldn’t just leave them alone. Now, touch screens, which require a hand and concentration to use, have taken over many functions, even basic driving tasks like turning on headlights and checking the car’s speed, stealing drivers’ attention.
Distracted (分心的) driving has become a big problem. According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, accidents caused by distracted driving in 2022 led to 3,308 traffic deaths. Thousands more drivers have their cars damaged or destroyed by those who just can’t keep their eyes off their screens. Besides, the overdependence on touch screens presents a usability issue, too. If any part of a driver’s hand accidentally touches the screen, it’s likely to activate some feature, and not necessarily the wanted one.
Quickly disappearing are the days when physical buttons enable drivers to turn down the radio or turn on the headlights simply by feel, without taking their eyes off the road. Instead, they must divide their attention between the road and the screen, which is dangerous.
I’m not opposed to technological upgrades in general. But when I have to focus on what’s inside the car instead of on what’s happening in front of it, it’s gone too far. So give me back my physical buttons that I can control only by feel, and let me keep my eyes on the road where they belong.
12. What’s the first paragraph mainly about?
A. Complaints from some carmakers.
B. Celebration of technological advances.
C. Importance of digital technologies in cars.
D. A concerning problem with an in-car technology.
13. What does the underlined word “them” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Driving tasks. B. Basic driving tasks.
C. Main controls for driving. D. Useful entertainment functions.
14. What is included in paragraph 3?
A. Rules. B. Effects. C. Solutions. D. Reasons.
15. What’s the writer’s attitude toward in-car touch screen technology?
A. Negative. B. Positive. C. Satisfied. D. Unconcerned.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
At the table sat my four-year-old son Matthew, legs swinging in the air and chin in hand. I stared aimlessly out of the window, trying to ignore the ache in my belly (腹部). “Mama, can you play with me?” “Not today, honey,” I shook my head. Still recovering from an operation, I could barely get out of bed these days. I hoped for strength and happiness. But the future seemed so hopeless.
All of a sudden, Matthew jumped up from his spot on the kitchen floor. “Bird!” he shouted, rushing to our courtyard. Sure enough, there was a white dove seated in a rubber tree. It sat there for a few moments, and then flew away. Strange, I’d never seen one in our neighborhood before.
When I dragged myself to the kitchen the next morning, the dove was back, this time with a mate carrying twigs (树枝). “Look, Matthew,” I said, pointing to the tree. “They’re going to make a nest (巢).” The doves flew in and out of the courtyard all week, building on top of the rubber tree.
Matthew could hardly contain his excitement. Every morning, he’d run into the kitchen and take his spot by the sliding glass door, talking to the birds while they worked. His enthusiasm was influential. As much as I was grieving, I couldn’t help but look forward to the doves’ visits as well.
Then it all went wrong. The courtyard was a spot safe enough for a nest, but the rubber tree’s broad, thin leaves were far from stable. One night, a strong wind blew, throwing the doves’ nest to the ground. I heard the twigs break apart.
I surveyed the damage. Nothing good ever lasts. I wouldn’t blame the doves if they never came back. But they returned. And they paid no attention to the pile of sticks that had once been their nest. They started again from scratch. Again, though, the wind destroyed all their hard work. The next day, and the next, they renewed their efforts, as if nothing had happened.
Paragraph 1: I knew I had to do something.
Paragraph 2: “It works! The birds are back!” Matthew announced.

1.续写词数应为150左右;

【47题答案】
【答案】例文
I knew I had to do something. The doves’ unyielding spirit had been a beacon in my dark days—they kept trying, no matter how many times the wind tore down their nest. I couldn’t stand by and watch them struggle anymore. So I got up early the next morning, fetched a thick wooden board from the shed, and hammered it firmly onto the rubber tree’s trunk, just above the unstable leaves. Matthew helped me cover it with soft moss and dry grass, making it warm and safe. We then stood by the sliding door, holding our breath as we waited for the doves to arrive.
“It works! The birds are back!” Matthew announced. There they were, perched on the new board, their beaks full of twigs. They hopped around, inspecting the spot, and soon began building their nest again — this time, on a foundation that wouldn’t be blown away. Three weeks later, we were thrilled to see three fluffy chicks pecking their way out of their eggs.
