It tells us the story of Wang Lifa and his customers. The play presents the teahouse as the heart of community life while bidding farewell to traditional Beijing culture. The three-act story spans crucial periods of modern Chinese history: beginning in 1898 during the Qing Dynasty, continuing through 1916, and concluding in 1945 at the end of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. Tragically, Wang Lifa loses his teahouse after the war and dies, symbolizing the end of an era. Born in Beijing in 1899, Lao She received teacher training before teaching Chinese in London from 1924 to 1929. Recognized as “A People’s Artist” and “A Great Master of Language,” he became one of China’s most celebrated 20th century writers, known for his plays, novels and short stories. Today, Lao She’s Teahouse continues this cultural legacy. Visitors can enjoy traditional tea service and authentic Chinese cuisine while experiencing Beijing Opera, folk music, acrobatics and magic shows. C There is a place named Shark Bay (鲨鱼湾) in Western Australia. At least 28 kinds of sharks are swimming through the clear water there, making it one of the largest shark homes in the world. Tiger sharks are especially common visitors to Shark Bay. They move their 15-foot-long (4.5 metres) bodies through the seagrass, sometimes catching huge sea cows for a meal. Although tiger sharks are dangerous to sea cows, they are important to the health of the ocean ecosystem. In fact, they can also be our powerful friends in stopping climate change. It all comes back to the seagrass that moves with the waves in Shark Bay. The seagrass is food for the sea cows. Each eats about 40 kilograms of seagrass a day. By controlling the sea cow populations, tiger sharks in Shark Bay help the seagrass beds grow. A good seagrass bed stores twice as much CO2 per square mile as forests do on land. But in the world, tiger shark populations are becoming smaller, including some populations in Australia. Off Australia’s northeast coast of Queensland, it is said that tiger sharks have fallen by at least 71%, largely because of overfishing and bycatch (误捕). A reduction in tiger sharks means more seagrass eaten and less CO2 kept in the ocean. In Shark Bay, the tiger sharks are able to achieve the balance by keeping sea cow populations down, and not all the bay’s seagrass is lost. But here comes the question: What if sharks disappeared from the bay? The need to understand how they support their ecosystems becomes even more urgent (紧迫的). 9. What can we learn from Paragraph 1? A. Tiger sharks eat sea cows. B. The tiger shark is the largest of its kind. C. A seagrass bed is about 4.5 metres long. D. Sea cows are harmful to the ocean ecosystem. 10. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about? A. The balance of the ocean ecosystem. B. The role of tiger sharks in protecting seagrass. C. The difference between seagrass-beds and forests. D. The main food of sea cows and how much they eat. 11. What’s the situation of tiger sharks? A. They are overfishing sea cows. B. They are moving out of Australia. C. Their populations are becoming smaller. D. Their living conditions are becoming worse. 12. What’s the writer’s purpose in writing the text? A. To give some information about tiger sharks. B. To tell us what the ocean will be like in the future. C. To show the relationship between the three living things. D. To call on humans to take action to protect tiger sharks. D Many of you have heard a Cinderella (灰姑娘) story, but you may not know that there are over a hundred different ways to tell the Cinderella story. When writers tell the same story in a different way, it is called their “version” of the story. The story of Cinderella has many different versions. Let’s read two of them and find out how they are different. The version that most people know is the oldest one written in 1697 by Charles Perrault from France. This is the version where the birds help make Cinderella’s dress and the mice turn into carriage men and help Cinderella go to the dance in a pumpkin carriage. In this version, many of the animals are Cinderella’s friends. They help her meet the Prince. Cinderella marries the Prince and they live happily together ever after. In another version of this story written in 1812 by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm from Germany, the birds help Cinderella in the whole story. Cinderella’s father gives her a little tree when he comes back from a party. She plants the little tree and her tears water it until it grows into a tall tree. The birds now live in the tree and they give Cinderella a dress of gold and shoes of gold. Cinderella goes to the party to meet and dance with the Prince. Later, the Prince finds Cinderella at home doing work for her stepmother. Cinderella marries the Prince and they live happily ever after. Now you can understand what the word “version” means and how more than one writer can tell a story in a different way. That is why there are many versions of the same story. 13. The oldest version of the Cinderella story was written by a writer from ________. A. France B. Germany C. America D. England 14. The meaning of the underlined word “version” in the first paragraph is probably “________”. A. character B. ways C. people D. edition 15. When Cinderella’s father comes back from a party, he gives her________ in the version written in 1812. A. a pumpkin carriage B. a little tree C. a dress of gold D. a pair of shoes of gold 16. In the two versions of the Cinderella story, what do they have in common? A. Cinderella’s stepmother is very kind. B. Cinderella marries the Prince and lives happily. C. Cinderella’s father always gives her a lot of money. D. Cinderella doesn’t go to the party in both versions. 第二节: Whether you’ve been invited to a dinner party or you’re going out to eat, having table manners can leave a great impression on others. What do you usually do before exams? Are there any special traditions in your country? In China, we have some interesting traditions for some important exams. We often eat zongzi and the word “zong” sounds like “success” in Chinese, which means getting high scores. Additionally (另外), some students prefer to wear red clothes or socks because the colour red is the symbol of joy and good luck in Chinese culture. In recent years, it has become popular for mothers to wear qipao (a traditional Chinese dress) to wish their children to get victory in the exam, as its name carries the meaning “qi kai de sheng”. Xie Guoliang,15, Jiangsu In South Korea, we give our friends sticky rice (糯米) cakes and candies before exams. This is because the word “stick” sounds like “pass” in Korean. People believe that eating sticky food helps students “stick” to success and pass their tests. I remember when my best friend had a big test, I bought his favourite sticky rice cakes to cheer him up. This tradition makes us feel warm and confident during stressful exam time. Chulkyu Lee, 18, South Korea In the US, we have different habits before exams. Some wear “lucky” clothes, like special socks or underwear (内衣) for good luck. Others do simple things, like doing exercise or eating snacks that they think are lucky. I always use the same special pencil for exams. I feel it helps me do better. These small traditions help me feel calm and focused. Ivana Nicole Moreno,17, US 41. C.
