"Ideally, the system would tell us when to adapt human ac-
tivities that are pushing an ecosystem toward a breakdown
or would even allow us to pull an ecosystem bade from the
borderline.”可知,预警系统是通过发出需要采取预防行

I'm writing to give some suggestions to protect the
wildlife living in and around our city.As we know, many

With the development of cities, water and air are seri-

smaller. They not only have little to eat,but also can be
killed by human beings. These species of wildlife are an im-
portant part of our life.Personally, more measures should
be taken to protect them from being hurt.Firstly, more
laws must be made to stop people from cutting down trees.

After years of heated debate, gray wolves
were reintroduced to Yellowstone National
Park.Fourteen wolves were caught in Canada
and transported to the park.By last year, the
Yellowstone wolf population had grown to
more than 170 wolves.
Gray wolves once were seen here and
there in the Yellowstone area and much of the
continental United States,but they were
gradually displaced by human development.
By the 1920s,wolves had practically disap-
peared from the Yellowstone area. They went
farther north into the deep forests of Canada,
where there were fewer humans around.
The disappearance of the wolves had
many unexpected results.Deer and elk
populations-一major food sources(来源)for
the wolf-grew rapidly.These animals consum-
ed large amounts of vegetation(植被),which
10
reduced plant diversity in the park.In the
absence of wolves,coyote populations also
grew quickly. The coyotes killed a large
percentage of the park's red foxes, and
completely drove away the park's beavers.
As early as 1966,biologists asked the
government to consider reintroducing wolves
to Yellowstone Park. They hoped that wolves
would be able to control the elk and coyote
problems.Many farmers opposed the plan
because they feared that wolves would kill
their farm animals or pets.
The government spent nearly 30 years
coming up with a plan to reintroduce the
wolves.The U.S.Fish and Wildlife Service
carefully monitors and manages the wolf
packs in Yellowstone.Today,the debate
continues over how well the gray wolf is
fitting in at Yellowstone.Elk,deer,and coyote
populations are down, while beavers and red
foxes have made a comeback. The Yellowstone
wolf project has been a valuable experiment to
help biologists decide whether to reintroduce
wolves to other parts of the country as well.

One animal which is still alive, but has
almost disappeared from the world,is the
Chinese river dolphin or baiji.
The baiji is a beautiful animal with a
graceful body and a long nose.It is blue-grey
with a white underside,weighs between 100
and 160 kilogrammes, and can grow up to
eight feet long.It lives in the middle and
lower parts of the Yangtze River. Most
dolphins live in the sea so the baiji is very
unusual. It is one of only five kinds of river
dolphins in the world.
Unt2检测卷。
In the past, the Yangtze River was home
to many thousands of baiji.A book written
during the Han Dynasty,22 centuries ago, tells
of the river being full of the beautiful
creatures.At that time,there were many
stories about the baiji. One story said that the
dolphin was really a beautiful princess who
had drowned in the river.Another said it was
a kind of horse that could gallop(急速行进)
across water.
Sadly, the situation today is very different.
Many millions of people live in the Yangtze
River Basin and the river is busy, noisy and
polluted. The baiji is almost blind and moves
around using sounds. With so many boats and
people using the river, the animals cannot find
their way around. They are unable to find
food,or find each other.Year by year,the
number of baiji in the river becomes smaller
and smaller.
A lot of work is being done to help the
baiji. One section of the river has been made
into a kind of nature park, where the baiji can
be safe.Fishermen work together with
scientists and tell them when they see a baiji,
or if they find an injured one.Injured animals
are taken to a research center and nursed back
to be healthy. However,in spite of these
measures,scientists estimate(估计)that the
number of the baiji still alive in the river may
be less than 100.If things continue as they
are,the lovely creature will disappear in the
next 25 years.

How does an ecosystem(生态系统)
work? What makes the populations of different
species the way they are?Why are there so
many flies and so few wolves? To find an
answer,scientists have built mathematical
models of food webs, noting who eats whom
and how much each one eats.
With such models,scientists have found
out some key principles operating in food
webs.Most food webs,for instance,consist of
many weak links rather than a few strong
ones.When a predator(掠食动物)always
eats huge numbers of a single prey(猎物),
the two species are strongly linked;when a
predator lives on various species, they are
weakly linked.Food webs may be dominated
by many weak links because that arrangement
is more stable over the long term.If a predator
ret
can eat several species,it can survive the
extinction of one of them. And if a predator
can move on to another species that is easier
to find when a prey species becomes rare, the
switch allows the original prey to recover. The
weak links may thus keep species from driving
one another to extinction.
Mathematical models have also revealed
that food webs may be unstable, where small
changes of top predators can lead to big
effects throughout entire ecosystems.In the
1960s,scientists proposed that predators at the
top of a food web had a surprising amount of
control over the size of populations of other
species-including species they did not
directly attack.
And unplanned human activities have
proved the idea of top-down control by top
predators to be true.In the ocean,we fished
for top predators such as cod on an industrial
scale, while on land,we killed off large
predators such as wolves. These actions have
greatly affected the ecological balance.
Scientists have built an early-warning
system based on mathematical models.Ideally,
the system would tell us when to adapt human
activities that are pushing an ecosystem
toward a breakdown or would even allow us
to pull an ecosystem back from the borderline.
Prevention is key, scientists say because once
ecosystems pass their tipping point(临界
点),it is remarkably difficult for them to

Many animals move from one place to
another at certain times of the year.36.
They migrate to find food, seek a partner,
or in search of warmer weather. One of the
most wonderful migrations in nature is that of
the North American monarch butterfly(帝王
蝶).
Every autumn,millions of these beautiful
insects begin a long and difficult journey.
Somehow they manage to travel around 4,000
kilometres south and find their way to
California or Mexico.37.
A team of scientists has now found the
answer. They have found out that the monarch
is able to tell the time of day.38.
These two pieces of information-the time of
day and the point where the sun is in the sky-
allow the butterfly to determine the way to go.
Eventually,it manages to reach the places
where it will spend the winter.
14
The solution to the mystery of the
monarch's amazing ability comes at a time
when it is in serious trouble.39.
Sadly, human activity is the main reason why
the number of monarch butterflies is falling. In
many of the places where the butterfly can be
found,people are destroying the natural
environment. They cut down trees and use
chemicals that kill the plants that monarch
caterpillars eat.
40.
People have been recording
its migration and make sure that there are
enough plants for it to feed on.If this works,
there may come a time when the number of
monarch butterflies increases once again.The
more we know about this lovely creature, the
greater the chance it will survive and keep its
place in the natural world for a long time to
come.
A.They begin to return north in the spring.
B.This annual movement is called migration.
C.It uses its eyes to measure the position of
the sun.
D.However, until recently no one knew how
they did this.
E.The most common type of migration is
seasonal migration.
F.Its population has crashed by as much as
90 per cent in the last few years.
G.The research on the monarch's behavior
has however led to a greater awareness
of this creature.

I took a job as a receptionist for a
veterinarian(兽医)almost five decades ago.
As an enthusiastic animal lover,I accepted the
position on condition that I wouldn't have to
assist with any wounded animals.I couldn't
bear to see any creature in pain.At the end of
my first week,we were closing the office for
the day when a young man ran up to us
holding a severely injured Doberman puppy in
his arms and begging us to save his life. The
four-month-old pup had been hit by a car.
The doctor and I ran back into the
operating room. The only place the skin was
still attached to this poor little animal's body
was around one shoulder. The vet worked

tirelessly for what seemed like hours, stitching
(缝合)him back together again. That was the
easy part. The puppy had broken multiple
bones,including his spine(脊柱).Even if he
survived the next few days,we were quite
sure he would never walk again.
That day forever changed my life. The
veterinarian guided me,and I became his
assistant in all things. One of my first jobs
was to give that Doberman puppy daily
physical care.I remembered moving his tiny
legs to try to keep his muscles from withering
(菱缩).Weeks went by until one day,I felt
this little fighter push back ever so slightly.
And he continued to push back till he could
finally use his legs.He recovered.
A year later,I walked into the clinic's
waiting room and saw a huge Doberman who
had been standing quietly with his owner on
the opposite side of the room.I called the
name of the next client.
