In October, 14-year-old Yash Mehta from the US won the first place in an invention competition and a $3,500 (25,500 yuan) prize. He created his own electronic braille reader
Mehta’s journey began this year when he visited his grandfather in India, who helps run a school for the blind. He found that none of the students had a modern electronic braille reader. Then he learned that most braille readers cost around $3,000, with some costing as much as $15,000.
Mehta, who loves engineering and helping others, decided to make a model that cost less than $50. After solving problems such as coding (编程), the young engineer finally invented a small reader that only cost $35, with 86 percent accuracy (准确率).
Mehta noticed the serious situation for the blind around the world. “There are now 36 million visually impaired people (视障人士) around the world. Also, 89 percent of blind people live in less developed countries, where it is very hard to find braille,” said Mehta.
Having cheaper braille readers is necessary for the education of the blind since their education has been limited (限制) by the high cost of braille readers. “Bringing down the cost of braille readers is very important to making education more possible for everyone,” Mehta said.
For Mehta, cutting the cost of the machine is not enough. He also wants to make the machine more convenient to use, such as by improving its WiFi connectivity. He is now working with schools to improve the reader and hopes to provide 1,000 free readers for blind people in developing countries each year.
37. What inspired Yash Mehta to create the electronic braille reader?
A. His experience as a blind person in the US.
B. His will to win the first place in the competition.
C. His visit to his grandfather’s school for the blind in India.
38. How much did the small braille reader invented by Mehta cost?
A. $35. B. $50. C. $86.
39. According to Mehta, what is a main problem facing visually impaired people worldwide?
A. Most braille readers are too expensive.
B. There are not enough schools for the blind.
C. There are too many visually impaired people.
40. What is one of Mehta’s future goals about his invention?
A. To sell the readers at a low price.
B. To make the readers more convenient to use.
C. To give free readers only to his grandfather’s school.

On the hillside of Xiaobeiliu Village in Xiangxi stands Minzhi Bookstore. Every morning, a man appears on time at the doorstep and waits for children to arrive. He is Xiang Minzhi, 56 years old, born with a foot disability (残疾). As the founder and only librarian of the bookstore, he is warmly called “Bookstore Dad” by children.
Xiang has always loved reading. In 2016, he noticed children in the village had nowhere to go after school. With the help of some organizations and kind-hearted people, Xiang spent all his savings (积蓄) turning the wasteland in front of his house into Minzhi Bookstore. It opened to children for free in February 2017.
The bookstore is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., but Xiang always opens early and never locks up until the last child leaves. “As long as children are in need, the door of the bookstore will always stay open.” He can only move little by little using two small stools (板凳). Even so, he keeps on managing all the books in person.
Xiang also holds different activities. He teaches children how to record their thoughts about what they have read. And every summer, he invites university students to volunteer at the bookstore.
Over the past years, the bookstore has grown from one room to three. Its collection has risen from 5,000 books to 15,000, serving over 10,000 children. “The children’s joy brings me joy, and from them, I find the value of life,” Xiang says with a smile.

A smile shows that someone is happy. There are countless reasons why people smile. Yet as the saying goes, “Laughter is the best medicine.” Smiling is far more than just an expression of happiness. ____41____
Smiling benefits our health.
It helps us lower stress and feel more relaxed. ____42____ When we smile, our bodies work better and we feel more energetic. It also lifts our mood and helps us stay in good health.
Smiling requires less physical effort.
____43____ In fact, it only takes about 17 facial muscles(肌肉) to smile. However, showing unhappiness or displeasure uses about 43 muscles. This makes smiling much more relaxing for our facial muscles. So give your face a break and smile more often—why frown(皱眉) when you can smile?
____44____
Many people try to improve their appearance through exercise or fashionable clothes. However, there is a famous saying: “A smile is the best thing a person can wear”. This is because people are naturally drawn to those who wear a smile. After all, kindness and warmth never go out of style.
Smiling carries great power.
Both smiles and laughter can spread quickly from one person to another, just like wildfire. When someone is feeling down, sharing a smile is one of the kindest things you can do. ____45____

A. Smiling makes us more attractive.
B. There are plenty of other great reasons to smile.
C. It is the simplest and cheapest way to cheer others up.
D. Smiling comes more easily than showing unhappiness.

B“There are plenty of other great reasons to smile.”
E“It can even help to create special chemicals to help us feel less pain.”
D“Smiling comes more easily than showing unhappiness.”
A“Smiling makes us more attractive.”
C“It is the simplest and cheapest way to cheer others up.”

be surprised at固定搭配“对……
