Farah was on her parents’ farm in Malaysia. She heard a funny noise and went to look. She found a baby orangutan (猩猩). It was lonely and scared. Farah went to tell her parents.
“There’s an orangutan sanctuary (庇护地) ten miles from here,” said Dad. “We should call them.”
“Good idea,” said Mom. “I’ll call them now.”
“He looks hungry,” said Dad. “I’ll get him a banana.”
“He needs a name,” said Farah. “I’ll call him Coco.”
A team from the sanctuary arrived quickly.
“Why does Coco have to go to the sanctuary?” asked Farah.
“Orangutans are in danger in their habitat (栖息地) because there are logging sites (伐木点), big farms and illegal (非法的) hunters,” said the sanctuary assistant. “Coco is very young. At the sanctuary, he can grow up safely.”
“What happens at the sanctuary?” asked Farah.
“Well, Coco looks healthy, but tomorrow the vets (兽医) are going to do a check-up and they’re going to give him vaccinations (疫苗). The day after tomorrow, we’re going to send him to the orangutan school at the sanctuary!”
“Orangutan school!” said Farah. “What’s that?”
The sanctuary assistant smiled. “Orangutans usually stay with their mothers for six years. They learn how to live in the jungle. At the sanctuary, they learn from each other. Next week, the team is going to give Coco a buddy — an older orangutan who can teach him. He needs to learn how to find food and where to sleep.”
“Orangutan school sounds fun!” said Farah.

Passage 1
Dear You is a low-budget drama filmed in the Chaoshan dialect. Although it was made with only 14 million yuan, it earned over 1.1 billion yuan at the box office. The film uses non-professional actors, yet it received a high score of 9.2 out of 10 on Douban, a popular movie review platform. Its success proves that a good story matters more than famous stars. Audiences were touched by the plot and recommended it to others, showing that sincere emotions can move people deeply.
The story focuses on duty and kindness rather than romance(浪漫史). It tells of a Chaoshan woman named Xie Nanzhi living in Thailand. After a fellow worker dies tragically (悲剧地), she decides not to tell his wife the truth right away. Instead, she pretends to be her friend and sends letters and money home for 18 years. Though she begins as an illiterate (目不识丁的) person, she learns to write so she can keep this promise. Every character she writes stands for her loyalty—a loyalty stronger than family or even life and death. Her quiet act of love touches the hearts of many viewers.
The film also reminds people of qiaopi, the letters and money sent home by overseas Chinese in the 19th and 20th centuries. In 2013, UNESCO added these archives to its Memory of the World Register. Like the letters in the film, real qiaopi crossed oceans to connect families. They show the hard work, perseverance, and deep love that Chinese migrants felt for their hometowns. Through these letters, we see not only financial help but also cultural identity and spiritual strength.
Today, Dear You offers a lesson for sharing local culture globally. It shows that stories rooted in specific places can still touch universal human feelings. When filmmakers combine simple, honest emotions with local traditions, their work can cross language and cultural barriers (障碍).
The success of Dear You reveals what Chinese cinema needs most. True cultural expression does not depend on fancy packaging or advanced technology. Instead, it comes from deep sincerity and emotional truth. By putting precious human feelings into plain stories, films can touch hearts and become part of a shared human experience.
1. How much did the film Dear You cost to make and how much did it earn at the box office?

2. What is the main story of the film Dear You?

3. What do the real qiaopi show about overseas Chinese? (list 2 points)

Passage 2
Yiwu, a famous Chinese city known for small goods, is called the “world’s supermarket” because it offers nearly all kinds of daily products. As a global soccer event held every four years, the World Cup makes Yiwu especially busy. The city provides most kinds of products that soccer fans around the world need for the big event.
One key to Yiwu’s success is early preparation. Local businesses start preparing World Cup products like flags, team jerseys and cheering horns one summer before the competition, much earlier than before. In most cases, shortly after the Spring Festival in February, most finished goods have already been sent to different countries worldwide.
Great transport conditions and low costs also help Yiwu stand out. It has a complete shipping network. Goods can be sent by sea, air, train and truck, making delivery fast and cheap. Moreover, all necessary raw materials such as cloth and plastic are easy to get in local markets. This saves plenty of time and money for producers.
Yiwu has greatly improved its products in recent years. It no longer only makes cheap, identical goods. Instead, local factories focus on creative designs and better quality. They can make customized products with special colors, patterns or players’ numbers to meet foreign buyers’ needs. This change helps Yiwu develop better in the future.
Its special business model also brings big advantages. Yiwu is full of small and medium-sized businesses that work together to form a complete production chain. Foreign buyers can get all World Cup supplies in one place, which saves them a lot of trouble.
The changes of Yiwu show the improvement of “Made in China”. Modern factories use smart technology and robots to improve efficiency while sticking to green production. They no longer copy others’ designs but create original works on their own.
In conclusion, Yiwu represents the new face of Chinese manufacturing. With reliable quality and creative ideas, “Made in China” has gained great trust from customers all over the world.

Passage 3
China has a large number of valuable historical sites. To better protect these cultural treasures, China joined the World Heritage Convention in 1985. Up to now, China owns 60 World Heritage Sites. These places are widely recognized for their special cultural and historical value for all human beings.
Many heritage sites prove the long history of Chinese civilization. The Liangzhu City Ruins, which was included in the World Heritage list in 2019, is a typical example. Dating back to the Neolithic Age, the 5,000-year-old ruins(遗址) have complete water systems and clear social grades. It strongly shows that China had a highly developed ancient civilization.
Other sites perfectly show China’s traditional culture and history. The Beijing Central Axis was added to the list in 2024. This 7.8-kilometer ancient building group was built from the Yuan to the Qing dynasties, reflecting the traditional Chinese ideas of balance and harmony (融洽). The Xixia Imperial Tombs, listed recently, present the special architecture(建筑风格) and art of the Xixia Dynasty and cultural communication along the Silk Road.
China’s heritage protection work has become more professional and systematic(有系统的). In the past, people only focused on rescuing endangered sites. Today, China uses scientific and planned methods to protect cultural relics. A new cultural relic protection law took effect in March 2025, providing stricter rules for heritage safety.
Modern technology also offers great help. Digital tools are widely used to manage and study heritage sites, helping experts explore their history more deeply. Besides, China actively carries out international cooperation. It has helped protect heritage sites in many countries like Egypt and Cambodia, and set up an Asian cultural heritage alliance to promote joint protection.
In short, China’s continuous protection efforts keep ancient history alive. They not only preserve precious cultural treasures for the nation, but also share splendid Chinese civilization with the whole world.

Passage 4
Fujian tulou are ancient round earthen buildings that look like huge fortresses (堡垒). Thanks to their special design and long history, they were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. In recent years, these old traditional buildings have gained new popularity and become famous tourist attractions.
Tulou tourism has greatly improved compared with the past. Visitors used to only watch the buildings from the outside. Now, they can live inside tulou homestays (家庭寄宿体验) and enjoy special local experiences. For example, a tourist traveled from Nanjing to Zhangzhou to stay in Changrong Building. This tulou keeps its original ancient appearance, but its inside has been fully updated. After professional renovation (整修) in 2023, it has modern rooms, soundproof walls, smart home equipment and quiet reading spaces. Tourists can also pick tea leaves and wear traditional local clothes to experience local culture.
Local people keep improving tourism services to attract more visitors. Early tulou homestays were simple and poorly managed. Now, locals focus on high-quality travel experiences. A local resident (居民) created an intangible cultural heritage market near Huaiyuan Building. It has attracted nearly 700,000 visitors since May 2025. To win over young tourists, creative souvenirs such as sound postcards and smart tulou models are also popular.
The tulou economy is becoming more diverse. Many old tulou houses have been turned into art galleries, coffee shops and libraries. Local authorities (当局) also hold interesting activities. During the Spring Festival, China-chic folk games and night parades were held, which brought over 100,000 tourists and greatly increased ticket income.
Local tourism workers hope to turn short half-day tours into rich full-day travel experiences. By combining ancient traditions with modern creativity, Fujian tulou are successfully revitalizing (使新生) cultural heritage and shining brightly in the modern world.
