Farah was on her parents’ farm in Malaysia. She heard a funny noise and went to look. She found a baby orangutan (猩猩). It was lonely and scared. Farah went to tell her parents.
“There’s an orangutan sanctuary (庇护地) ten miles from here,” said Dad. “We should call them.”
“Good idea,” said Mom. “I’ll call them now.”
“He looks hungry,” said Dad. “I’ll get him a banana.”
“He needs a name,” said Farah. “I’ll call him Coco.”
A team from the sanctuary arrived quickly.
“Why does Coco have to go to the sanctuary?” asked Farah.
“Orangutans are in danger in their habitat (栖息地) because there are logging sites (伐木点), big farms and illegal (非法的) hunters,” said the sanctuary assistant. “Coco is very young. At the sanctuary, he can grow up safely.”
“What happens at the sanctuary?” asked Farah.
“Well, Coco looks healthy, but tomorrow the vets (兽医) are going to do a check-up and they’re going to give him vaccinations (疫苗). The day after tomorrow, we’re going to send him to the orangutan school at the sanctuary!”
“Orangutan school!” said Farah. “What’s that?”
The sanctuary assistant smiled. “Orangutans usually stay with their mothers for six years. They learn how to live in the jungle. At the sanctuary, they learn from each other. Next week, the team is going to give Coco a buddy — an older orangutan who can teach him. He needs to learn how to find food and where to sleep.”

Passage 1
Public welfare funds (公益基金)are key public money to support people’s daily life. They cover many important fields, such as medical treatment, housing and different social insurances. To guarantee (确保) the funds are used properly for the public, the Chinese government carries out financial checks every year. These regular examinations aim to find out improper use of public money and protect people’s legal rights.
Recently, the government has found lots of problems in two major social insurances(保险): work-related injury insurance and maternity insurance(工伤保险与生育保险). Work-related injury insurance is designed to support workers who get injured at work. However, about 4.87 billion yuan of this fund was poorly managed. A large number of migrant construction workers(外来建筑工人) failed to get this insurance, so they had no safety protection once they got hurt at work. Besides, some people cheated the insurance system with fake accidents and false medical records. They have illegally gained nearly 48 million yuan since 2013.
Maternity insurance also has serious problems. It is supposed to help families with newborn babies, but over 1.08 billion yuan of funds were misused, influencing more than one million people. Many women could not get their deserved benefits because of complicated rules and work mistakes. Some employers even kept their workers’ maternity money instead of paying it to them.
In addition, agricultural and environmental protection funds(农业与环境保护专项资金) also face waste and misuse. Some public projects were not finished on schedule. Money for new farming technology was either spent on meaningless exhibitions or left unused, which wasted public resources.
These problems harm public trust in social services. The government has paid high attention to them and will strengthen daily checks, especially in local areas. It will also release detailed improvement reports. Through strict management, China will ensure all public welfare funds serve people in need in a real and effective way.

Passage 2
Nowadays, many young people feel great pressure when they start their first jobs. Recently, a new phrase “workplace childhood friends” has become popular among young workers. It means a special kind of relationship between colleagues who start their first career in the same company together.
This special friendship comes from people’s early working experience. As new employees(雇员), young workers have little work experience. They usually feel nervous, make mistakes and feel confused about unfamiliar work. When they go through these difficulties together, they build close and sincere friendship. Different from common workplace relationships which focus on career benefits, this friendship is based on true emotional (感情的) support.
Workplace childhood friends always support each other at work. They help one another finish difficult tasks, share their true feelings and exchange useful work information. If someone feels upset or tired under work pressure, their friends will comfort and encourage them. They also learn from each other and help one another make progress in their careers.
This special friendship is good for young people’s mental health. Facing heavy work pressure, these friends are reliable (可信赖的) partners. They help each other keep calm and confident at work. Besides, most of these friendships can last for a long time. Even if people change jobs or move to other cities, they still keep in close touch and share their daily lives.
Most workplace childhood friends have similar personalities and life attitudes. They respect each other’s personal space, understand each other’s feelings and get along comfortably with no pressure.
In fact, these friends are more than just coworkers. They build a lifelong support system for each other. For new workers, this pure and sincere friendship is very precious. It tells young people that growing up in careers is not a lonely journey, and warm companionship makes working life more meaningful.

Passage 3
Many young people in China are facing a big challenge today. They need to take good care of their sick and elderly parents. This problem is especially serious in rural areas. When the elderly can no longer look after themselves, many common families fall into great difficulty.
Zhao Zhiqiang’s story is a typical example. His father once had a serious brain disease and lost the ability to move, speak or eat by himself. He needed care all day and night. With no savings and no other family members to help, Zhao had to give up his job to look after his father full-time. His family could only depend on a small government subsidy (补贴). After paying for medicine and daily things, they almost had no money left. He could not support his wife and children, so his family had to live separately. He really hopes to get professional care support so that he can go back to work.
This is a common social problem in modern China. As people live longer and families become smaller, taking care of disabled elderly relatives brings huge pressure to young people. In some serious cases, one elderly person’s illness may make the whole family poor and even stop them from working.
To solve this problem, the Chinese government has started the Long-Term Care Insurance (长期护理保险). It is also called the “sixth insurance” and improves the traditional social insurance system. This policy is for people who cannot take care of themselves for a long time. It offers money to pay for professional caregivers, who can provide services at home or in nursing centers.
The insurance is being put into use step by step and will cover the whole country by 2028. The money comes from the government, employers and workers, and it serves people from all kinds of jobs. This new policy brings great hope to poor families. It helps reduce their pressure and lets them live a more stable and happy life.

Passage 4
Losing eyesight is a great pity, but it does not mean losing hope and a bright future. Guo Bin, a 19-year-old boy from Shanxi Province, has proved this with his amazing experience. Though he is blind, he has made great achievements through hard work and strong perseverance.
Guo Bin lost his eyesight in a serious accident at the age of six. His world turned completely dark overnight. However, he never lost heart or gave up on himself. With the care and support from his family, teachers and local community, he kept studying bravely and moving forward. He took the special college entrance exam for disabled students and got a high score of 721 out of 800 points. He ranked(排列) first among all medical major candidates across the country. This autumn, he will study traditional Chinese medicine and computer science at Changchun University.
Guo’s journey has never been easy. After the accident, he studied in a special blind school in Wuhan for over twelve years. The school and local government paid for his study and living costs, and helped his family a lot, offering him a stable learning environment. To study well without sight, he learned Braille and practiced it patiently every day. He got excellent grades in all subjects. He was hard-working and modest, and he was always ready to help his classmates with their lessons.
Besides studying, Guo loves music to enrich his life. He joined a band for blind students and learned to play many musical instruments. He even won many national music awards. Music brings him joy and confidence, making his life more wonderful.
Guo Bin has a warm dream for his future. He hopes to work as a teacher in his old school and help more blind children. He wants to pass on knowledge and hope to them. His story tells us that real strength lies in perseverance and kindness, which can always light our way forward even in hard times.

Passage 5
Many people wrongly believe that popularizing Putonghua means giving up ethnic minority (少数民族) languages. In fact, these two things never conflict (冲突)with each other. Chinese laws clearly support and protect both standard Putonghua and all kinds of minority languages, and both are protected by the country’s constitution(宪法).
China fully respects every ethnic group’s right to use and develop its own language. A number of laws have been made to protect these valuable cultures. For example, the Ethnic Unity and Progress Promotion Law(《民族团结与促进进步法》), which came into force on July 1, calls for the protection and inheritance of minority languages. It encourages people to use modern technology to develop these languages and save ancient written works. It also promotes (促进)language communication among different ethnic groups to help people understand each other better.
The equal protection of all languages is also shown in national political life. Many minority representatives(少数民族代表) take part in the National People’s Congress. Every ethnic group has its own representatives, no matter how small its population is. In official meetings, representatives can speak and read papers in their native languages. Important legal and official documents are translated into seven main minority languages, such as Mongolian, Tibetan and Uygur.
Popularizing Putonghua is of great importance. As a common national language, it removes communication barriers between different regions and ethnic groups. It helps improve public education, boost social development and unite people to promote national modernization. Just like other countries in the world, China needs a standard language to keep smooth public communication and stable social order.
In short, the popularization of Putonghua and the development of minority languages go hand in hand. Putonghua strengthens national unity, while minority languages preserve traditional ethnic cultures. They complement (补充) each other and build a solid foundation for a harmonious and diverse Chinese society.
