Farah was on her parents’ farm in Malaysia. She heard a funny noise and went to look. She found a baby orangutan (猩猩). It was lonely and scared. Farah went to tell her parents.
“There’s an orangutan sanctuary (庇护地) ten miles from here,” said Dad. “We should call them.”
“Good idea,” said Mom. “I’ll call them now.”
“He looks hungry,” said Dad. “I’ll get him a banana.”
“He needs a name,” said Farah. “I’ll call him Coco.”
A team from the sanctuary arrived quickly.
“Why does Coco have to go to the sanctuary?” asked Farah.
“Orangutans are in danger in their habitat (栖息地) because there are logging sites (伐木点), big farms and illegal (非法的) hunters,” said the sanctuary assistant. “Coco is very young. At the sanctuary, he can grow up safely.”
“What happens at the sanctuary?” asked Farah.
“Well, Coco looks healthy, but tomorrow the vets (兽医) are going to do a check-up and they’re going to give him vaccinations (疫苗). The day after tomorrow, we’re going to send him to the orangutan school at the sanctuary!”
“Orangutan school!” said Farah. “What’s that?”
The sanctuary assistant smiled. “Orangutans usually stay with their mothers for six years. They learn how to live in the jungle. At the sanctuary, they learn from each other. Next week, the team is going to give Coco a buddy — an older orangutan who can teach him. He needs to learn how to find food and where to sleep.”
“Orangutan school sounds fun!” said Farah.

Passage 1
China has started a national plan to improve AI education for all people. This plan is more than just teaching students to use computers. It aims to prepare the whole country for the future. Its goal is not only to train professional AI experts, but also to help common people use AI technology safely and properly.
AI brings the biggest changes to teachers’ work. In the past, teachers wasted lots of time on boring repetitive (重复的) work, such as grading homework and planning lessons. Now AI can finish most of these tasks. This great change helps teachers take on new roles. Instead of only giving lectures in class, teachers can act as guides and helpers. They can design interesting learning activities and guide students to solve problems by themselves.
Students’ learning ways are also improved. They learn to take responsibility for their own study, and classrooms have become places for teachers and students to learn and cooperate together. However, AI cannot take the place of teachers. Only teachers can teach students valuable human qualities, such as kindness, honesty and mental health skills. Technology is created to help people, not replace them.
We should avoid two wrong opinions about AI. Some people refuse to learn AI because they think it is useless. Others believe AI can do all things perfectly. In fact, AI is a powerful tool, but it always needs human guidance.
To carry out the national plan well, schools need to check teachers’ new skills. They should pay attention to how teachers use AI and combine it with different subjects, including art, sports and moral education. In short, excellent teachers in the future should master both technology and human education. They will cultivate creative and responsible young people who can adapt to the future world.
1. What is the purpose of China’s national AI education plan?

2. What repetitive work did teachers use to do in the past?

Passage 2
Suzhou is famous for its classical gardens. On the city’s Pingjiang Road, people can see something special: a bowl of “noodles” that cannot be eaten. In fact, they are soft plush toys. This creative work is created by Zhou Jing, and it offers a new and fun way to protect China’s traditional culture.
China has many intangible (触不到的) cultural heritages. They include traditional skills such as making local noodles, silk embroidery and special pastries. The skill of making Suzhou-style noodles also became a cultural heritage in 2020. However, many young people think these old traditions are boring and hard to understand. Zhou Jing wants to change this situation with creative designs.
Zhou Jing once worked as a tour organizer for European trips. When travel stopped during the pandemic, she came back to Suzhou. She found that although many visitors loved Suzhou’s gardens and food, there were few interesting souvenirs that truly showed the city’s local culture. Then she decided to create cultural products by herself.
She first designed a plush noodle bowl toy. It looks just like real Suzhou noodles, with different choices of noodles and broth. This lovely toy helps people learn about local food culture in an easy way. At first, her products were too expensive and not popular. Later, she improved them. She made the toys smaller, cheaper and more practical, such as fridge magnets and blind boxes. She also worked with an old pastry shop to turn traditional pastries (糕点) into soft toys.
Now her creative products are very popular. They are sold at the city’s Intangible Cultural Heritage Summer Shopping Month(非物质文化遗产夏季购物月). With these cute and fun toys, Zhou Jing successfully attracts young people to know and love traditional culture. She tells people that cultural protection is not always serious. It can be lively, interesting and full of warmth.
1. What special thing can people see on Pingjiang Road in Suzhou?

Passage 3
The Dragon Boat Festival is more than a traditional festival for eating delicious food. It has become an important cultural tourism event in China. During the three-day holiday, many people travel around the country to join traditional activities and experience our cultural heritage.
Dragon boat racing is the most popular festival activity. In the past, people only watched the exciting races. Now, it has become an interactive (互动的) experience for tourists. Foshan in Guangdong is famous for its intense dragon boat races. People even call them the “Formula 1 on Water”. Many tourists feel that listening to the loud drums and cheers on site is far more exciting than watching videos online.
Special festival food also attracts lots of travelers. Zongzi, or sticky rice dumplings, is the classic food of the festival. Instead of arguing about sweet or salty zongzi, people now travel to taste local flavors. For example, Quanzhou has braised ( 炖) pork zongzi and Guiyang has special plant ash (灰) zongzi. Cities with local snacks like Qingdao and Lanzhou also welcome many more tourists during the holiday.
This cultural craze (狂热) greatly helps local businesses. Miluo in Hunan, the hometown of poet Qu Yuan, has 20 dragon boat factories with huge yearly income. Zongzi factories also work day and night to meet market needs. With modern machines, workers can make thousands of zongzi every day and earn good wages (工资).
Moreover, the festival wins global attention. Foreign tourist bookings have grown greatly compared with last year. It shows that Chinese traditional culture is becoming more popular around the world. In short, the Dragon Boat Festival perfectly shows how old traditions drive modern tourism and local economy. It mixes sports, food and history, letting people feel the beauty of Chinese culture in fun and lively ways.

Passage 4
In the past, many foreign tourists felt it hard to travel to China. The visa procedures (签证办理流程) were complex, and local payment systems were difficult for foreigners to use. But now, things have changed greatly. According to a travel report, China is becoming a top tourism country in the world, even ahead of the US and Japan.
Three main reasons lead to this great progress. First, it is much easier for foreign visitors to enter China. The country now offers visa-free entry for people from more than 50 countries. Tourists can now plan trips to famous sights like the Great Wall and the Terracotta Army just as easily as traveling in Europe.
Second, China’s transportation has improved a lot. The country has built a large network of high-speed trains and new airports. These convenient traffic systems connect big cities such as Beijing and Shanghai with smaller cultural cities like Chengdu and Xi’an. Tourists can travel to more places across the country, avoid crowded scenic spots and experience real local life.
Third, new technology makes traveling in China simple and smooth. The development of digital services helps foreign visitors a lot. Popular mobile payments, smart navigation and fast security (智能导航与快速安全防护) checks make the whole travel experience easy and comfortable. The old trouble of failing to use foreign credit cards is slowly disappearing.
The fast development of tourism brings great benefits. More foreign tourists come to visit China, while more Chinese people choose to travel abroad. It helps build two-way cultural communication between China and other countries. Experts say China is special because it mixes modern technology with ancient history. From modern city skyscrapers(摩天大楼) to quiet rural tea houses, China provides unique travel experiences that no other country can offer.

Passage 5
Recently, a new trend called “Me-ism” has become popular on Chinese social media. It means people no longer blindly follow popular styles. Instead, they choose to show their real personality, especially when decorating their homes.
In the past, many young people loved similar home styles, such as the “buttercream style”. This style uses soft and warm colors to make houses feel comfortable. However, too many people copied it, so most homes looked exactly the same. People felt these houses were just like fixed templates (样板), without personal features. This is the main reason why “Me-ism” appears. People hope to be different and unique.
Different from old styles, “Me-ism” designs homes to suit owners’ real life and hobbies. For example, pet lovers can build small cat doors and climbing shelves for their pets. People who want an easy life can change their house details, such as building higher counters to avoid bending down. Some people design homes based on their interests. A woman in Chengdu even created a small indoor garden because she loves traditional Chinese gardens.
This trend shows a great change in young people’s ideas. In the past, people decorated homes to show off their success with expensive furniture. But now, they pay more attention to their own feelings. They wish their homes can bring them peace and happiness, no matter what others think.
It also shows social changes. People used to focus on practicability (实用性), then they loved luxury(豪华) things. Now, they choose self-expression. They no longer care too much about others’ praise but focus on inner satisfaction. Today’s society is more open to different lifestyles. A good home is not about its size or price, but about whether it suits the people living inside.
1. What does the “Me-ism” trend encourage people to do when decorating homes?
_______________________________________________
2. Why does the “Me-ism” trend become popular among young people?
_______________________________________________
3. What examples does the text give about “Me-ism” home design? (list 2 ways)

4. What do you think of the “Me-ism” home decoration trend? And why?
