Passage 5
In 2011 our home near Brisbane was flooded with waters. Where we live is semi rural, and although we had 1 many floods before, this time the water was much higher.
We watched as the 2 water covered our beehives (蜂房). I can’t explain how 3 we felt. There was nothing we could do for them. The beehives were too heavy to move. My husband and I held each other and cried when we 4 them disappear.
Our 29 5 were safe in the henhouse on a small hill — or so we thought. Suddenly we heard 6 squawking (尖叫). Our chickens sensed danger 7 the flood waters rose dangerously close to their home. Their squawking was loud. Suddenly, we saw a small boat with two 8 rowing towards us through the pouring rain. Maybe they could save our hens. The chickens were shoved into boxes and taped closed. Then, a few boxes of hens at a time were put in the boat and 9 to the safety of our tractor shed (拖拉机棚).
It was 10 egg laying time, and the shed was warm and dry. We hung nets to keep the hens inside and used boxes as nests. We tore newspapers to make the nests comfortable.
Twenty-four hours and a disturbing noise of chicken poo (鸡屎) later, the complaints were coming 11 from the hens. The tractors weren’t comfortable for resting, and the nesting boxes, well, excuse me, 12 where were the soft wood shavings (刨花) they normally sat on to lay their eggs? 13 the floodwaters subsided (回落) before there was a total revolt (起义)! While they were happily nesting back in Fowl Manor (家禽庄园), it took us many days to 14 the tractors — it is 15 just how much mess 29 hens can make!
We will be forever grateful for the kindness of those two strangers.
