With their father away serving in the war, the girls live with their kind and strong mother, Marmee, in a small Massachusetts town. The family is poor but full of love. Deep down in the sea, Ivan sat on the floor covered with sand. He was bored and unhappy. He watched other pretty fish swimming in and out of rocks. They were laughing and dancing in the sea. “Why am I so different?” he said to himself.
“You are an octopus (章鱼), Ivan. That’s special.” The sweet voice of Peter, a beautiful white dolphin, always made Ivan feel better. Ivan looked up at the white dolphin and smiled. Peter said, “Let’s play games together.” They were having a lot of fun and they didn’t know they swam far from home.
Suddenly, Peter saw a large shark swimming above them. “It is Big White… the biggest, most terrible shark in the sea,” he shouted to Ivan. Peter looked at Big White hopelessly. Peter was so afraid that he couldn’t swim. Just at this moment, Big White rushed down towards them. An idea came to Ivan. He sprayed (喷) black ink over the shark’s eyes. Then Ivan and Peter swam away and got home safely.
“Are you OK?” asked Ivan. “Yes. I am lucky to have you as my friend!” replied Peter. Ivan’s face turned red. “I guess being different from others can be so cool sometimes,” Ivan said. “That is what I want to tell you,” Peter said.

Taking a nap is a good way for students to relax after lunch. To make it more comfortable, many middle and high schools use foldable (可折叠的) desks and chairs. However, not all of these desks and chairs are well designed-some are the wrong size or shape, and their poor design may even cause discomfort or harm to students.
To solve this, a new national rule was rolled out on 2nd September. It explains clearly how to make and use foldable desks and chairs correctly.
In primary schools, desks should be between 45.5 and 73 centimeters tall. In middle schools, they should be between 56.5 and 79 cm tall. Chairs should be at least 36 cm wide to help students sit well. For naps, the chairs can be turned into a bed. A bed should be at least 105 cm long, and the backrest (靠背) should lean back more than 135 degrees.
The desks and chairs must also be strong. For example, a chair can be folded up to 10,000 times. They should be easy to clean as well. If ink gets on them, students should be able to clean it with an eraser.
The new rule will take effect on 1st February next year. Before that, experts said that schools still need to think about a few things. For example, do the new desks fit in different classrooms? And are they good for classes with many students?
1.What is the new national rule about?

3.Do you want to take a nap with such desks and chairs? Why or why not?

Because such desks and chairs are well-designed to be comfortable and safe, which can help me relax better during naps. / No. Because I prefer to nap in a more comfortable environment like a bed, and the foldable desks and chairs may not meet my needs.

One day, a baby snail (蜗牛) found that he had to carry a big and heavy shell at any time. He was confused (困惑的), so he went up to his mother and asked, “Why was I born with a shell that grew so hard and heavy?” His mother said, “Because we don’t have bones to hold us up. We can only move slowly, so we need a shell to protect us.”
The baby snail asked again, “The caterpillar (毛毛虫) has no bones, either, and she can’t move quickly. Why can she live without a shell?” The mother snail answered, “That’s because a caterpillar will become a butterfly. She can fly high into the sky. The sky can protect her.”
The baby snail had one more question. “But the earthworm (蚯蚓) moves like us. He has no bones and he won’t turn into a butterfly. Why doesn’t he carry a hard and heavy shell?” His mother said, “He can dig a hole and hide in the ground, and then the earth can protect him.” The baby snail then cried, “We are so poor. We have no protection from the sky or from the ground.” His mother smiled at him, “That’s why we have a shell. My dear, imagine that if we don’t have the shells, what will happen to us? A student asked his teacher, “What is greed (贪婪)?” The teacher said, “In order to answer your question, go through the sweet factory next to our school and pick one sweet you like best. But there is a rule: As you pass through the factory, you cannot turn back. You must pick the sweet as you go forward only.”
The student went to the sweet factory. As he walked through, he saw one sweet was wrapped (装) nicely. He really liked it, but he thought he could find a better one later. So, he walked further, and then he saw another sweet. But again, he thought the same. When he started to reach near the end of the factory, he couldn’t see any sweets as big as the one he didn’t pick earlier and started to regret his decision of letting it go.
Finally, he gave up. He went back to the teacher with an empty hand and gave an explanation of what he had done.
The teacher told him, “You did like the first sweet very much, but still you kept looking for a better one. And later you realized that what you let go of was the best sweet you could find there. This is called greed.”

Do you ever want to talk to the writer after reading a book he or she wrote? At Boone Middle School in Florida, US, all eighth-graders had a video talk with US writer S. L. Rottman, who wrote 10 books. Before the talk, they read the writer’s book Hero in their reading class.
The book is about a 15-year-old boy named Sean. The law makes him work on a horse farm. But the book’s ending is not clear. Will Sean just do what he has to do, or will he make some changes? The students wanted to know what happened to Sean and asked Rottman about it. The answer they received was that “it’s good for you guys to think of your own ending.”
Caitlynne Sheppard was happy with the answer. “She gave us an ending in the book and told us her alternative (供选择的) ending, but it still left us trying to think what might happen.”
In fact, the video talk was just part of the school’s yearly reading project. Students not only had to finish reading the book Hero, but also needed to have a talk with the “heroes” around them and make reports. For example, Emily Cain talked with a policeman. “Nobody notices that policemen might not be able to go home that day, or that they have to put their life in danger to help other people,” she said.

Over time, Clark and Dale became good friends. Every afternoon, Dale would look out of the room’s only window, describing the scenery outside for his friend. He told Clark about the flowers in a park outside the window, the people walking by, the green trees beside the roads—anything that might interest a man.
One morning, when a nurse came only to check the two men, she found that Dale had died in his sleep. As soon as the room seemed tidy again, Clark asked if he could move to the bed next to the window so that he could look out of the window himself. The nurse agreed. Have you ever dreamed of your high school life? Most students may hold the idea that high school life is busy and boring, but I’d like to say that it isn’t what you think of it.
In my opinion, study always comes first in my high school life. When I received the letter of admission (录取通知书) in summer, I clearly knew what I should do. So, I decided to study hard and keep learning as before. I strongly believed that knowledge could change my life. By working hard, I got good grades in exams.
My school also provided me with many good chances that helped me to improve myself. For example, I used to be afraid of standing in front of crowds to express myself. But after taking part in many competitions held by my school, I’m not afraid any more. Donating activities made me know how to communicate with others. I also developed social skills and trained my abilities.
I often visited the library. It is said that “Shelves of books, oceans of knowledge”. Keeping reading the books I was interested in gave me the chance to share stories with my new friends and it also broadened (拓宽) my horizons (眼界). Whenever I felt sad, lost or was in trouble, staying in the library could help me calm down.

The word zhiyin, which means close friends, comes from the story of Yu Boya and Zhong Ziqi in the Warring States Period (战国时期).
Boya was good at playing guqin. One day, he was playing music. To Boya’s surprise, Ziqi,a woodcutter (樵夫), who happened to pass by, could understand what he wanted to express through his music. After a long talk, they became good friends. Since Boya had to return to his state, they agreed to meet again in the following year.
Unluckily, when getting back to visit Ziqi, Boya heard that his friend died of an illness. Boya was so sad and in front of Ziqi’s tomb (墓), he played again the music he had played when they first met.
2.What are two requirements (要求) for the desks and chairs besides size and shape?
3.Do you want to take a nap with such desks and chairs? Why or why not?
The hot sun will dry out our bodies and we’ll have nowhere to sleep. What’s more, we’ll die in heavy rain. How terrible it is! We don’t depend on the sky or the ground for protection. We should depend on ourselves.”

2.How did the baby snail like his shell?
3.What will the caterpillar in the story become when she grows up?

From an early age, Fiona tried to be kind and friendly to everyone. She sometimes invited the whole class to her birthday party and gave presents to everybody.
However, everything changed on International Day of Friendship. In class that day, everyone had to make three presents to give to their three best friends. Fiona enjoyed the task of choosing three from all her classmates. But when all the presents had been made and shared out, she was the only one that didn’t receive a present! Fiona hadn’t expected this and felt terrible. Crying for hours, everyone came to comfort her, but each stayed only a short time before leaving—just as she had done to others so many times. She realized she was a good companion (伙伴), but she hadn’t been a true friend to anyone.
That night, Fiona told her mother about everything. Her mother said, “My dear, you cannot buy friends with a smile or a few good words. If you want true friends, you must give them time and real care.”

1.What did Fiona do to show her kindness and friendliness?
2.How many presents did Fiona receive on International Day of Friendship?

In our life, we let go of many good things because of our greed of having even better ones. This is human nature: We always want something better. But we let go of many good things which can give us similar satisfaction and make us happy.
Learn to make your choice wisely.
1.Which sweet did the teacher ask the student to choose?
2.Why did the student give up picking the first sweet?
3.How many sweets did the student carry to his teacher?
4.According to the author, why do we let go of many good things?
5.What can we learn from the story?
1.Before talking with the writer, what did the students read?
2.How did Caitlynne Sheppard feel when receiving the answer?
3.Do you think this project helps? Why or why not?

In many Chinese cities, primary and middle schools have made class breaks longer from 10 to 15 minutes. The governments (政府) want students and teachers to do more outdoor activities.
Before, Chinese schools usually had 10-minute breaks. But it was not enough time for students to go outside and play. Sometimes, schools didn’t let students leave the classroom during breaks because they were worried about safety.
In Beijing, primary schools’ morning and afternoon times haven’t changed. Middle schools end five minutes later.
In Wuxi, Jiangsu, schools have 15-minute breaks and one PE class every day. Students must do at least 100 minutes of exercise at school. The education officer said this helps students play outside and talk to each other.
A Qingdao primary school has many outdoor games like jump rope and hula hoop. In May, a fitness test showed that 47 percent of Qingdao students got “excellent” or “good” fitness grades.

3.In which city do the middle schools end five minutes later?

Clark and Dale were staying in the same room in hospital. Clark was so sick that he could not even move his body. He had to spend all his time lying on his back. Dale could sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon. His bed was next to the room’s only window.
Slowly, he could take his first look at the world outside. To his surprise, he could see nothing but a blank wall of another building.
The nurse explained that Dale had been blind. He had never seen anything outside the window at all—but he described beautiful scenes to help his friend feel better.

2.What did Dale tell Clark about the scenery outside? (Less than 12 words)

In short, my high school life was busy but meaningful, and I also became a better person during this period.
Though life is busy, chances will come only if you have a prepared mind. Am I right?
1.What does the writer think is the most important about high school life?
2.What did the writer decide to do when he received the letter of admission?
3.How does the writer feel after taking part in many competitions?

The word zhiyin, which means close friends, comes from the story of Yu Boya and Zhong Ziqi in the Warring States Period (战国时期).
Boya was good at playing guqin. One day, he was playing music. To Boya’s surprise, Ziqi,a woodcutter (樵夫), who happened to pass by, could understand what he wanted to express through his music. People in the Song Dynasty built the Guqin Tai in Hanyang to remember the deep friendship between Boya and Ziqi. It became an important part of the local culture.
Zhiyin culture has new development now. The famous ancient Chinese classical music piece Gaoshan Liushui was performed during the G20 Summit (峰会) in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. I go to an international (国际的) school with Sanan and Chinda. The school teaches about 70% in English and 30% in Thai (泰语). I’m good at the spoken language, but Thai writing is very difficult. The cooking lesson is my favorite. I’m learning about Thai (泰式) food and culture. When I come back, I will cook you a real Thai meal.
Last weekend I went to Pattaya Beach with Sanan and Chinda by taxi. I thought it was great. Next month we will go to Phuket Island. My parents went there last year, and they said the sunshine and beaches there were very beautiful. Now Chinda is teaching me how to swim. I hope I can swim happily with her on Phuket Island. It will be my first time to swim in the sea.
Elephants are an important part of Thai culture and way of life. They are a symbol (象征) of Thailand for many years. People use them to do work. They also ride them and wash them. The elephants look very interesting.
Love,
Minnie
