Over recent years, letter writing has been replaced by other ways of communicating. Technology has developed so fast that we now expect to be able to see people at any time and get a response immediately. It feels much more natural for us to send text messages and emails than writing letters.
It is true that these modern ways of communicating have their own advantages. We can talk to people all over the world even in a few seconds. Communicating with people by sending text messages or emails can help us save time and receive a reply as soon as possible. We can also correct mistakes in our e-mails before sending them. But if we make a mistake in a letter, we have to cross it out or start again.
But have you ever thought about what we are losing? Yes, we are forgetting about the art of letter writing.
Almost everybody would say that reading a hand-written letter from a friend is enjoyable. When you know someone has spent the time writing a letter for you, especially a birthday letter, there’s something very special in your heart.
On the other hand, not only will the person receiving the letter benefit from a lovely envelope (信封), but also the writer himself. When we know we’re doing something that will make our friends very happy, we feel good about ourselves, too.
In addition, writing a letter can improve your language skills and you can also learn some new expressions.
6. What is one advantage of modern communication mentioned in the text?
A. It helps to improve our handwriting. B. It allows us to correct mistakes easily.
C. It makes us feel more special. D. It helps us learn new expressions.
7. According to the text, how might the writer of a letter feel?
A. Worried about making mistakes. B. Happy to make his/ her friend happy.
C. Stressed about spending too much time. D. Sad about the loss of communication skills.
8. What does the underlined phrase “cross it out” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Copy the mistake. B. Mark out the wrong words.
C. Give up writing the letter. D. Rewrite the whole sentence.
9. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a benefit of letter writing?
A. Bringing joy to the receiver. B. Making the writer feel good.
C. Helping to save a lot of time. D. Improving language skills.
10. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Disadvantages of Modern Technology
B. The Importance of Writing Letters
C. The Art of Letter Writing Should Not Be Forgotten
D. How to Improve Your Communication Skills

Breaking the Mountains—A New High-Speed Railway
On June 30, 2026, the Xi’an–Shiyan High-Speed Railway officially opened to traffic. The 257-kilometre line runs at a speed of 350 kilometres per hour. It cuts the travel time between Xi’an and Wuhan from 5 hours to about 2 hours and 41 minutes.
For thousands of years, the Qinling Mountains acted as a natural barrier separating northern and southern China. Trips between the two regions used to be slow and tiring. The new railway completely breaks this traffic barrier. It connects Xi’an, a historic northern city, with Shiyan in Hubei Province.
The line includes seven stations: Xi’an East, Lantian, Shangluo West, Shanyang, Mangchuan Pass, Yunxi and Shiyan East. It forms a key link in China’s national high-speed rail network, connecting the Wuhan and Xi’an transport corridors.
Since its opening, local tourism has grown rapidly. In the first month after operation, the number of visitors to Shiyan rose by nearly 40% year-on-year. Local shops, hotels and catering businesses have all gained more income from tourists.
The Xi’an–Shiyan line is just one example of China’s fast-developing transport network. In the first half of 2026 alone, China finished 355.2 kilometres of new high-speed railways. These new lines make trips faster, more convenient and comfortable for millions of people across the country.
11. When did the Xi’an–Shiyan High-Speed Railway open?
A. On June 30, 2025. B. On June 30, 2026. C. On July 30, 2026. D. On January 1, 2026.
12. How long does it take to travel from Xi’an to Wuhan by the new railway?
A. About 5 hours. B. About 4 hours.
C. About 2 hours and 41 minutes. D. About 3 hours and 30 minutes.
13. What used to separate north and south China?
A. A popular tourist area. B. The Qinling Mountains natural barrier.
C. A network of old railways. D. A large city in Hubei.
14. How did tourism change in Shiyan after the railway opened?
A. Fewer visitors came. B. Visitor numbers rose by nearly 40%.
C. The number of tourists stayed the same. D. The city stopped receiving tourists.
15. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. China builds new railways that greatly change people’s trips.
B. The Qinling Mountains have amazing natural scenery.
