If I hadn’t been a struggling violinist, I might have never become a writer. In fourth grade, my school had an orchestra program, and I eagerly signed up to learn the violin with my friend Irene. We both loved the idea of being in the orchestra and walked together to our music lessons every week.
Our orchestra teacher, Mr. Baumgartner, was strict. He told us that if we damaged our instruments, we’d be kicked out of the program because the school couldn’t afford replacements. Unfortunately, I wasn’t very good at the violin. One day, while practicing, the bridge of my violin flew off and the strings broke. Scared of Mr. Baumgartner’s reaction, I tried to fix it myself with some glue. But when he saw my crooked bridge, he told me I couldn’t be in the orchestra anymore. Instead, he suggested I join the glee club.
I switched to the glee club and found I enjoyed singing with others, even though I didn’t have a great voice. Later, the junior high chorus held auditions for the All City Honor Chorus, and I was one of only five girls from my school to audition. Because of this, I made the chorus.
After a performance, my English teacher asked if anyone in the chorus wanted to write an article for the school newspaper. For some reason, I raised my hand. I loved reading, but I had never thought about writing before. However, when I saw my name and words in print, I knew I wanted to write more.
The next year, I became the editor of the school newspaper. I realized that writing was my true passion. Looking back, I understand that if I hadn’t broken my violin and joined the glee club, I might never have discovered my love for writing. Years later, I saw Irene at a reunion. She told me she had become a professional violinist in Australia. I thought, "That could have been me." But Mr. Baumgartner’s decision led me to a different path — one filled with words and stories. I’m grateful for that turn in my life and for Mr. Baumgartner’s unexpected guidance.
4. What caused the author to leave the school orchestra?
A. She lost interest in playing the violin.
B. She wanted to join the glee club instead.
C. She damaged her violin and failed to repair it properly.
D. Her friend Irene became much better than her.
5. What was the initial result of the author joining the glee club?
A. She immediately discovered her talent for singing.
B. She was selected for a city-wide honor chorus.
C. She decided to become a professional singer.
D. She started writing articles for the newspaper.
6. How did the author feel when she first saw her writing published?
A. Surprised but indifferent.
B. Proud and determined to continue.
C. Regretful about her past choices.
D. Nervous about others’ opinions.
7. What is the main message the author wants to convey?
A. Failure in one area can lead to success in another.
B. Strict teachers are essential for student development.
C. Childhood friendships can shape our future careers.
D. Natural talent is more important than hard work.
C
If you proudly believe you’re right in a disagreement with a friend or colleague, a new study suggests why you may actually be wrong. Researchers found that people naturally assume they have all the information they need to make a decision or support their position, even when they do not. The researchers called it the “illusion of information adequacy”.
“We found that, in general, people don’t stop to think whether there might be more information that would help them make a more informed decision,” said study co-author Angus Fletcher, a professor of English at The Ohio State University. “If you give people a few pieces of information that seems to line up, most will say ‘that sounds about right’ and go with that.”
The study, published in the journal PLOS ONE, involved 1,261 Americans who participated online. They were split into three groups who read an article about a fictional school that lacked adequate water. One group read an article that only gave reasons why the school should merge with another that had adequate water; a second group’s article only gave reasons for staying separate and hoping for other solutions; and the third group read all the arguments for the schools merging and for staying separate.
The findings showed that the two groups who read half the story — either just the pro-merging or just the anti-merging arguments — still believed they had enough information to make a good decision. “Those with half the information actually show greater certainty in their decision to merge or remain separate than those who had the complete story,” Fletcher said.
These discoveries enhance our understanding of naïve realism, where individuals perceive their personal viewpoints as the factual reality, as Fletcher noted. Research on naïve realism often focuses on how people have different understandings of the same situation.
“Your first move when you disagree with someone should be to think, ‘Is there something that I’m missing that would help me see their perspective and understand their position better?’” Fletcher said, “That’s the way to fight this illusion of information adequacy.”
8. What will “illusion of information adequacy” make us do?
A. Believe we have enough information.
B. Judge if we have enough information.
C. Seek all information to make a decision.
D. Hesitate to decide without full information.
9. In the study, who are more confident in decision-making?
A. Critical information readers. B. Balanced information readers.
C. Overloaded information readers. D. One-sided information readers.
10. Which of the examples can illustrate naïve realism?
A. A teacher encourages multiple viewpoints.
B. A scientist draws a conclusion based on data.
C. A driver insists the other party is fully responsible.
D. A student writes an essay with limited search results.
11. What does Fletcher advise us to do in the text?
A. To rely on your own information. B. To listen to those who agree with you.
C. To think about overlooked viewpoints. D. To assume you have all the relevant facts.
D
Mosquito swarms (群) may sound like chaos, but male mosquitoes are incredible listeners. Despite the noise, they can hear the faint sounds made by female wingbeats. Scientists have long used sound traps to catch male mosquitoes. These traps imitate female wingbeat sounds to attract males. But in real-world settings, most of these traps underperform.
A recent study from Nagoya University could explain why these traps fail to hold male mosquitoes’ attention. The researchers used calcium imaging(钙成像)to study brain activity in male and female mosquitoes. They examined responses in the AMMC, a key hearing region in the mosquito brain.
“We found that in males, the AMMC showed activity across 150 to 500 Hz and that females mostly responded between 100 to 200 Hz,” noted Professor Matthew Su. “So males could locate mates in buzzing clouds while avoiding human defences.” Males also showed four unique patterns of sound responses, whereas females showed two unique patterns and one shared with males. This suggests that males process sound in more diverse ways than females. Sound traps often catch only a few male mosquitoes each day because they don’t match the complex sound cues that male mosquitoes truly seek.
The team also examined the base of the antennae (触须) of mosquitoes. They found males have more genes linked to cilia, which are tiny hairs that detect vibration. “Cilia are thought to function to increase receptive sensitivity to certain sounds,” explained Professor Azusa Kamikouchi. “This sound processing mechanism may be a specialized and sophisticated one that is not found in other insects.” A gene called fd3f, which is known to guide cilia development, was also more active in males. This suggests that males are genetically wired for better hearing.
Male mosquitoes rely on the sound of female wings to find mates. With this deep understanding of how male mosquitoes hear, scientists can redesign traps that imitate the real complexity of female wingbeats, therefore disrupting the reproduction of mosquitoes. Besides, this study significantly broadens and deepens how we think about insect hearing. It goes beyond simply identifying differences between male and female insects.
12. What do sound traps use to attract male mosquitoes?
A. Male mosquito buzzes.
B. Flashing light signals.
C. Female mosquito wingbeat sounds.
D. Sweet-smelling chemicals.
13. What can we infer about male mosquitoes?
A. They hear wider sound ranges.
B. They avoid 150-500 Hz sounds.
C. They ignore female mosquito wingbeats.
D. They share(all)female mosquito response modes.
14. What is the key reason for male mosquitoes’ better hearing?
A. Larger body size.
B. A smaller AMMC region.
C. Stronger wing vibration.
D. More cilia-related genes.
15. What is the value of the study?
A. It cures mosquito-borne diseases.
B. It clarifies insect evolution process.
C. It stops mosquito reproduction entirely.
D. It helps redesign traps and deepen insect hearing study.

Consuming food can be a pleasurable thing—we enjoy feasting on the mix of tastes and textures and it stops us feeling hungry too.____16____. But what many of us don’t consider is how our emotions are affected by what we put into our stomach.
For me, it’s the unhealthy foods like chocolate that put a smile on my face—well, I do have a sweet tooth! It might seem obvious that’s bad for our waistline, usually makes us happy.____17____. But dietitians tell us that eating bad food for a long time not only leads to many health problems, but it can also affect our mental state and cause depression.
The link between our mind and food has been looked at by scientists. They’ve recently found that it’s the bacteria (细菌) in our body that affect our mood. Researchers in Canada have found that certain “good” bacteria help reduce anxiety in mice.____18____.
Many food products are claiming to be high in such “good” bacteria and some of the best types are homemade food like yogurt.____19____. Maybe I should change my diet to brighten me up! Doctor Michael Mosley would agree. He’s been looking into this for the BBC and says the best food to cheer us up is in a “Mediterranean diet”; olive oil, whole grains, lots of fruits and vegetables. Sugar: terrible for you!
So maybe it’s time to lay off the fatty and sugary things.____20____, even if the science behind it is complex. It’s not rocket science but this is further evidence for the saying “we are what we eat”. There are other factors that can change our mood but it seems we have some ability to improve how we feel by controlling what we put on our plate.
A. I don’t want to give it a try.
B. Eating healthily may seem simple.
C. We are indeed determined by the we eat.
D. This really makes me think twice about what I eat.
E. Food also gives us energy and minerals our body needs.
F. Most of us get this feeling when we use food as a quick pick-me-up.
G. For us humans, this means food with “good” bacteria can improve how we feel.

It was a sunny morning in late May, and the air was filled with a mix of nervousness and hope. Ethan Carter, a 17-year-old high school student, sat in the backseat of a ride-hailing car (网约车), holding his exam bag tightly. He was going to take an exam today. Next to him sat his classmate, Liam Bennett.
They had been good friends since freshman year, often studying together and encouraging each other through tough times. The ride-hailing driver, Mr Henderson, a kind middle-aged man, drove steadily, keeping an eye on the time to ensure they arrived at the exam site on schedule. Ethan took a deep breath, reviewing key knowledge in his mind, while Liam looked out the window, a little anxious yet excited about the upcoming exam.
Suddenly, without any warning, Liam let out a soft groan (呻吟) and fell forward in his seat. His eyes rolled back, and he stopped breathing. Ethan’s heart skipped a beat, and he immediately realized something was terribly wrong. “Liam! Liam, wake up!” he shouted, shaking his friend gently, but there was no response. Mr Henderson glanced at the rear-view mirror, and his face turned pale with panic.
Ethan didn’t hesitate. He had learned first aid in his school’s health class, and all the training kicked in at that moment. He quickly moved Liam into a flat position, checked his pulse and breathing, and found that Liam had suffered a sudden cardiac arrest (心脏停搏). Without wasting a second, Ethan started performing CPR — pressing firmly on Liam’s chest and giving him rescue breaths, repeating the process over and over, his hands shaking but his movements steady.
“Hold on, Liam. You’ll be okay!” Ethan whispered, his voice tight with worry but full of determination. Mr Henderson, realizing the urgency, turned on the emergency lights and honked his horn. He kept reassuring Ethan, “We’ll get to the hospital soon, kid. Keep going, you’re doing great.” Ten minutes later, they finally reached the hospital.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Medical staff took Liam from Ethan’s arms and rushed him to the emergency room.

【答案】8. A 9. D 10. C 11. C

根据第一段“If you proudly believe you’re right in a disagreement with a friend or colleague, a new study suggests why you may actually be wrong. Researchers found that people naturally assume they have all the information they need to make a decision or support their position, even when they do not. The researchers called it the “illusion of information adequacy”.(如果你骄傲地认为自己在与朋友或同事的分歧中是对的,一项新的研究揭示了为什么你实际上可能是错的。研究人员发现,人们很自然地认为自己掌握了做出决定或支持自己立场所需的所有信息,即使事实并非如此。研究人员称之为“信息充足的错觉”)”可知,“信息充足的错觉”会让人们很自然地认为自己掌握了做出决定或支持自己立场所需的所有信息。故选A项。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第三段“The findings showed that the two groups who read half the story — either just the pro-merging or just the anti-merging arguments — still believed they had enough information to make a good decision. “Those with half the information actually show greater certainty in their decision to merge or remain separate than those who had the complete story,” Fletcher said.(研究结果表明,两组只读了一半故事的人——要么只读了支持合并的观点,要么只读了反对合并的观点——仍然认为他们有足够的信息来做出正确的决定。弗莱彻说:“那些掌握了一半信息的人实际上比那些掌握了全部信息的人在决定合并或保持分离时表现出更大的确定性。”)”可推知,片面的信息阅读者对决策更有信心。故选D项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“These discoveries enhance our understanding of naïve realism, where individuals perceive their personal viewpoints as the factual reality, as Fletcher noted. Research on naïve realism often focuses on how people have different understandings of the same situation.(这些发现增进了我们对天真现实主义的理解,即如弗莱彻所指出的,个体将其个人观点视为事实真相。关于天真现实主义的研究通常关注人们如何对同一情境有不同的理解)”可知,天真现实主义指的是个人将他们的个人观点视为事实现实,所以C项“一名司机坚称,对方应负全部责任。”可以说明天真现实主义。故选C项。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段““Your first move when you disagree with someone should be to think, ‘Is there something that I’m missing that would help me see their perspective and understand their position better?” ”Fletcher said, “That’s the way to fight this illusion of information adequacy.”(“当你不同意别人的观点时,你的第一步应该是想,‘我是否遗漏了一些东西,可以帮助我更好地理解他们的观点和立场?’”弗莱彻说,“这就是对抗信息充足错觉的方法。”)”可知,弗莱彻建议思考被忽视的观点。故选C项。
【答案】12. C 13. A 14. D 15. D

The Power of Body Language
Body language plays a vital role in our daily communication. It not only helps express our feelings and attitudes but also makes what we say more vivid and convincing. For example, a warm smile conveys friendliness, and steady eye contact builds trust.
However, body language varies across cultures. In some countries, a thumbs-up indicates approval, but in others, it may be offensive. Similarly, nodding usually means “yes” in many cultures, yet in parts of Greece and Bulgaria, it can mean “no”. Therefore, understanding these differences is key to effective cross-cultural communication.

【答案】 Medical staff took Liam from Ethan’s arms and rushed him to the emergency room. All this happened so suddenly that Ethan felt exhausted and terrified, his hands trembling uncontrollably. Without hesitation, Ethan informed Liam’s parents of the whole incident. Minutes felt like hours until a doctor finally emerged, pulling down his mask with a tired smile. “He is stable,” the doctor announced. “Your quick action restarted his heart and saved his life.” Overwhelmed with relief, Ethan sank into a chair, tears streaming down his face, realizing his friend was safe.
However, when he arrived at the exam center, the teacher gently shook her head. “I’m sorry, Ethan, but the exam has already concluded,” she said softly. Ethan felt a lump in his throat, realizing he had sacrificed his own opportunity. Yet, as he looked at his phone and saw a message from Liam’s parents thanking him, the disappointment vanished. He knew he had passed a far more important test that day — the test of humanity and friendship. Walking out into the sunlight, he felt a profound sense of peace.
