On summer afternoons, streets without trees can become much hotter than nearby parks. This is not only because trees provide shade. They also cool the air through a process in which water moves from their roots to their leaves and then enters the air.
Researchers once compared two streets in the same city. The streets were similar in width and traffic, but one had rows of large trees while the other had almost none. At three o’clock in the afternoon, the tree-lined street was nearly six degrees cooler. People there also walked more slowly, stayed outside longer and were more willing to talk with neighbors.
However, planting any tree anywhere is not enough. Young trees need years to grow, and some kinds cannot live well in dry or crowded places. City planners must consider local weather, soil, underground pipes and the space above roads. They should also choose different kinds of trees, because a single disease could otherwise damage all of them at once.
Trees cannot solve every problem caused by rising temperatures, but they are a practical part of the answer. When cities protect old trees and plant suitable new ones, streets become cooler, cleaner and more pleasant for everyone.
30. How do trees cool the air besides providing shade?
A. By releasing water from their leaves.
B. By stopping all traffic.
C. By making the roads wider.
D. By keeping sunlight in the soil.

A. It had less traffic than the other street.
B. Its trees grew faster than expected.
C. It was cooler and people stayed outside longer.

32. Why should cities plant different kinds of trees?
A. To make every street look the same.
B. To save space above the roads.
C. To reduce the need for water.
D. To avoid losing all trees to one disease.
33. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Why City Streets Need the Right Trees

A school library recently asked 300 students how they preferred to read. About 52 percent chose printed books, 31 percent preferred e-books, and the rest said the form did not matter. The survey also asked students to explain their choices.
Students who preferred paper often said they could focus better when holding a real book. They liked turning pages, making notes in the margins and seeing how much they had read. Several students added that printed books did not bring messages or game notices that could interrupt them.
Supporters of e-books pointed to convenience. One small device can hold hundreds of titles, and readers can change the text size or search for a word immediately. E-books are especially useful when students travel or need a book that the library does not own in print.
The librarian, however, warned against treating the survey as a competition between old and new. She suggested choosing the form according to the task. A printed novel may help with deep reading, while an electronic reference book can make quick searches easier. The important question is not which form is always better, but whether readers understand, remember and enjoy what they read.
34. How many students in the survey preferred printed books?
A. 93.
B. 156.
C. 207.
D. 248.
35. Why did some students prefer printed books?
A. They were always cheaper.
B. They contained more titles.
C. They helped students avoid digital interruptions.
D. They allowed readers to change text size.
36. What advantage of e-books is mentioned?
A. They are easier to search.
B. They improve every reader’s memory.
C. They never need electricity.
D. They are more suitable for all novels.
37. What does the librarian advise students to do?
A. Read only printed novels.
B. Stop using electronic devices.
C. Choose the cheaper form.
D. Select a reading form according to their purpose.

In many Sichuan towns, a teahouse is more than a place to drink tea. Early in the morning, older people arrive with newspapers, while shop owners stop by before opening their stores. By noon, travelers may be asking for directions, and friends may be discussing family news over cups that are filled again and again.
Traditional teahouses are usually simple. Bamboo chairs stand around small wooden tables, and the sound of lids touching cups mixes with conversation. Customers are rarely asked to leave quickly. The slow pace is part of the experience: people have time to listen, exchange information and settle small disagreements face to face.
Modern life has changed this scene. Some young people prefer coffee shops or communicate mostly through phones. To attract them, a number of teahouses now hold storytelling nights, local music shows and short lessons on making tea. Yet owners are careful not to turn every visit into a performance. Regular customers still need a quiet corner for ordinary conversation.
This balance matters because the value of a teahouse does not come only from old furniture or traditional tea. It comes from repeated meetings among people who might otherwise remain strangers. When a place allows different generations to share time and stories, it keeps a community connected even as the city around it changes.
38. What can people do in traditional Sichuan teahouses according to paragraph 1?
A. Only drink expensive tea.
B. Read, ask for help and talk with others.
C. Watch a performance every morning.
D. Buy furniture for their homes.

A. The owners have no other work.

D. The chairs are difficult to move.
40. What are some teahouses doing to attract young people?
A. Offering cultural activities.
B. Removing all bamboo chairs.
C. Replacing tea with coffee.
D. Allowing only phone communication.
41. What does the author think gives a teahouse its real value?
A. Its old furniture.
B. Its low tea prices.
C. Its location in the city.
D. Its role in connecting people.

Every spring, volunteers in several Chinese cities take part in a project called River Watch. They do not need to be scientists. After short training, students, office workers and retired people can all help collect information about nearby rivers.
Each team visits the same section of a river twice a month. Members record the water’s color and smell, photograph plants and rubbish along the bank, and use simple tools to measure temperature and clarity. The results are uploaded to an online map, where changes can be seen over time. If a team notices a sudden problem, such as dead fish or a strong chemical smell, it reports the finding instead of trying to deal with it alone.
At first, some experts questioned whether information collected by ordinary people would be reliable. Project leaders therefore created clear instructions, asked teams to measure each item twice and checked unusual results with professional equipment. After several years, the records have become useful for finding long-term changes that a small group of scientists could not observe so often.
The project has also changed the volunteers. Many say they once passed rivers without noticing them. Now they understand that a clean-looking river may still face problems and that small observations, when gathered regularly, can reveal a larger picture. River Watch does not replace professional science; instead, it allows more people to support it with careful local knowledge.
42. What do River Watch volunteers do?
A. Build new rivers in cities.
B. Teach scientists to use online maps.
C. Clean every polluted river by themselves.
D. Collect regular information about local rivers.
43. What should a team do after finding a sudden serious problem?
A. Report it to the project.
B. Hide the result from the public.
C. Stop visiting the river.
D. Try to solve it without help.
44. How did project leaders improve the reliability of the information?
A. By accepting only scientists as volunteers.
B. By visiting each river once a year.
C. By using clear rules, repeated measures and professional checks.
D. By removing every unusual result.
45. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Online maps are replacing fieldwork.

【答案】例文:
Our school surveyed 200 students about how they travel to school. The results show that 35% walk, 25% ride bicycles, 30% take buses and only 10% come by car.
Students who live nearby usually walk or cycle because these ways are convenient and free. Those who live farther away often choose buses, while some parents drive their children to school for safety or to save time.
In my opinion, walking, cycling and taking public transport are healthier and more environmentally friendly. We should choose them whenever possible and follow traffic rules on the way.

31. What did researchers find about the tree-lined street?
A. It had less traffic than the other street.
B. Its trees grew faster than expected.
C. It was cooler and people stayed outside longer.
D. It was six degrees warmer in the afternoon.
32. Why should cities plant different kinds of trees?
A. To make every street look the same.
B. To save space above the roads.
C. To reduce the need for water.
D. To avoid losing all trees to one disease.
33. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Why City Streets Need the Right Trees
B. How to Drive Safely in Hot Weather
C. Why Old Trees Grow More Slowly
D. How City Roads Are Designed
C
D
39. Why are customers rarely asked to leave quickly?
A. The owners have no other work.
B. The tea takes hours to prepare.
C. A slow pace helps people communicate.

B. Trained citizens can support environmental science.
C. River pollution can be solved in one season.
D. Professional scientists are no longer needed.
