Dear Mr. Chen,
I am writing to ask whether I may change the date of the Green Hills Weekend Camp. I am now registered for the camp from 15 to 17 May. However, our school choir has reached the city final, which will be held on the afternoon of 16 May. Every member must attend the last two practices and the final performance, so I cannot take part in the camp on the original dates.
Could I join the next camp from 22 to 24 May instead? I have checked the camp calendar, and the activities appear to be the same. If that group is already full, I would also be able to attend the first weekend in June. I have paid the camp fee and completed the health form, so I hope these can be moved to the new booking rather than completed again.
I am sorry for the change. I have already read the equipment list and planned my route to the meeting point, and I still very much want to take part. Please let me know whether either of the later dates is possible and whether I need to bring a new permission form.
Thank you for considering my request.
Yours sincerely,
Liu Yan

Li Wen’s class planted wildflower seeds in three trays beside the classroom window. During the first week, green shoots appeared in two trays, but the third remained covered with dark soil. Li Wen checked it every morning. Believing that the seeds needed more help, he added extra water and moved the tray closer to the warm glass.
Several days later, the soil was wet but still empty. Li Wen wanted to throw it away and plant new seeds. His teacher stopped him and asked him to read the label on the seed packet again. It explained that some seeds may stay inactive for a time before they begin to grow. This quiet period, called dormancy, can protect seeds until temperature and water conditions are suitable.
The class moved the tray away from the hot window and allowed the soil to dry slightly. Instead of watering it every day, they weighed the tray and added only the amount that had been lost. Li Wen also wrote down the room temperature. Nothing changed for another six days, and waiting became harder than doing something.
On the seventeenth morning, a small green point finally broke through the soil. More shoots followed over the next two days. The late plants were not weaker than those in the other trays; they had simply followed a different timetable.
Li Wen’s first idea—that no quick growth meant failure—had seemed reasonable because it matched what he could see. The experiment taught him that careful observation also includes knowing when not to interfere. Sometimes a living thing is changing even when no change can yet be seen.
30. What did Li Wen do when the third tray showed no shoots?
A. He gave it more water and warmth.
B. He placed it outside the classroom.
C. He changed all the seeds at once.
D. He covered it with a second tray.

A. Wildflowers grow best in very wet soil.
B. Every seed begins growing at the same time.
C. Warm glass can make seeds stronger.
D. Some seeds remain inactive until conditions are suitable.
32. Why did the class weigh the tray?
A. To compare the size of the new shoots.
B. To find out how many seeds were inside.
C. To control how much water was added.
D. To check whether the window was warm.
33. What lesson did Li Wen learn from the experiment?
A. Quick action always solves a problem.
B. Careful observation sometimes requires patience.
C. Late-growing plants are usually weak.
D. Seed labels provide all the answers.

A weather app may say that there is a 40 percent chance of rain. Some people understand this as meaning that rain will fall during 40 percent of the day. Others think it means that 40 percent of the city will get wet. Neither explanation is necessarily correct.
A rain probability is a forecast made from several kinds of information. Forecasters compare current conditions with similar weather patterns from the past and consider how widely those patterns produced rain. The percentage describes the chance that measurable rain will occur in the forecast area during the stated period. It does not tell every person exactly what will happen at a particular street corner.
The area and time shown by an app therefore matter. A 40 percent chance for a whole city over three hours does not mean that every neighbourhood has the same weather. A shower may pass over one part of the city while another part remains dry. The forecast may also change as new observations arrive, especially when clouds develop quickly.
The number is useful when combined with the rest of the forecast. If rain is likely to begin soon, carrying a light raincoat may be sensible even when the percentage is not high. If the chance is small and the sky is clear, a person may choose differently. Reading the time, area and trend prevents a single number from being treated as a promise or a guarantee.
In this way, a probability forecast is not an answer to the question ‘Will it rain on my street?’ It is information for making a decision under uncertainty. The better question is often ‘What should I prepare for during this period?’
34. What does a 40 percent chance of rain NOT necessarily mean?
A. The forecast covers a stated period.
B. The percentage comes from weather information.
C. New observations may change the forecast.
D. It will rain during 40 percent of the day.
35. What do forecasters consider when making a rain probability?
A. Only the colour of the sky.
B. Similar past weather patterns and current conditions.
C. The number of people carrying umbrellas.
D. The exact weather at every street corner.
36. Why does the writer mention different neighbourhoods?
A. To show that a city forecast may not describe every place equally.
B. To prove that weather apps are never useful.
C. To explain why cities should be smaller.
D. To compare two kinds of raincoats.
37. What does the writer suggest people should do with the percentage?
A. Treat it as a guarantee.
B. Ignore the forecast area and time.
C. Use it together with other forecast information.
D. Wait until rain begins before preparing.

When a group of students began recording the calls of frogs near a rice field, they expected to hear the same sound each evening. Instead, the number of calls changed sharply after rain. Their science teacher explained that frog calls are not simply background noise; they can provide clues about temperature, water and the beginning of the breeding season.
The students placed three simple recorders at different distances from the field. They noted the time, air temperature and amount of rainfall, then compared the recordings with their notes. The nearest recorder picked up the most calls, but it also captured passing tractors and voices. The farthest one was quieter, yet some frog calls were too weak to identify. A recorder in the middle produced the clearest balance.
After several weeks, the recordings showed that calls increased on warm evenings after moderate rain. Heavy rain did not always produce more calls, perhaps because moving water covered the sound or frogs stayed under plants. The students originally assumed that more rain would always mean more frogs calling. Their own records forced them to change that simple explanation.
The project did not count every frog in the field. It could not show whether one frog called many times or many frogs called once. Even so, repeated recordings helped the students notice a pattern that a single visit might miss. They sent the results to a local wetland group, which planned to compare them with records from another field.
The teacher considered the project successful not because it produced a perfect answer, but because the students learned how evidence becomes stronger when observations are repeated, conditions are recorded and alternative explanations are considered. Listening carefully had turned a familiar evening sound into a question that could be investigated.
38. What changed after rain?
A. The size of the rice field.
B. The number of frog calls.
C. The colour of the recorders.
D. The students’ school timetable
39. Why was the middle recorder considered the best?
A. It was closest to the teacher.
B. It recorded neither frogs nor tractors.
C. It provided a balance between clear calls and less outside noise.
D. It was the only recorder used after rain.
40. What did the students first assume?
A. Heavy rain would stop all frogs from calling.
B. More rain would always mean more frog calls.
C. The farthest recorder was always the clearest.
D. Temperature had no connection with frog calls.
41. What limitation of the project is mentioned?
A. The students recorded only one evening.
B. The project could not tell how many frogs made the calls.
C. The recorders could not work near water.
D. The students refused to share their results.

Before an evening shadow-puppet show begins, the screen looks almost empty: a piece of white cloth, a lamp and several thin sticks. Once the light comes on, however, coloured figures appear on the cloth and move with the voices and music. This simple-looking stage has carried stories across parts of Sichuan for generations.
The figures are traditionally made from carefully prepared animal skin. An artist first draws each part, then cuts many small lines and holes into it. Colour is added before the head, arms and legs are joined. Because the pieces can turn at these joints, one figure may bow, walk, ride a horse or raise a cup. The cuts are not only decoration. They also allow light to pass through and make patterns visible on the screen.
A performance depends on close cooperation behind the cloth. One performer may control several figures while speaking for different characters. Musicians follow the action with drums and other instruments. If a figure moves before a drumbeat or a voice arrives too late, the audience notices that the character no longer seems alive. Skill therefore lies in timing as much as in making the figures.
Today, some groups shorten old stories for school audiences and explain the figures before a show. Others use electric lights instead of oil lamps and later let viewers see the work behind the screen. These changes do not remove the old methods. They help first-time viewers understand how a small hand movement creates a clear action on the screen.
The future of Sichuan shadow puppetry will not be protected by keeping every performance the same. It depends on passing on the basic skills—the cutting of the figures, the control of light, and the matching of movement, voice and music—while helping new audiences enter the story. Tradition remains active when its central craft is understood rather than merely displayed.
42. Why are small lines and holes cut into the figures?
A. To make the figures heavier.
B. To help performers remember the story.
C. To join the figures to the white cloth.
D. To form patterns when light passes through.
43. What makes a shadow character seem alive?
A. The close timing of movement, voice and music.
B. The number of figures used in one show.
C. The size of the cloth behind the stage.
D. The use of an old oil lamp.
44. What does the word “They” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. The school audiences.
B. The old stories.
C. The changes made by some groups.
D. The first-time viewers.
45. Which statement best expresses the writer’s view?
A. Traditional shows should never be changed.
B. Basic skills should be preserved while new audiences are welcomed.
C. Shadow puppetry is mainly valuable because of its old lamps.
D. Modern viewers care only about how figures are made.

Dear Mr. Chen,
I am writing to ask whether I may change the date of the Green Hills Weekend Camp.

31. What did the seed packet explain?
