When a bakery opens before sunrise, its first decisions are made by looking at dough rather than a clock. At a small bakery in Leshan, the baker checks the temperature of the mixing room before adding yeast. On a cold morning, the same recipe may need more time to rise, while a warm room can make the dough ready earlier than expected.
The baker does not simply leave the dough beside a heater. Too much heat can make the outside dry while the centre remains uneven. Instead, she covers the bowl, records the room temperature and checks the dough twice by pressing it gently. If the mark slowly comes back, the dough is usually ready for the next step. These small observations are more useful than following a fixed number of minutes.
An apprentice once hurried the process because the shop was busy. The bread looked acceptable after baking, but its inside was heavy and the holes were very small. The baker compared the apprentice’s notes with the previous day’s record and found that the dough had been shaped before it had finished rising. The mistake was not corrected by adding more yeast to the next batch; the timing and temperature had to be considered together.
This method has changed the apprentice’s understanding of a recipe. A recipe gives a starting point, but careful workers also read the material in front of them. In a bakery, patience is not wasted time. It is part of controlling quality.
30. What does the baker check before adding yeast?
A. The price of the flour.
B. The number of customers.
C. The temperature of the room.
D. The colour of the baked bread.
31. Why does the baker check the dough by pressing it?
A. To see whether it is ready for the next step.
B. To make the dough taste sweeter.
C. To cool the bowl quickly.
D. To remove all the yeast.
32. What caused the apprentice’s bread to be heavy?
A. The flour was bought too early.
B. The oven was never turned on.
C. The bowl was covered carefully.
D. The dough was shaped too soon.
33. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?
A. A recipe should never be changed.
B. Quality depends on observing conditions and being patient.
C. Baking is easier before sunrise.
D. Apprentices should work without notes.

People sometimes put a cold drink on a table and find a ring of water beneath it. The water does not usually come through the cup. It forms when water vapour in the surrounding air touches the cold surface and changes into liquid water. This change is called condensation.
Air can hold water vapour, although the amount is not unlimited. Warm air generally holds more vapour than cold air. When air next to a cold cup is cooled, it may no longer be able to hold all its vapour. The extra vapour gathers into tiny drops on the outside of the cup. The same process can make a bathroom mirror turn cloudy after a hot shower.
The speed of condensation depends on several conditions. A drink with ice usually has a colder surface than a drink taken from a cupboard, so drops form more quickly around it. In humid weather, the air contains more water vapour and the ring may appear sooner. A metal cup can also feel wetter than a thick paper cup because metal transfers heat more easily, keeping its outside cold.
Understanding condensation helps explain why wiping the table solves only the visible part of the problem. If the drink remains cold and the air stays humid, more drops will form. Placing the cup on a coaster keeps the water from reaching the table, but it does not stop the change in the air.
34. Where does the water under a cold cup usually come from?
A. From water vapour in the air.
B. From a crack in the table.
C. From the drink passing through the cup.
D. From the coaster under the cup.
35. What happens when air next to a cold cup is cooled?
A. It becomes unable to contain any oxygen.
B. Some water vapour changes into drops.
C. The cup begins to produce new water.
D. All the water in the room disappears.
36. Why may a ring appear sooner in humid weather?
A. The table becomes colder than usual.
B. Humid air contains more water vapour.
C. Paper cups become heavier in summer.
D. The drink is always served with ice.
37. What is the function of the last paragraph?
A. To compare different kinds of tables.
B. To describe how to make a cold drink.
C. To explain why wiping does not stop condensation.
D. To advise people never to use coasters.

At 4:20 on a Friday afternoon, a delivery company’s computer showed that twelve boxes of school uniforms were ready to leave a warehouse in Deyang. Chen Hao, an intern, scanned the labels once more before the truck door was closed. Eleven boxes were going to the same school, but the final screen showed one box with a different district code.
The driver said the printed address looked almost the same and suggested loading it anyway. Chen did not agree. He compared the order number on the box with the digital list and found that two customers had similar school names. One was in the north of the city; the other was in a county more than sixty kilometres away. The sorting system had placed both orders in the same area because one code had been entered incorrectly.
Chen moved the box aside and called his supervisor. Together they checked the original order, corrected the code and printed a new label. The truck left eight minutes later than planned, but every box went to the correct route. On Monday, the supervisor used the case in a short team meeting, not to praise delay, but to explain why the final scan matters.
Speed is important in a warehouse, especially before a weekend. Yet a fast mistake can create a longer journey: the wrong customer must report it, another driver must collect the box, and the correct customer has to wait. Chen’s careful check took only a few minutes and prevented all of these extra steps.
38. What unusual information did Chen Hao notice?
A. One box had a different district code.
B. The truck had no driver.
C. All labels were missing.
D. The uniforms were different colours.
39. Why did the sorting system put two orders together?
A. The schools ordered the same number of boxes.
B. The driver changed the route.
C. One district code had been entered incorrectly.
D. The computer stopped working completely.
40. What happened after Chen reported the problem?
A. The whole order was cancelled.
B. The code was corrected and a new label was printed.
C. The box was sent without a label.
D. The school collected the box itself.
41. What is the main lesson of the passage?
A. Weekend deliveries should always be stopped.
B. Interns should never question drivers.
C. Similar school names should be avoided.
D. A brief final check can prevent costly extra work.

A town market used to give every customer a thin plastic bag, even when the purchase was only a few vegetables. The bags were cheap, but many were used for less than ten minutes. At the end of each market day, shopkeepers found them under tables, caught in fences or mixed with vegetable waste.
The market did not solve the problem by suddenly banning every bag. Instead, the manager placed a small weighing scale near the entrance and asked sellers to record how many bags they used each day. Customers could bring a cloth bag, borrow a reusable basket for a small deposit or pay a modest amount for a paper bag. The choices were explained on a board beside the payment counter.
During the first week, some sellers forgot to record the numbers, and a few customers complained about the deposit. The manager therefore asked two shopkeepers to show how baskets were returned and where the deposit was written down. After a month, the records showed that the number of single-use bags had fallen by about one third. Sellers also noticed that customers who brought their own bags usually bought no fewer vegetables than before.
The market’s experience shows that a change becomes easier when people can see how it works. Measuring use, offering practical choices and explaining a small charge gave sellers and customers time to adjust. The result was not a perfect market, but there was much less plastic waste around the stalls.
42. What problem did the market have at the end of each day?
A. Too many customers left early.
B. Plastic bags were often thrown or mixed with waste.
C. Vegetables could not be weighed.
D. Shopkeepers had no place to sell baskets.
43. What could customers do instead of taking a thin plastic bag?
A. Borrow a reusable basket with a deposit.
B. Take vegetables without paying.
C. Ask sellers to close the market.
D. Use the weighing scale as a bag.
44. Why did the manager ask shopkeepers to demonstrate the basket system?
A. To teach them how to grow vegetables.
B. To make the market open earlier.
C. To explain the return process and deposit record.
D. To replace all sellers with two shopkeepers.
45. What can be learned from the market’s experience?
A. Environmental changes work better when rules are measurable and practical.
B. Paper bags always cost less than plastic bags.
C. Customers will stop shopping if any charge is added.
D. A market can remove all waste in one month.
