Dear Community Office,
I am writing to suggest a few changes to the lighting in Greenbank Community Park. The lights stay on all night and help people walk safely, but some are so bright that light enters nearby bedroom windows. The park also remains bright enough to affect insects and night birds.
The residents do not want the lights removed. Instead, we suggest using lower lights along the paths and adding covers that point the light down. Lamps near the playground could become dimmer after ten o’clock, when few children remain there. Motion sensors could make a lamp brighter for a short time when someone walks past.
Would the office please test these changes on one side of the park for two weeks? During the test, residents could report dark spots, sleep problems or other changes. If the plan works, the same settings could be used in the rest of the park. In this way, safety, rest and the life of the park may all be considered.
Thank you for considering my suggestion. I look forward to your reply.
Yours faithfully,
Wang Lin

The photograph was found in a box under my grandmother’s bed. It showed four young people beside a wooden bridge. On the back, someone had written: “First crossing.” My family had seen the photo many times, but no one had asked what the words meant.
That evening, Grandma recognised herself on the left, wearing a coat that was too large for her. The boy beside her was her brother, Ming. The other two people were not clear in her memory. She said the bridge might have been near the old village school.
My father called his aunt, who was Grandma’s older sister. She remembered more. Many years earlier, the four teenagers had helped carry books across a stream after a wooden bridge had been washed away. A new bridge had just been put up, and they were among the first villagers to walk over it. They took the photograph because the books had finally reached the school safely.
The next morning, Grandma found an old school notebook. Inside its cover was a list of children who had helped that day. The two people we could not name were a young teacher and the village head’s daughter. The notebook also explained the short message on the photo. “First crossing” meant the first crossing of the new bridge, not a journey to another town.
The photograph had looked like a small family mystery. After the calls and the notebook, it became a record of ordinary people doing something useful together. Grandma put it back in the box, but she added a note with the names and the story.

An earthworm may look small and weak, but a group of earthworms can change the soil around them. They live in spaces between soil pieces and eat dead leaves, tiny plant parts and soil. As the food passes through their bodies, it is broken into smaller pieces. The waste they leave behind contains materials that plants can use.
Earthworms also make tunnels as they move. These tunnels give air a way to enter the ground and give water a way to travel down. Without such spaces, hard soil may hold water on its surface after rain, while the roots below remain short of air. The tunnels can make it easier for roots to grow through the soil.
The top layer of a garden often receives leaves and other dead matter. Earthworms pull some of it down and mix it with soil. This process helps form a darker, softer layer. It does not happen in one day, and the result depends on moisture, temperature and the kind of soil. Earthworms cannot repair every damaged field by themselves.
Gardeners can help them by keeping the soil covered with leaves or other natural material. They should avoid pouring harmful chemicals into the ground and should not turn the soil again and again without a reason. Too much disturbance can destroy the tunnels where earthworms live.
In this quiet way, earthworms support a healthy soil system. They do not replace water, sunlight or good seeds, but their work improves the place where plant roots must live.
34. What do earthworms leave behind after eating?
A. Large stones that hold rainwater.
B. Waste containing useful materials for plants.
C. Dry leaves covering every field.
D. Chemicals that kill plant roots.
35. How do earthworm tunnels help the soil?
A. They allow air and water to move through the soil.
B. They stop all water from entering the ground.
C. They make roots grow without sunlight.
D. They keep the soil at the same temperature.
36. What does the word “disturbance” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. A kind of natural material.
B. A useful plant food.
C. A tunnel made by a small animal.
D. An action that damages or interrupts something.
37. Which statement best summarizes the passage?
A. Why gardens need more sunlight.

Long before hybrid rice became widely known, Yuan Longping spent much of his time looking closely at rice plants. Most plants seemed to grow in a similar way. However, one plant could sometimes look stronger or taller than the others. Such differences made him ask: could a useful rice plant help farmers grow more grain?
During one of his early field observations in southern China, Yuan noticed an unusual rice plant among many others. It was healthy and stood out from the plants around it, but its flowers did not produce normal pollen. This meant that the plant could not fertilize itself in the usual way. At first, the finding seemed like a problem. For a researcher who wanted to produce new rice varieties, however, it was also an important clue.
Yuan and his team did not decide the value of the plant from one look. They collected seeds and studied the plant again. They also searched for similar plants and examined how rice flowers worked. Their work showed that a male-sterile plant could be crossed with another plant without using its own pollen. In this way, rice with useful qualities might be produced more efficiently.
The observation did not immediately solve every difficulty. Finding suitable parent plants, keeping the process stable and producing enough seed required repeated tests. Some plants did not give the expected result. Careful records and patient field work were as important as the first discovery.
This story explains why close observation matters in science. Yuan did not begin with a perfect answer. He noticed a small difference in a field, asked what it might mean and then tested the idea step by step. The observation of a plant without normal pollen became one part of the research path that later supported hybrid rice studies.
38. What was unusual about the rice plant Yuan noticed?
A. It grew in a completely dry field.
B. It had no leaves at all.
C. Its flowers did not produce normal pollen.
D. Its seeds were already ready to eat.
39. Why was the unusual plant useful to Yuan’s research?
A. It could be crossed with another plant without using its own pollen.
B. It could grow without water or sunlight.
C. It made every nearby plant taller.
D. It needed no further testing.
40. What did Yuan and his team do after the first observation?
A. They stopped studying the field.
B. They collected seeds and carried out more studies.
C. They gave the plant to a school for display.
D. They changed all rice into another crop.
41. What does the passage mainly show about scientific work?
A. A single observation always proves an idea.
B. Farmers do not need new rice varieties.
C. Rice research can be finished in a short time.
D. A small finding needs careful testing and patient work.

For years, people living beside the Longhe River saw few birds on the water. The river passed through the centre of the city, but its banks were hard and bare in many places. After rain, dirty water sometimes ran from nearby roads into the river. This spring, however, residents began sharing a different kind of picture online: water birds standing among the reeds.
The change followed several years of river improvement. Workers removed rubbish, repaired some pipes and built small wetlands beside slow parts of the river. The city also planted local reeds and other water plants instead of covering every bank with concrete. These plants hold soil, slow the water and provide places where small fish and insects can live.
Ms. He, who walks beside the river before breakfast, first noticed two white birds near the east bridge. A week later, she saw more birds in the same area. She said the birds usually stayed quiet when people kept to the path, but flew away when a dog ran into the reeds. Other residents reported seeing ducks and smaller brown birds near the wetland.
According to environmental researcher Chen Wei, the return of birds is a useful sign, but it does not mean the river is perfect. Birds need food, safe resting places and water with suitable conditions. Their appearance suggests that the river now supports more life than before. Regular checks are still needed to watch water quality and protect the new wetlands.
The city plans to put up simple signs asking visitors not to feed the birds or enter the reed beds. Residents have also started a monthly clean-up. The river has not become a wild lake, but its returning visitors show how careful changes can give city nature more room.

A. They arrived only after people fed them.
B. They often stayed quiet when people used the path.
C. They lived under the east bridge.
D. They could not fly away from dogs.
45. What does the researcher’s explanation suggest?
A. The river needs no more checks.
B. Birds are the only sign of water quality.
C. The city should turn the river into a wild lake.
D. The return of birds shows more life, but protection must continue.

Yours faithfully,
Wang Lin

A. They may become dimmer.
B. They may be moved to the paths.
C. They may be covered with flowers.
D. They may be removed from the park.
28. How long do the residents suggest testing the changes?
A. For one evening.
B. For one month.
C. For two weeks.
D. For the whole summer.
29. What does Wang Lin hope the changes will achieve?
A. More children will stay in the playground late.
B. Every part of the park will remain brightly lit.
C. Residents will stop visiting the park at night.
D. Safety, rest and the park’s night life will be balanced.

A. To celebrate a school holiday.
B. To remember a trip to another town.
C. To show their new coats.
D. To record that books had reached the school safely.
33. What does “First crossing” mean in the passage?
A. The first lesson in the village school.
B. The first time Grandma met her brother.
C. The first people walking over the new bridge.
D. The first train passing through the village.

B. How to choose seeds for a field.
C. How earthworms improve soil and how people can protect them.
D. Why earthworms should live only in forests.

42. What did residents begin to see this spring?
A. Water birds among the reeds.
B. New roads across the river.
C. Large boats near every bridge.
D. Concrete covering all the banks.
43. Which change helped create places for small fish and insects?
A. Removing every water plant.
B. Building more roads beside the river.
C. Planting local reeds and other water plants.
D. Asking residents to feed the birds.
44. What did Ms. He notice about the birds?
