Dear Mrs. Liu,
Thank you so much for helping my family after last Thursday’s heavy rain. When the road into our community was closed, we could not return home as planned. I was especially worried about the plants on the balcony and our cat, Mimi.
You went upstairs each morning, opened the curtains and checked whether the flowerpots still had too much rainwater. Moving the two smallest pots away from the wet corner saved them from falling over. You also fed Mimi, changed her water and stayed with her for a while. The photo you sent of her sleeping beside your bag made all of us feel much calmer.
We came home on Sunday afternoon and found everything clean and safe. Mimi ran to meet us, and even the young tomato plant was standing straight. My mother has made some apple cakes, and we would like to bring them to you this evening. They are only a small way to show our thanks.
We feel lucky to have such a kind neighbour. Please let us know whenever you need a hand.

A honeybee returning to its home may carry more than nectar. If it has found a rich group of flowers, it can share useful information with other bees through movement. This behaviour is often called the waggle dance.
The dance usually takes place on the vertical surface of the honeycomb. The bee runs forward while shaking its body, then turns and returns to the starting point. It repeats this pattern several times. The direction of the forward run is linked to the direction of the food from the sun. For example, an upward run can mean that the flowers lie toward the sun. A run at an angle gives a different direction.
The length of the shaking part also matters. In general, a longer waggle run points to food farther away. The dance does not work like a street address, but it gives the other bees a useful guide to direction and distance. The smell of the flower carried on the dancer’s body can offer another clue about what to look for.
Other bees stand close and follow the dancer in the dark hive. They receive information through touch, sound and movement. Then some of them fly out and search. Wind, hills and changing sunlight can affect the trip, so they still need to use their own senses outside.
The waggle dance shows how an animal with a small brain can pass on valuable information. It is not human language, yet it helps a bee group use food sources efficiently.
30. Where does the waggle dance usually take place?
A. On the honeycomb inside the hive.
B. On a flower near the hive.
C. In the air above the food.
D. On the ground under the sun.

A. The flowers have a stronger smell.
B. The food source is farther away.
C. More bees should stay in the hive.
D. The sun is about to disappear.
32. What does the smell on the dancer’s body help other bees know?
A. How old the dancer is.
B. When the wind will change.
C. How many bees are in the hive.
D. What kind of flower to search for.
33. Which statement is true according to the passage?
A. The dance gives the exact address of every flower.
B. Every bee that watches the dance finds food.
C. Bees still use their senses after leaving the hive.
D. Bees depend only on sound inside the hive.

After dinner one Saturday, Lin Tao’s mother found that she had cooked too much rice. She wanted to cool the extra rice quickly before putting it into the fridge. Lin Tao was asked to help, but he thought watching rice cool was unnecessary trouble.
His mother divided the rice between two clean, shallow plates instead of leaving it in the deep cooker. One plate held a thick pile, while the rice on the other was spread into a thinner layer. Lin Tao noticed that steam disappeared from the thin layer first. He touched neither sample. Instead, his mother gave him a clean food thermometer and asked him to measure the centre of each plate every five minutes.
At first, Lin Tao wrote down the numbers only because he had been asked. After three readings, however, the difference caught his attention. Both plates began at almost the same temperature, but the thin layer cooled faster because more of its surface met the cooler air. He drew two lines on a piece of paper and began checking the clock himself.
His mother explained that cooked rice should not be left at room temperature for a long time. They were observing only the cooling process, not testing whether old rice was safe to eat. As soon as the rice had stopped giving off strong heat, she covered it and put it in the fridge. The thermometer was washed carefully, and none of the measured rice was eaten during the activity.
Lin Tao had expected a boring task. Instead, an everyday dinner gave him a clear question, changing numbers and an answer he could see. The next morning, he copied the results into a neat table for his science notebook.
34. Why did Lin Tao’s mother put the rice on shallow plates?
A. To make it taste sweeter.
B. To cool the extra rice more quickly.
C. To prepare it for breakfast.
D. To compare two kinds of rice.
35. What first made Lin Tao interested in the activity?
A. The difference between the temperature readings.
B. The smell of the rice in the cooker.
C. His mother’s science notebook.
D. The shape of the two plates.
36. Why did the thin layer cool faster?
A. It started at a lower temperature.
B. It was measured more often.
C. More of its surface met the cooler air.
D. It contained less water than the thick pile.
37. Which action showed attention to food safety?
A. Leaving the rice out until the next morning.
B. Tasting the rice after every reading.
C. Keeping the rice warm in the deep cooker.
D. Refrigerating it after the strong heat had gone.

Students at Mingyuan School looked beyond their classroom walls last week as the school held its first Night Sky Observation Week. From Monday to Friday, over 300 students joined evening activities designed to help them notice the sky above their own town.
The week opened with a short talk in the school hall. Science teacher Gao Lin explained how to find north, read a simple star map and protect night vision. Students were asked to use dim red lights instead of bright phone screens. They also learned never to look directly at the sun through any viewing tool.
Clouds covered much of the sky on Tuesday, but the activity was not cancelled. Younger students recorded cloud movement and listened to stories about how people once used stars to find direction. On Wednesday, the sky cleared. From the playground, groups found the moon, several bright stars and Jupiter with the help of teachers and local astronomy lovers. Two small telescopes were available, but most tasks required only careful eyes and a paper chart.
A popular part of the week was the Light Check. Students walked around the campus and marked lamps that sent light upward instead of toward paths. They found that strong light could make faint stars harder to see. Their suggestions, including adding covers to two lamps, were given to the school.
The final evening ended with students sharing drawings, notes and questions. No prize was offered for finding the most objects. Organiser Chen Mei said the purpose was to build a lasting habit of looking carefully, not to finish a list in one week.
Because of the strong response, the school plans to open a monthly sky corner next term. Students will compare the moon’s changing shape, record visible planets and invite family members to join on clear evenings.
38. Why were students asked to use dim red lights?
A. To protect their night vision.
B. To make the playground warmer.
C. To send messages between groups.
D. To photograph the clouds clearly.
39. What did students do when clouds covered the sky?
A. They went home at once.
B. They used the telescopes to watch the sun.
C. They recorded clouds and heard stories about stars.
D. They moved all activities into the classroom.
40. What did the Light Check help students understand?
A. Every campus lamp should be removed.
B. Upward light can make faint stars difficult to see.
C. Paper charts are brighter than phone screens.
D. The moon changes the direction of streetlights.
41. What is the school planning for next term?
A. A competition with large prizes.
B. A new daytime science class.
C. A trip to a distant astronomy centre.
D. A monthly sky observation corner.

Open a traditional Chinese paper umbrella and two things appear at once: a useful cover from rain and a round picture held above the head. Its quiet beauty comes from many steps in which bamboo, paper, oil and painting work together.
The maker begins by choosing straight bamboo. It is cut into thin ribs of similar length, then shaped and joined around a central pole. This frame must open smoothly and hold an even circle. If one rib is too long or bends differently, the paper surface may not lie flat. Making the frame therefore requires both strength and careful measurement.
Next, strong paper is pasted over the open ribs. The maker works from the centre outward and removes folds before the paste dries. After that, natural oil is brushed onto the paper. The oil helps keep out rain while allowing light to pass through softly. The umbrella is then left to dry in moving air but no strong sunlight, which might change its shape.
Painting gives each umbrella its own character. Flowers, birds, mountains and simple village scenes are common subjects. Artists must consider the ribs below the paper, because every line will be seen across a curved surface. Empty space is important too. A few branches in one corner may balance a bird painted on the other side without filling the whole circle.
The umbrella’s shape has also carried meaning. Its round surface can suggest completeness, while its opening movement may remind viewers of a flower coming into bloom. These ideas add to its use in festivals, performances and family celebrations. Yet its beauty is not separate from its structure: the repeated bamboo lines form part of the design.
Today, visitors can see paper umbrellas in museums, and some young makers use lighter colours or new subjects. Whatever the picture, the central skill remains the same—bringing different materials into balance so that the finished object is practical, light and pleasing to the eye.
42. Why must the bamboo ribs be carefully measured?
A. To help the frame form an even circle.
B. To make the oil dry more quickly.
C. To leave more room for paintings.
D. To give the paper a stronger smell.
43. What is the main purpose of brushing oil onto the paper?
A. To make the umbrella much heavier.
B. To help the umbrella keep out rain.
C. To join the ribs to the central pole.
D. To remove folds from the paper.
44. Why do artists consider the ribs when painting?
A. The ribs decide how long the paint lasts.
B. Pictures can be painted only between two ribs.
C. Each rib must carry a different colour.
D. The picture will be viewed on a curved surface.
45. Which title best covers the main content of the passage?
A. Bamboo in Everyday Chinese Life
B. The Craft and Beauty of Chinese Paper Umbrellas
C. How Rain Changes Traditional Painting
D. New Colours in Modern Museums

Dear Mrs. Liu,
Thank you so much for helping my family after last Thursday’s heavy rain.
Yours sincerely,
Chen Yu

31. What may a longer waggle run show?
