Farah was on her parents’ farm in Malaysia. She heard a funny noise and went to look. She found a baby orangutan (猩猩). It was lonely and scared. Farah went to tell her parents.
“There’s an orangutan sanctuary (庇护地) ten miles from here,” said Dad. “We should call them.”
“Good idea,” said Mom. “I’ll call them now.”
“He looks hungry,” said Dad. “I’ll get him a banana.”
“He needs a name,” said Farah. “I’ll call him Coco.”
A team from the sanctuary arrived quickly.
“Why does Coco have to go to the sanctuary?” asked Farah.
“Orangutans are in danger in their habitat (栖息地) because there are logging sites (伐木点), big farms and illegal (非法的) hunters,” said the sanctuary assistant. “Coco is very young. At the sanctuary, he can grow up safely.”
“What happens at the sanctuary?” asked Farah.
“Well, Coco looks healthy, but tomorrow the vets (兽医) are going to do a check-up and they’re going to give him vaccinations (疫苗). The day after tomorrow, we’re going to send him to the orangutan school at the sanctuary!”
“Orangutan school!” said Farah. “What’s that?”
The sanctuary assistant smiled. “Orangutans usually stay with their mothers for six years. They learn how to live in the jungle. At the sanctuary, they learn from each other. Next week, the team is going to give Coco a buddy — an older orangutan who can teach him. He needs to learn how to find food and where to sleep.”
“Orangutan school sounds fun!” said Farah.
“We’re going to keep Coco at the sanctuary for a while. You can be a volunteer and help out.”

Passage 1
The word “Caotai Banzi” is a special Chinese expression with a new and inspiring meaning. In the past, it referred to small and unprofessional (非专业化的) performance groups. These groups traveled around to perform with simple tools and little money. Later, it became a popular online word to describe messy, unprepared and disorganized (没有条理的) things, which is similar to the English phrase “ragtag setup”. People used to take this word as a negative description for a long time.
However, people’s understanding of “Caotai Banzi” has changed greatly now, thanks to a video by the famous writer Yu Hua. In his video, he explains that this word does not only carry a bad meaning. Instead, it stands for the courage to start something even when you are not fully prepared. It shows the bravery of beginners who dare to try.
Many people’s experiences can explain this new idea. Zhang Xue, once a poor repairman, finally built a world-famous motorcycle brand. He believes that an inexperienced and rough team is not a problem. The most important thing is to take the first step. To realize his dream, he once rode over 100 kilometers by motorcycle just for a short TV appearance, hoping to get the attention of a professional racing team.
A 16-year-old girl in the video also shows the same spirit. She had no filmmaking experience and even forgot to charge her camera. Still, she insisted on making a documentary to follow her dream. These stories tell us that being a new learner is not shameful. Trying bravely and learning while practicing is far more important than being perfectly prepared.
This spirit is rooted in traditional Chinese culture. Chinese people have always respected those who start from nothing and create great achievements through hard work. Turning wasteland into fertile (肥沃的) farmland and lifting a poor family to success all reflect this diligent spirit.
In short, the “Caotai Banzi” mindset (观念模式) brings us a meaningful lesson. We never need to wait for a perfect chance to start. The right time never comes perfectly, but we are always qualified (有资格的)to try, grow and move forward.

Passage 2
Every June, countless Chinese students finish their Gaokao exams. For them, receiving a university admission letter (录取通知书) is always an exciting and memorable moment. In recent years, people have discussed a warm topic: whether university admission letters should be luxurious ( 奢侈的) and fancy, or simple and meaningful.
To solve this problem, China's Ministry of Education set a clear rule before the 2026 Gaokao. It asks all universities to give up expensive packaging and fancy gift boxes for admission letters. Instead, schools are encouraged to use simple single-page letters to welcome new students.
In the past few years, many universities tried to make their admission letters special. They made delicate gift sets with keychains(钥匙扣), souvenirs and creative pop-up cards. Some empty luxury letter boxes were even sold online at high prices. This trend made people focus more on material beauty rather than students’ years of hard work in study.
Many education experts believe this is not a good trend. They point out that the admission letter’s real purpose is to recognize students’ efforts and encourage them for future study. It is not a tool for universities to show off themselves. Simple letters are actually more valuable. They help students understand that a university’s charm lies in its high-quality education and good traditions, not fancy packaging.
Shaanxi Normal University has kept a wonderful tradition for many years. Its senior professors write every student’s name on admission letters with traditional Chinese calligraphy by hand. This simple act is full of sincerity and respect, which is far more touching than any expensive souvenir.
Education researchers also suggest that universities should spend money on teaching resources and student development, instead of useless luxury packaging. True school pride comes from long-term excellent education, not beautiful boxes.
In fact, an admission letter is a symbol of a new start. It carries trust, encouragement and students’ hard-won achievements. Simple paper is enough to represent a bright future. No fancy gifts can take the place of its true meaning.
1. What new rule did China's Ministry of Education make for admission letters before 2026 Gaokao?

3. What meaningful practices do some universities have for admission letters? (list 2 ways)

4. What do you think of simple admission letters? And why?

Passage 3
Many people have seen white Chinese takeout boxes with a red tower printed on them. This classic pagoda (宝塔) pattern often shows up in Western TV shows. However, few people know the tower is not a fake design. It comes from a real ancient building in Nanjing, the Glazed Pagoda of Great Bao’en Temple.
The pagoda has a history of more than 600 years. Emperor Zhu Di built it between 1412 and 1428 to honor his parents. It was a huge nine-floor tower, about 78 meters tall. Its bright glazed (光滑的) walls looked like glass. For this special look, Western people called it the “Porcelain Tower”.
In the past, this pagoda was world-famous. It was seen as one of the world’s greatest wonders, even more popular than the Leaning Tower of Pisa. In the 1600s, a Portuguese ( 葡萄牙的) traveler wrote about its beauty and praised it as great as Roman buildings. It even inspired a tower in London and appeared in Andersen’s fairy tales.
The ancient pagoda was not only beautiful but also smart. At night, people lit lamps inside it, making it shine like a big lantern. It was Nanjing’s tallest building for hundreds of years. Sadly, it was destroyed by war in 1856.
In 2008, scientists found an underground palace at the tower’s old site. They discovered valuable treasures and Buddha relics(佛骨舍利) there, which are very important to Buddhist culture.
Today, people cannot recreate the tower with old materials and skills. So a modern new tower was finished in 2015. Built with steel and special glass, it protects the ancient ruins underneath. Now visitors can climb the tower and enjoy the whole view of Nanjing. This special pagoda shows the long and beautiful cultural connection between China and the world.

Passage 4
Many people worry about theft (偷窃) and danger when traveling abroad. However, China provides an extremely safe living and traveling environment. People can even leave their backpacks unattended (无人陪伴的) in crowded places without losing anything. This high level of safety is an important reason why more and more foreigners love to travel and live in China.
Many foreign visitors and residents have shared their safe experiences in China. Jannelize Bessenger, a South African video blogger, has lived in China for seven years. She once left her bag on a street in Chongqing. To her surprise, all her things were still there after several hours. She also feels safe walking alone on the street late at night. This great sense of security (安全) lets her live a relaxed and comfortable life in China.
She was deeply touched by Chinese people’s kindness as early as 2019. When she got sick in Nanchang, a kind stranger helped her find a hospital and stayed with her until she felt better. The stranger asked for no reward at all. This warm experience made her feel the kindness and care of Chinese people.
Other foreign travelers have the same feeling. Dave Mani, a Canadian vlogger, traveled around China with expensive cameras. He and his wife visited cities and villages without fear. Modern technology also makes their trips safer and easier. Translation tools and safe mobile payment systems bring great convenience to foreign visitors.
Foreign students also feel warm and safe in China. Ana Rosa Neumann Devers, an exchange student from the Dominican Republic ( 多米尼加共和国), enjoys walking around night markets in Harbin. She says local people respect her culture and treat her kindly, which makes her feel right at home.
Global safety reports also show that China is among the safest countries in the world. Local people may take this safe environment for granted, but it is very precious for foreign visitors. China’s safety comes from its kind people, traditional virtues(美德) and modern technology. For every traveler and resident(旅客), China is a safe and welcoming place to explore and live.

Passage 5
In recent years, fewer young kids choose to go to kindergarten. This change will gradually influence the whole school system. In the future, primary schools, middle schools and even universities will also have fewer students. At the same time, more rural children come to cities to study. Such student shifts require people to rearrange (重新安排) school resources in a better way.
Unbalanced education resources are a big problem now. Excellent teaching conditions mainly belong to some famous urban (城镇的) schools. Many parents travel far to send their children to these top schools for better education. This causes two serious problems. Some popular schools are overcrowded(过度拥挤的), so teachers cannot take good care of every student. While some ordinary or rural schools have empty classrooms, which wastes public resources. It is necessary to share education resources fairly among urban and rural schools.
To solve these problems, the government has put forward a new plan for quality education. For a long time, people only paid attention to students’ test scores. However, good education is never just about grades. Students’ personal character, practical skills and creativity are equally important. As AI technology develops fast, creative thinking has become the most important skill for future life. Modern teaching should help every student discover their own talents.
The new plan also stresses the importance of students’ health. Health includes physical health, mental health and the ability to get along with others. Nowadays, many children have health problems such as being overweight or nearsighted(近视的). They also face great study pressure and feel anxious easily. For this reason, schools should encourage students to explore their hobbies and interests. In this way, students can learn to think independently, improve their creativity and build a happy and positive future.
1. What change of students will influence China’s whole school system?

Passage 2
