It was a busy Saturday as usual. Outside, my father and Mr. Patrick were preparing firewood. Inside their own houses, my mother and Mrs. Patrick were busy with spring cleaning.
Somehow a few boys ran to the field with their kites, catching everyone’s eyes nearby. My mother looked at the messy room. Again she looked out of the window. “Come on, girls! Let’s watch the boys fly kites.” On the way, we met Mrs. Patrick, laughing in shame as if she were doing something wrong, together with her girls.
We played with the boys and watched the kites flying higher and higher. Now and then we slowly pulled one kite back, watching it dancing in the wind, and finally brought it down to earth, just for the joy of sending it up again. Even our fathers dropped their tools and joined us. At that moment we were all beside ourselves. Parents forgot their duty, and children forgot their everyday fights.
The strange thing was that we didn’t mention that day afterward. So I locked the memory up in my heart.
Years went on. Then one day I was hurrying about my kitchen, while my daughter was crying, “Go park, see duck.” “No,” I said. “I have lots of things to do.”
My mom, who was visiting us, said, “It’s a warm day with beautiful sunshine. Do you remember the day we flew kites?” I stopped my work with a rush of memories. Then I told my little girl, “Let’s go! It’s too good a day to miss.”
Another ten years passed. I visited the youngest Patrick boy who was badly ill. A smile appeared on his pale face, “Do you remember—no, of course you wouldn’t. It probably didn’t have the influence on you as it did on me.” “Remember what?” “The day we flew kites.”

Is Memorizing Still Necessary in the Digital Age?
In 2026, the question “Do we still need to memorize things when everything can be found online?” has become a hot topic in education circles worldwide. With smartphones and internet access available almost everywhere, many students wonder why they should spend time memorizing facts that can be instantly searched.
A survey conducted by the Chinese Academy of Education in early 2026 found that 67% of middle school students believe memorizing facts is “less important” than it was 20 years ago. However, 89% of the teachers surveyed said memorization is “still essential” for deep learning.
Dr. Zhang Wei, a neuroscientist at Fudan University, explains why memorizing is still important. “When you memorize something, you’re not just storing facts. You’re building neural pathways that help you think. Facts are the building blocks of critical thinking. You can’t think critically about something you don’t know.”
Professor Li Jing from Beijing Normal University agrees. “In the digital age, we need two types of knowledge: foundational knowledge and searchable knowledge. Foundational knowledge—the facts you have in your head—helps you understand new information and connect ideas. Without it, searchable information is just meaningless data.”
However, educators also point out that the way we memorize has changed. Rote memorization—repeating facts without understanding—is outdated. Instead, students should focus on meaningful memorization: understanding concepts, creating connections, and applying knowledge to new situations.
The new national English curriculum standards also reflect this shift. While memorizing vocabulary and grammar rules is still important, the focus has moved to using language in real-life contexts. Students are encouraged to remember not just words, but how to use them.
“The goal is not to memorize everything,” said Dr. Zhang. “The goal is to memorize the right things that help you think, create, and grow. In a world of endless information, what you know in your head is still what matters most.”
1.What percentage of middle school students in the survey think memorization is less important?
A.89%. B.76%. C.67%. D.53%.
2.According to Dr. Zhang Wei, why is memorizing still important?
A.Because tests require memorization. B.Because teachers demand it.
C.Because it is easy to memorize facts. D.Because facts help build critical thinking skills.
3.What is the difference between foundational knowledge and searchable knowledge according to Professor Li?
A.Foundational knowledge helps understand new information.
B.Foundational knowledge is more expensive.
C.Searchable knowledge is more important.
D.There is no difference between them.
4.What do the new English curriculum standards emphasize?
A.Memorizing all vocabulary. B.Using language in real-life contexts.
C.Reading without understanding. D.Avoiding memorization completely.
5.What is the writer’s opinion on memorization in the digital age?
A.Memorization is completely unnecessary.
B.Only online information is reliable.
C.Meaningful memorization is still valuable.
D.Students should stop memorizing facts.

Many of us have happy childhood memories, but as we grow up, we often forget those little sweet moments. Here are some easy ways to keep your childhood memories alive.
First, talk about your childhood memories with your family often. 1 They may remember little stories about you that you have forgotten. For example, your grandma may tell you how you climbed a tree and fell into a neighbor’s vegetable garden when you were 5.
2 You can collect old toys, childhood photos, school reports, and even your old primary school homework. Put these things in a special “memory box”. Every time you open the box, you will remember those old moments clearly.
Another good idea is to record your memories in a diary or a video. 3 You can also film a video of your parents talking about your childhood stories. These records will become very precious when you grow older.
4 When you go back to your old neighborhood, visit your primary school, or eat the snacks you loved as a child, those memories will come back to you quickly.
Most importantly, cherish every small moment in your daily life now. 5
A.Second, keep old objects from your childhood.
B.Today’s little moments will become your sweet memories in the future.
C.You can write down every interesting childhood story you can remember.
D.Doing old activities you loved as a child can also bring back memories.
E.Many people forget their childhood memories when they grow up.
F.Your parents and grandparents are the best people to share these stories with.

【第五关】阅读理解过关(共15小题,每小题2分,共30分)
A
It was a busy Saturday as usual.
1.Who advised the writer to watch the boys fly kites?
A.The writer’s mother. B.Mr. Patrick.
C.The writer’s father. D.Mrs. Patrick.
2.Mrs. Patrick was laughing in shame because she thought ________.
A.she made the room messy B.her girls weren’t good at playing kites
C.her husband would laugh at her D.she should do housework rather than play
3.What does the sentence “we were all beside ourselves” (Paragraph 3) most likely mean?
A.We were angry with each other. B.We were hard on ourselves.
C.We were very excited and happy. D.We were disappointed.
4.What’s the correct order of the events?
①The writer joined the boys in flying kites.
②The writer went to the park with her little girl.
③Some boys were flying kites on a busy Saturday.
④The writer visited the youngest Patrick boy who was badly ill.
A.①②③④ B.②③①④ C.③①②④ D.③②①④
5.The writer tells the story of the youngest Patrick boy to show that ________.
A.flying kites is fun B.childhood friendship lasts forever
C.life is full of ups and downs D.people treasure happy memories
【答案】1.A 2.D 3.C 4.C 5.D
【导语】本文讲述作者和邻居们在周六放风筝的美好回忆,说明美好回忆值得珍惜,并能长久影响人们。
【详解】
1.第二段指出“Come on, girls! Let’s watch the boys fly kites.”,这直接说明是作者的妈妈提议女孩们去看男孩放风筝。
2.第二段提到“On the way, we met Mrs. Patrick, laughing in shame as if she were doing something wrong, together with her girls.”,前文交代当时两家原本都在搞春季大扫除,由此表明Patrick夫人羞愧地笑,是因为她觉得自己本该做家务而不是出去玩。
3.第三段说明“At that moment we were all beside ourselves. Parents forgot their duty, and children forgot their everyday fights.”,父母忘却家务责任,孩子忘却日常争吵,大家沉浸在放风筝的欢乐之中,由此推断这句话表达我们十分兴奋开心。
4.全文事件顺序为:第二段提到“Somehow a few boys ran to the field with their kites...”,对应③;第三段指出“We played with the boys and watched the kites flying higher and higher”,对应①;第六段讲到“Then I told my little...to miss.”,对应②;第七段讲到“I visited the youngest Patrick boy who was badly ill”,对应④,所以正确顺序为③①②④。
5.最后一段表明原文“Do you remember—no, of course you wouldn’t. It probably didn’t have the influence on you as it did on me.”,病重的Patrick男孩依旧牢牢记得放风筝的往事,这说明人们会格外珍视快乐的回忆。

【答案】1.C 2.D 3.A 4.B 5.C
【导语】本文探讨数字时代背诵的必要性,引用调查数据和专家观点,提出“有意义记忆”仍然重要。
【详解】

2.根据第三段张伟博士的表述“Facts are the building blocks of critical thinking. You can’t think critically about something you don’t know.”可知,他认为记忆的重要性在于事实能帮助构建批判性思维能力,其余选项文中均未提及。
3.根据第四段李菁教授的表述“Foundational knowledge—the facts you have in your head—helps you understand new information and connect ideas”可知,基础知识的作用是帮助理解新信息,其余选项的表述均与原文内容相悖。
4.第六段“the focus has moved to using language in real-life contexts”提到,新的英语课程标准强调在真实生活语境中使用语言,其余选项不符合原文表述。
5.通读全文,尤其根据末段关键句子“The goal is to memorize the right things that help you think, create, and grow.”可知,作者反对过时的死记硬背,倡导有意义的记忆,认可其在数字时代的价值,其余选项的表述均与文章传递的核心观点不符。

2.前文介绍了第一条方法,后句说“collect old toys, childhood photos, school reports, and even your old primary school homework”。A项“第二,保留童年的旧物品”引出第二条方法,与后文“收集旧物”的内容一致,且“Second”与上文“First”形成对应。
3.前句说“record your memories in a diary or a video. ”,后句说“film a video of your parents talking about your childhood stories”。C项“你可以写下每一个你能记住的有趣童年故事”承接“写日记”这一方式,与后文“拍视频”并列,都是记录回忆的方法。
4.后句提到“go back to your old neighborhood, visit your primary school, or eat the snacks you loved as a child”,D项“做小时候喜欢的事也能唤起回忆”概括了后文的具体行为,引出第四条方法。
5.前句说“cherish every small moment in your daily life now”,B选项“今天的小瞬间将成为你未来甜蜜的回忆”总结全文,与“珍惜当下”形成呼应,强调现在的小事也会成为未来的美好回忆。
