A
In the summer of 2018, like any typical high school student, I was spending my summer afternoons watching tons and tons of cinema and TV. There was one TV show that drew my attention and I still remember its name — Love Me,If You Dare. The story was so interesting, and the sounds of the Chinese language so interesting, that I followed up that Chinese show with more Chinese shows. However, what I didn’t realize was that I had unknowingly learned some basic pronunciation and many words of Chinese.
In 2020, I made a resolution to learn Chinese seriously. I simply did what most others do — googled how to learn Chinese, and started watching videos that teach Chinese through vocabulary exercises and grammar rules. But in a matter of weeks, I became frustrated. I wasn’t learning anything. It was during this time of frustration that I came across Dr. Stephen Krashen’s theory (理论) on second language acquisition — the process of immersion (沉浸式学习), and specifically Comprehensible Input.
Comprehensible Input totally changed my way of learning Chinese. I gave up the useless videos and traditional methods of study, and instead focused on understandable Chinese content. I also used graded readers and children’s short stories as part of my daily Chinese “studies.” Besides, I made a rule to spend time immersing myself in the language for at least 1-2 hours every day.
Recently, I was excited to see how far my Chinese language journey had taken me! Despite still having a long way to go towards fluency, I take pride in my daily progress. For me, learning a language is an ongoing adventure, filled with small victories and continuous growth.

A.He has developed great fluency in Chinese.

Many of us have to pay fines when we return overdue library materials. Even worse, if we lose the materials, we may have to pay to replace them. While we may dislike these punishments, we should consider ourselves lucky. At least one early library threatened people with much harsher punishments.
The world’s first known library with a system of organization and cataloged materials was in the ancient city of Nineveh, Assyria, near what is now Mosul, Iraq.
Unlike Egyptians, who wrote on a paper called papyrus, Assyrians wrote manuscripts (手稿) on clay tablets (泥板). In the 1800s, archaeologists (考古学家) discovered huge numbers of these manuscripts in Nineveh’s ruins. Scholars were able to read them and found notes at the bottom of each tablet that told who had owned them. They were part of the private library of King Ashurbanipal, who ruled Assyria from 668 BC to 627 BC. Unlike many kings of that time, Ashurbanipal was able to read and write.
Scholars believe that Ashurbanipal’s library contained more than 1,200 titles on thousands of tablets. Many had been taken from defeated enemies during wartime — a common practice at the time. Others had been copied from earlier tablets. The library contained dictionaries as well as tablets on religion, science, magic, and history. It also contained literature, such as the Epic of Gilgamesh, a famous story from the region. Materials were even organized into different rooms, much like today’s libraries.
Although this was a private library, other people could use it. However, unlike today’s library books, materials from Ashurbanipal’s library contained curses (诅咒) threatening the anger of the gods against anyone stealing or writing on the manuscripts. Maybe today’s library fines really aren’t so bad.
35.What can we know about manuscripts in the ancient world?
A.They belonged to religious leaders.
B.They were used as weapons.
C.They contained useless information.
D.They were considered valuable.
根据第四段中“Scholars believe that Ashurbanipal’s library contained more than 1,200 titles on thousands of tablets. Many had been taken from defeated enemies during wartime — a common practice at the time. (学者们认为,阿淑尔巴尼拔的图书馆收藏了1200多部著作,写在数千块泥板上。其中许多是在战时从被打败的敌人手中夺来的——这在当时是一种常见的做法。)”可知,这些手稿在古代被认为是有价值的,才会被收藏和夺取。故选D。
36.What can you infer about ancient Assyria according to the text?
A.It fought many needless wars.
B.It was a powerful kingdom.
C.It was primitive and undeveloped.
D.It was disorganized and lawless.
根据第四段中“Scholars believe that Ashurbanipal’s library contained more than 1,200 titles on thousands of tablets. Many had been taken from defeated enemies during wartime — a common practice at the time. (学者认为,亚述巴尼拔的图书馆藏有数千块泥板,包含1200多个书目。许多手稿是战时从战败敌人那里缴获的(这在当时很常见),另一些则是从早期泥板抄录而来。)”可推知,古代亚述是一个强大的王国,能够在战时从被打败的敌人手中夺取手稿。故选B。
37.Which adjectives best describe King Ashurbanipal?
A.Cruel and greedy.
B.Strict and selfless.
C.Brave and generous.
D.Intelligent and cultured.
根据第三段中“Unlike many kings of that time, Ashurbanipal was able to read and write. (与当时的许多国王不同,阿淑尔巴尼拔能够读写。)”以及第四段中“Scholars believe that Ashurbanipal’s library contained more than 1,200 titles on thousands of tablets. (学者认为,亚述巴尼拔的图书馆藏有数千块泥板,包含1200多个书目。)”可知,他是有文化、有智慧的统治者。故选D。
38.Why might Assyria’s manuscripts have survived while those of ancient Egypt did not?
A.Ashurbanipal’s library was well protected.
B.Clay does not rot (腐烂) as easily as paper.
C.Ashurbanipal placed a curse on the materials.
D.No one was interested in Assyria’s manuscripts.
根据第三段中“Unlike Egyptians, who wrote on a paper called papyrus, Assyrians wrote manuscripts (手稿) on clay tablets (泥板). (与在一种叫做纸莎草的纸上写字的埃及人不同,亚述人在泥板上写手稿。)”可知,埃及人在纸莎草纸上写字,而亚述人在泥板上写字,纸莎草纸容易腐烂,而泥板不易腐烂,所以亚述的手稿得以保存下来,而古埃及的手稿没有。故选B。
