Bertha Ngumbi, my mother, is one of the kindest women I know. However, when I was a child growing up in Kenya with my four siblings (兄弟姐妹), her kindness often annoyed us. Whenever visitors came to our home, whether relatives or strangers, expected or not, my mother would ask us to prepare and serve them black tea. If visitors arrived during lunch or dinner, she would invite them to eat with us, which meant less food for the family. As children, we felt unhappy and sometimes even complained about it.
My sister Faith especially disliked those moments when we had little firewood or when the wood was wet from rain, because making tea became difficult. My sisters and I even believed that some people took advantage of our mother’s generosity by appearing at mealtime.
Years later, after moving to the United States to live and teach, I began to see things differently. My mother’s kindness had deeply influenced me. Even when I struggled myself, I still tried to help relatives, friends, and even strangers. If unexpected visitors came to my house one day, I would warmly offer them tea and food, just as my mother always did.
Wanting to understand the source of her kindness, I asked my mother about it. She explained that she had learned it from her own mother, my grandmother. Growing up in a large family with eight siblings, my mother often returned home from school to discover that some of their lunch had been given away to hungry travelers. Although the children were upset at times, their mother continued helping others whenever she could.
When I asked my mother whether she would have changed if she had known we disliked her generosity, she answered firmly that she would never stop helping people. Today, I fully understand her actions and remain deeply grateful for the compassion (同情) she planted in me.
1. Why did the author dislike unexpected visitors when she was young?
A. They interrupted family activities.
B. Her family had to share meals with them.
C. They always asked for more black tea.
D. Her siblings needed to serve them food first.
2. What did the author do after moving to the US?
A. She avoided bothering others.
B. She lived a poor life for a long time.
C. She kept complaining about her mother.
D. She was friendly towards others.
3. Why did the author ask her mother about her kindness?
A. To memorize her childhood.
B. To express her gratitude.
C. To understand its origin.
D. To change her mother’s mind.
4. How did the author’s attitude to her mother’s kindness change over time?
A. From not understanding it to valuing it.
B. From seeing it as a shame to a road map.
C. From supporting it to complaining about it.
D. From taking it lightly to viewing it as a trouble.
1. B
3. C
2. D
4. A
第四段开头明确说“Wanting to understand the source of her kindness, I asked my mother about it.”,作者询问母亲是为了弄清这种善良从何而来,故选 C。

Using Psychology (心理学) to Keep Your House Tidier
●Use positive self-talk to increase self-belief. When we want to make a change, focusing on the negative probably will lead to giving up. Focus on the positive to further build your self-satisfaction. Imagine yourself succeeding in changing your habit. ____1____.
●Break cleaning into short daily tasks instead of trying to finish everything at once. ____2____. Create work-rest cycles (周期) that fit your energy level, such as 30 minutes of cleaning followed by 30 minutes of rest. This helps prevent tiredness and makes it easier to keep a regular cleaning routine.
●____3____. Many waste free time playing with their phones. But if you take a picture of your rooms before and after a 10-minute pick-up, you will likely be happy about the difference. Such satisfying changes push you to make good use of scattered (零散的) free minutes later.
●Connect boring cleaning with enjoyable daily things to build good habits. Play favorite music or listen to interesting stories while washing floors and cleaning dusty corners. ____4____. These practices greatly reduce your dislike of tidying and help you stick to regular housework.
●Seek help from someone else to encourage you. ____5____. Ask a friend, family member, or even a therapist (治疗师) to help encourage you in your efforts to keep your home tidier. Call them when you start falling into negative thinking or ask them to help you celebrate your wins.
A. Other people’s support is an important factor
B. It will help you feel more confident for the day
C. Identify a long-term goal related to keeping a tidy room
D. Fun matches can create positive feelings toward housework
E. Take before and after photos after every 10-minute quick room tidy

4. D
2. G
5. A
3. E

1. B 空前建议进行积极的自我对话,并想象自己成功改变习惯;B 项“It will help you feel more confident for the day”说明这种积极想象会增强当天的自信,与本段“increase self-belief”呼应,故选 B。
D 项说明有趣的搭配能够让人对家务产生积极感受,与后文“These practices greatly reduce your dislike of tidying”衔接紧密,故选 D。
