Different families have different ways of handling chores and pocket money. Some parents believe that paying children for doing chores teaches important lessons. Others think that chores should be done without rewards, as they believe helping around the house is just what kids should do ____11____ the family.
One common way is to pay kids for each chore—for example, $1 for washing the dishes. Parents who use this way say it teaches kids the ____12____ of working for money. However, some children might ____13____ to help unless they get paid. Another way is to give pocket money weekly if children ____14____ all their chores. This makes chores feel less like work. But the ____15____ is that kids might do chores just for money.
Some parents do not pay kids for chores because they believe it might make children focus more on rewards than on their sense of ____16____. To them, chores are something kids should do as family members. These parents might still give pocket money, but not for chores. They want children to learn how to manage money ____17____. However, children might not understand the relationship ____18____ work and money.
A middle ground (折中的办法) is to pay only for bigger, more challenging chores, ____19____ washing the car, but not for small daily chores like making the bed. In this way, children can learn that helping the family is important, and that extra work can bring extra rewards.
In a word, no single way is perfect. If one way doesn’t work, families can ____20____ another until they find what works best for them.
11. A. as well as B. as part of C. instead of
12. A. treasure B. importance C. money
13. A. forget B. decide C. refuse
14. A. complete B. enjoy C. remember

根据“chores should be done without rewards”以及“helping around the house is just what kids should do”可知,这里强调孩子作为家庭成员,应当把帮助家庭看作自己应该承担的一部分。as part of“作为……的一部分”符合语境。as well as“也”;instead of“而不是”均不符合句意。
根据“pay kids for each chore—for example, $1 for washing the dishes”可知,孩子完成家务可以获得报酬,因此父母希望孩子理解劳动与获得金钱之间的关系,认识工作的价值。
forget“忘记”;decide“决定”均无法与“unless they get paid”形成合理的因果关系。
根据“if children ____ all their chores”可知,获得每周零花钱的条件是把所有家务完成。 enjoy“享受”;remember“记得”均不能与“all their chores”构成合理搭配。
根据“To them, chores are something kids should do as family members”可知,这些父母认为孩子作为家庭成员,本身就有帮助家庭的责任,因此强调的是责任感。 love“爱”;time“时间”均不能与后文“as family members”形成对应关系。
根据“the relationship ____ work and money”可知,表示“两者之间的关系”,固定搭配为the relationship between A and B,意为“A与B之间的关系”。
根据“bigger, more challenging chores”以及“washing the car”可知,后面的“washing the car”是在列举较大、更有挑战性的家务。such as“例如”符合语境。as for“至于”;so that“以便”均不能表示举例。
根据“until they find what works best for them”可知,如果一种处理方式效果不好,就需要换一种方式进行尝试。

Do you like washing the dishes? It’s a daily chore for every family in China. A study shows that it can take up to an hour and a half to wash the dishes, clean pots and tidy up the kitchen. Many people think this chore is boring and tiring. Then a China-made dishwasher is the perfect answer to free up time and bring happiness.
“I bought a dishwasher when I decorated my new home. The dishes are clean after washing, and it saves time for me to do other things,” said Wu Peng, an office worker from Guangzhou.
Dishwashers went into our life in the late 1980s.At that time, they were too expensive for most people, so only some rich families used them. However, in 2015, a Chinese company created the world’s first sink dishwasher This helped the market grow and made dishwashers more common among Chinese families.
In 2023, the dishwashers made in China sold more than the dishwashers from other countries for the first time. In that year, China sold about 1.94 million (百万) dishwashers in China and about 5.8 million dishwashers in other countries. Chinese dishwashers can be so successful because they can clean dishes better and save energy. “The dishwashers are smart and we just need to start it through a button (按钮). And washing the dishes is not boring at all. All my family are happy to do that,” a woman from Chengdu said.
With more and more people around the world looking for a comfortable life, dishwashers can be a great help. As technology keeps improving, the need for dishwashers in China is expected to keep growing. In the future, there may be a dishwasher in every family.

Recently, train companies (公司) have asked people not to eat foods with strong smells on high-speed trains, such as instant noodles (方便面). What do you think? Should trains ban (禁止) instant noodles?
Chen Yi’an: For me, eating food with a strong smell on the train is fine. A train journey often takes many hours, which means eating is important. Fast food like instant noodles is very convenient. Also, fast food is cheap. For example, instant noodles cost only a few yuan, while food on trains often costs more than 40 yuan. Also, it is difficult to decide what food should be banned. Different people have different standards (标准). This makes it hard to create a fair rule.
He Liyan: I believe that instant noodles should be banned on high-speed trains. The air in trains does not move well, so the smell stays for a long time. It can make other passengers feel sick. Passengers can eat before getting on the train or bring other foods like sandwiches, fruits or snacks that have little smell. In public spaces, we should always think about the feelings of those around us. Staying clear of smelly foods is a simple way to show respect and keep the train nice for everyone.
Luo Yiwei: Instant noodles are cheap and easy to make, needing only hot water. If they are banned on trains, many people would lose their easiest meal choice. However, smelly food can affect others. So it is important to find ways to deal with it. For example, the train company could set up a special coach in every train. People who want to eat smelly food could enjoy their meal there. The trains could also sell cheap snacks that don’t smell much.
