A choice worth more than money
1 “One thousand dollars,” said the lawyer. That was what young Gillian got from his uncle’s will. The story “One Thousand Dollars” is a short story by the American writer O. Henry. Like many of his stories, it has a surprise ending.
2 The story is about a young man named Gillian. His uncle dies and leaves him one thousand dollars. But there is a rule. A lawyer tells Gillian: if he spends the money wisely, he will get fifty thousand dollars more. If he wastes it, all the money will go to Miss Hayden, a kind young woman. Gillian thinks about what to do. He does not want to waste the money on silly things.
Sample Writing
3 In the end, Gillian gives the one thousand dollars to Miss Hayden. Then he goes back to the lawyer and says he lost the money by betting on a horse race. By saying that, he gives up the fifty thousand dollars. That is the surprise. He chooses love over money.
4 “One Thousand Dollars” is a warm and thoughtful story. Some people may think Gillian is foolish. But O. Henry does not ask us to laugh at him. Instead, Gillian shows us something important. He has love in his heart, and that is worth more than all the money in the world.

when意为“当……的时候”既可以表示在某一时间点发生的事,又可以表示在某一时间段发生的事。主句与从句描述的动作或事情可以同时发生,也可以先后发生。例如:
When the weather is fine, many people go out for a walk.
When I got home, I found my baby girl singing in the sitting room.
(2) as soon as引导的时间状语从句
as soon as意为“一……就……”,强调动作紧密相连。例如:
My family always go somewhere interesting as soon as the
holiday begins.
We began to work as soon as we got there.
before意为“在……之前”,after意为“在……之后。例如:
All things are difficult before they are easy.
Mother sometimes prepares dinner after I come back from
school.
While they were crossing the Atlantic, many people died.
Don't make any noise while I am recording.
(5)until
He waited until all the guests left.

I have known Bill since he was born.
He has studied very hard since he came to our school.
Please keep sitting where you are.
He is welcome wherever / anywhere he goes.
When you get pocket money, save it.
Save it when you get pocket money.

1. What did Mary spend the most money on?
2. Did Mary spend money on needs or wants? Give examples.
3. What could Mary do differently?
Answer the questions.
She spent the most money on blind boxes.
She spent money on wants, not needs.
She could make a budget, think twice before buying things, and put some money into a dream tin every month. For example, when she wants to buy a blind box, she could ask herself, “Do I really need this?”
Useful expressions
One of the best ways to... is...
Wouldn't it be better to...?
First, we need to... Then we will be able to...
Why don't you simply...?
... can help you save easily.
It may be difficult when you start, but...
First, it's a good idea to use the "dream tin" method . When you get your £30, put £5 in a tin for your dreams first, so you can't spend it.
Second, when you want to buy something like a blind box or a T-shirt, think twice: do you really need it, or just want it? You'll find you can save a lot this way.
Last but not least, keep a spending diary where you record every cost. This way, you'll know where your money goes and can make a better budget.
Now, let's get back where we started: managing money well is the key to never running out!

3. share your opinions on money management, and learn to use the "dream tin" method to plan and save your own pocket money wisely.
Look and Say
What can you see in the picture?
I can see three glass jars with coins inside. A small green plant is growing from the coins in each jar. The left jar has the fewest coins and the smallest sprout, and the middle jar has more coins and a taller plant, and the right jar has most coins and the tallest sprout.
What do you think the picture mean?
The picture means money can grow like a plant if we save and manage it wisely.
Starting Out
Look at the picture and answer the questions.
1 What fun facts about money do you know?
2 How important is money to you?
e.g. The first paper money was invented in China over 1,000 years ago...
e.g. Money is important to me because it helps me buy daily needs and keep the life going smooth. But it is not the most important thing in life—friendship, health and happiness are more valuable.
Read the quotes and answer the questions.
1 What is the opinion about money in each quote?
2 Which quotes do you agree with? Why?
Francis Bacon: Money is useful if you control it, but bad if it controls you.
Zengguang Xianwen: A good person makes money in a fair and honest way.
Benjamin Franklin: Saving money is just as good as earning it.
Which quote do you agree with? Why?
I agree with all three, but I like Francis Bacon’s quote most. Because money can help us live better, but if we love money too much, we may become greedy or unhappy. We should use money, not let it use us.
Understanding ideas
Look at the picture on the right and answer
the questions. Use the words and
expressions to help you.
1What is the girl doing?
2 Why is she doing this?
1
She is putting her pocket money into a moneybox. She is saving her money.

Money teaches Kira to use “dream tins”.
Money helps Kira focus on her most important wishes.
Money tells her to start with what she can do.
Money encourages Kira to take action.
Money tells Kira to use “dream tins” (moneyboxes). She writes one dream on each tin and puts her pocket money inside.
Money says it’s not about how much money you have, but how you use it. So Kira should learn to deal with her money first.
Money advises Kira not to make too many tins. She should just pick the most important wishes so she doesn’t get mixed up.
Finally, Money encourages Kira to make a start and keep her promise to save for her dreams.
Choose three tags for the main idea of the story.
3
dream tin – This is the key method Money teaches Kira to save money for her dreams.
#wish list – Kira makes a list of her most important wishes, which guides her saving.
#managing money – The story starts with Kira wanting more pocket money, and Money explains how to manage what she already has.
Try to summarize the main idea of the story.
The story teaches that instead of just asking for more pocket money, you should make a wish list, use dream tins to save your money, and learn to manage what you already have. This helps you realise your dreams step by step.

Think and Share
1 Do you agree that “ten times more money means ten times
more problems"? Why or why not?
Learning to think for question 1 Sometimes the writer doesn't explain everything in a passage. You need to make inferences.
I partly agree. If you have more money but don’t know how to use it well, you may spend more and have more worries. But if you are careful and wise, more money can help you and your family. So the real problem is not the money itself, but how you manage it.
2 Will you try dream tins for yourself? Why or why not?
Yes, I will try dream tins. Because it is a simple and clear way to save money for my most important wishes. It helps me focus on what I really want and not spend money on small, unnecessary things.

Structure Analysis
Para 1: Lead in the story and introduce the writer.
Para 2-3: Retell the main plot.
Para 4: Share the comment and highlight the theme.
1 What can you tell from “sixty cents of it was in pennies"? Why does the writer include this line in the review?
4
Answer the questions.
We can tell that Della is very poor. She has only $1.87 in total, and 60 cents of it is in small pennies. This shows she has saved every coin she could.
The writer uses this line to show how hard Della tries to save money for Jim's Christmas gift. It makes readers feel her love for Jim, and sets up the story: even though she is poor, she wants to give Jim a nice gift. It also makes the ending more touching.
2 What does the expression "breaks her heart" show about Della? Is her heart really broken?
It shows Della is very sad and upset. She has tried hard to save money, but $1.87 is still not enough to buy Jim a good gift. She feels heartbroken because she can't give Jim the gift she wants.
No, her heart is not really broken. It is a figure of speech. It means she is emotionally hurt, not physically hurt.
3 Why does the writer say the gifts are "useless"?
The gifts are “useless” because Della sold her hair to buy a chain for Jim’s watch, but Jim sold his watch to buy combs for Della’s hair. So neither of them could use the gifts they received. But the writer says they are wise because their love is more important than the gifts.
Think and Share
1 What is the surprise ending of the story? Do you like it?
Della sells her hair to buy Jim a chain for his watch. But Jim sells his watch to buy Della a set of combs for her hair. So their gifts become useless.
Yes, I like it. It is touching and shows how much they love each other. The surprise makes the story unforgettable.
2 Do you agree with the writer's comment on the story? Why or why not?
Yes, I agree.
The writer says Della and Jim are “the wisest” because they have love, which is more important than money. I agree because love and sacrifice are more valuable than any gift. Even though they are poor, their love makes them rich.
Learning to think for question 2 People can have different opinions on the same thing. Learn to see things from a different point of view.
I partly agree. I think love is very important, but money is also necessary for life. We need both love and money to live a happy life.
