Coral reefs take up only a small part of the ocean floor, but they support the richest variety of sea life on earth. Quite a quarter of ocean species depend on these reefs for survival. Besides, they bring great benefits for human societies: they shield coastlines from waves, create chances for tourism and support fishing industries. However, by the end of the 20th century, human activities such as overfishing, pollution and ocean damage, together with frequent illnesses among corals, had reduced coral coverage to half of its original level. Nowadays, global ocean heating makes this environmental trouble far worse. Some scientists warn that coral reefs have reached a critical turning point. Once crossed, most warmwater corals may disappear, and the damage can hardly be repaired.
Much of this worrying judgment comes from a common research standard. It judges coral heat stress by measuring how strong ocean heat waves are and how long they last. Judgments based on this standard suggest that by the end of the 21st century, corals will face deadly heat influences every single year, leaving little room for them to recover.
Still, recent studies offer a more hopeful view. The old research standard supposes corals cannot get used to higher ocean temperatures. Yet collected facts show corals can now survive heat conditions that would have destroyed them fifty years ago. Using ecological models that take coral’s slow change over time into account, scientists point out that if global temperature rise is limited within 2℃ — the goal of the Paris Agreement — coral reefs are likely to recover during the second half of this century. Therefore, chances for survival still exist if we can avoid the worstcase warming situations.
Several practical actions can be taken to give reefs a better chance. At local levels, cutting humancaused pressure produces good results. For example, reasonable fishing rules protect certain kinds of fish that keep harmful water plants under control. Reducing pollution carried from land also helps damaged corals recover. New technical methods can also offer help, though it remains hard to put them into wide use. These local efforts and new techniques can win valuable time. All the same, scientific research points to one truth: the longlasting way to protect coral reefs is to cut greenhouse gas release and reach netzero emissions. The sooner we achieve this goal, the better chance we have to save these valuable ocean living systems.

Coral reefs belong to the most valuable living systems in the ocean. 1 However, human activities and climate change have put them in great danger. Some scientists fear that reefs have reached an unrecoverable turning point.
Scientists have set up a research standard to study ocean heat waves. 2 Studies based on it warn that corals may meet deadly heat every year before 2100 with little possibility to recover.
3 Facts show corals have developed some ability to deal with higher temperatures. Ecological models suggest reefs may get well again in the late 21st century if global warming is kept within 2℃. So hope is not totally gone if we prevent the most serious warming.
We can carry out local and technical work to buy time for coral reefs. 4 Besides, new protective technology is available, though it cannot be widely used for the moment.
Even so, these ways cannot solve the problem completely. 5 Only netzero emissions can offer longterm protection for coral reefs.
A. Yet new studies bring more hopeful opinions.
B. Local work includes proper fishing rules and pollution reduction.
C. They support large numbers of sea creatures and benefit human beings.
D. It is used to measure the heat pressure received by coral reefs.
E. It has solved most of the environmental problems threatening corals.
F. Governments should build more underwater labs for oceanrelated research.
G. The real root of protection lies in cutting greenhousegas release.

Wang Hua took part in a summer fieldstudy program about ocean protection. During the trip, he got a close look at coral reefs. Shocked by the sight of pale, dying corals, he learned about the serious challenges coral reefs were facing. Scientists told him that local protective measures could buy time for corals, but the fundamental solution lay in cutting greenhousegas emissions to reach netzero. Back home, Wang Hua could not get the scene of dying corals out of his mind. He wanted to make small efforts to raise public awareness of coralreef protection among his classmates. Yet he wondered whether his small actions would make any real difference.
Paragraph 1:The next week, Wang Hua organized a small sharing activity in his class.
Paragraph 2:As more students joined in, the influence of their activity spread further.

Paragraph 1:The next week, Wang Hua organized a small sharing activity in his class. He showed photos of fading corals he had taken in the field trip. He told his classmates about the coralreef crisis. He explained that local protection helped win time, but cutting greenhousegas emissions was the key. Some classmates were greatly shocked by the serious situation and began to think about their own daily carbonsaving choices.
Paragraph 2:As more students joined in, the influence of their activity spread further. They put up posters around the campus and called on schoolmates to live a lowcarbon life. Small actions such as saving electricity spread among students. Wang Hua realized individual efforts counted. Though teenagers could not solve the big problem alone, public awareness built by small moves would push people to work for netzero emissions and save coral reefs.
