Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is written by Mark Twain and is seen as one of the great works of American fiction. The 13-year-old Huck tells us about how he gets out of the control of his father who always drinks a lot, his friendship with Jim and their adventures (冒险) on the Mississippi as they journey south.
The Nobel Prize-winning writer Hemingway even said that “all modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huck Finn... There was nothing before. There has been nothing as good since.”
Maikafer, flieg! is a novel written in German. The storyteller in this book is a 9-year old girl Christine who lives in Vienna (维也纳) at the end of World War Ⅱ. The world in a kid’s eyes is sometimes kind of different from that in adults’ eyes. You may know more details about people’s daily life at that time by going on a journey with Christine and listening to the voice deep in her heart.
“Sometimes it makes you laugh, but sometimes it makes you become silent,” said one reader.
Alice in Wonderland is an English novel by Lewis Carroll, a math teacher at Oxford University. It details the story of a young girl who falls through a rabbit hole into a fantasy world. The characters, structure, the crazy imagination, and the way the writer tells the story all make big differences to popular culture and literature.
Unlike other literature works for children at that time, the book doesn’t want to teach or educate kids. It shows that kids can read literature just for fun.
Oliver Twist is the second novel of the English writer Charles Dickens and one of his most popular works. The story is mainly about a boy with no parents who runs away from the workhouse (济贫院) to London and his life in the capital city. Although the main character in this book is a boy, it’s not a children’s book. The book calls people’s attention to different problems in London at that time, including the poor conditions in the workhouses, asking children to work and recruiting (招募) children as criminals.

Many people think warmer weather and shorter winters mean less snow. But David Robinson says higher temperatures may bring more heavy snowstorms. He works as a climate teacher in a New Jersey university.
Temperature change takes place over a very long time. It can form naturally or from human activities like burning gas and coal. This makes CO2 and other dirty gases stay in the air. The gases lock heat on Earth and make the world warmer little by little.
Why does warmer air create more snow? Robinson explains two key things for snow: wet air and cold temperature at or below 0℃. Without moisture (水汽) in the air, there is no rain or snow. Now heavy snowstorms become stronger because warm air holds more moisture.
“The warmer the air becomes, the more moisture it holds. So, if it’s warming and still cold enough to snow, you can get more snow.” Robinson says.
Of the 10 biggest snowfalls in the D.C. region, five happened in the past 25 years, according to the NWS. During that same time period, average winter temperatures in D.C. increased. In 1996, the average winter temperature was 1.8℃. In 2020, it was 6℃.
Weather scientists say winters will get warmer and shorter in the future. Right now it still snows a lot. One day winter may never drop below 0℃, then snow will turn into rain. Before that day, big snowstorms will keep happening.
Robinson warns this warm day may come sooner than we expect. He thinks later people will find today is a critical turning point of climate.
11. What two conditions do we need to make snow?
A. Warm air and high temperature B. Wet air and temperature ≤0℃
C. Dry air and cold wind D. Dirty gas and low temperature
12. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. How Earth’s climate changes. B. What causes rising temperatures.
C. What produces carbon dioxide. D. How pollution influences climate.
13. What is the purpose of Paragraph 5?
A. To introduce D.C. B. To report the biggest 10 snowstorms.
C. To support Robinson’s ideas. D. To show the increase of temperatures.
14. Which is TRUE according to the passage?
A. All heavy snow in D.C. appeared after 1996.
B. Higher temperatures always make snow turn into rain right now.
C. Warm air can hold more moisture than cold air.
D. Climate change only comes from people’s daily activities.
15. Where is the text probably taken from?
A. A science magazine. B. A story book. C. A science fiction. D. A travel guide.
【答案】11. B 12. B 13. C 14. C 15. A

You can also build useful skills, such as working with others, speaking clearly, planning time and solving problems. These experiences may help you become more confident. They can even help you find what you are interested in for the future.
Before you volunteer, think carefully about three things. First, be honest about your time and energy. If you are busy with schoolwork, choose something you can do once in a while or online. Second, keep yourself safe. Learn about the place before you go, and you can volunteer with friends or an adult at first. Third, choose the right activity. A good volunteer job should match both your interests and your abilities. For example, if you enjoy drawing, you may help design posters for a school event.
How can you get started? Make a list of your interests and strengths first. Then look for chances in your school, library, community center or online. Thirdly, you can also ask teachers, parents or neighbors for ideas. After that, contact the group politely. Tell them what you can do and how much time you can give.
Volunteering is not just about giving help. It is also a way to learn, grow and become part of something bigger.

【答案】例文
My Growth Experience
This term, our school held a series of growth-themed events with many wonderful activities. I took part in the Volunteer Service.
I chose this activity because I wanted to improve myself and learn to care about others. Every weekend, we went to the old people’s community. We tidied up their rooms and read newspapers to them. We also listened to their life stories and shared our school life.
This activity has helped me greatly. I used to be shy and self-centered. Now I am patient and good at getting along with others. I’ve learned true happiness lies in giving others warmth. This special experience made me a more responsible person. I will keep doing volunteer work in my free time.
