For most of her life, Natalie Grabow didn’t know how to swim. At 59, she decided to learn so she could face an even bigger challenge: a triathlon “It was a big barrier I had to overcome,” she says.
Now 80, Grabow has become an inspiration. She not only learned to swim and completed a triathlon but also became the oldest woman to finish the tough Ironman World Championship in Hawaii.
In the race, she swam 2.4 miles in the ocean, then biked 112 miles on a road through lava fields and windy coasts. Finally, she ran a full marathon—26.2 miles—on hilly roads. She finished in 16:45:26, well within the 17-hour cutoff time.
“I’m happy and thankful I can still race at my age,” Grabow says. “Triathlon makes me feel strong in mind and body, and it satisfies my competitive spirit.”
Growing up, girls had few sports chances. During her career as a software engineer, Grabow became a dedicated runner but often suffered setbacks from injuries. The triathlon’s cross-training lowered her injury risk.
Asked whether she has any tips for athletes, Grabow said, “Listen to your body, rest when needed, and most importantly, enjoy the journey.”
4. Why did Natalie Grabow decide to learn swimming at 59?
A. To inspire the young. B. To prepare for a triathlon.
C. To avoid getting hurt. D. To set a world record.
5. What do we know about Natalie?
A. She failed to finish the race within the required time.
B. She believed winning is the most important for athletes.
C. She felt discouraged because she often suffered injuries in training.
D. She finished three parts of the race including swimming, biking and running.
6. Which of the following best describes Natalie?
A. Determined. B. Warm-hearted. C. Creative. D. Generous.
7. Which of the following would be the most suitable title for the passage?
A. Learning to swim at 59: A Late Start
B. The Hardest Race in the World: Ironman Hawaii
C. 80-year-old Becomes Oldest Woman to Finish Ironman
D. Tips on Avoiding Injuries in Triathlon Training
Race walking shares many fitness benefits with running, research shows, while most likely contributing to fewer injuries. It does, however, have its own problem.
Race walkers are conditioned athletes. The longest track and field event at the Summer Olympics is the 50-kilometer race walk, which is about five miles longer than the marathon. But the sport’s rules require that a race walker’s knees stay straight through most of the leg swing and one foot remain in contact (接触) with the ground at all times. However, it’s this strange form that makes race walking such an attractive activity, says Jaclyn Norberg, an assistant professor of exercise science at Salem State University in Salem, Mass.
Like running, race walking is physically demanding, she says. According to most calculations, race walkers moving at a pace of six miles per hour would burn about 800 calories (卡路里) per hour, which is approximately twice as many as they would burn when walking, although fewer than running, which would probably burn about 1,000 or more calories per hour.
However, race walking does not pound the body as much as running does, Dr. Norberg says. In her research, runners hit the ground with as much as four times their body weight per step, while race walkers, who do not leave the ground, create only about 1.4 times their body weight with each step.
As a result, she says, some of the injuries associated with running, such as runner’s knee, are uncommon among race walkers. But the sport’s strange form does place considerable stress on the ankles and hips, so people with a history of such injuries might want to be cautious in adopting the sport. In fact, anyone wishing to try race walking should probably first consult a coach or experienced racer to learn proper technique, she says. It takes some practice.
8. Why are race walkers conditioned athletes?
A. They must run long distances. B. They have to follow special rules.
C. They are qualified for the marathon. D. They are good at swinging their legs.
9. What advantage does race walking have over running?
A. It’s more popular at the Olympics. B. It’s less challenging physically.
C. It’s less likely to cause knee injuries. D. It’s more effective in body building.
10. What is Dr. Norberg’s suggestion for someone trying race walking?
A. Doing regular exercises. B. Having a medical checkup.
C. Hiring an experienced coach. D. Getting experts’ opinions.
11. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. Race Walking: Fitness Benefits and Form Challenges
B. Running VS. Race Walking: Which Burns More Calories?
C. Avoiding Injuries: Why Race Walking Might be safer Than Running?
D. The Unusual Feature of Race Walking
A recent study has revealed an uplifting connection between grandparents and their cognitive (认知) well-being. Lead researcher Chereches expressed the interest surrounding this vital question: “Many grandparents provide regular care for their grandchildren, but an open question is whether caregiving for grandchildren may also benefit grandparents themselves.” This research aimed to explore the potential health advantages for grandparents who dedicate time to their grandchildren, particularly in decelerating cognitive decline.
Chereches and her team analyzed data from 2,887 grandparents in England. Participants answered survey questions and underwent cognitive assessments three times from 2016 to 2022. The survey inquired about the frequency of their caregiving — whether they were spending nights with grandchildren, caring for them during illness, engaging in play, assisting with homework, or even preparing meals.
The results were heartening! Grandparents who actively participated in childcare, regardless of how often or in what capacity, performed better in memory and verbal fluency tests compared to those who did not engage in caregiving. Excitingly, grandmothers who provided care displayed a slower decline in cognitive performance throughout the study.
“What stood out most to us was that being a caregiving grandparent seemed to matter more for cognitive functioning than how often grandparents provided care or what exactly they did with their grandchildren,” Chereches noted. This suggests that the joy and experience of being involved in caregiving may be more beneficial than the specifics of the activities undertaken.
Age UK has highlighted the immense benefits of this so-called “gran-nannying,” which keeps older adults mentally and physically active while combating loneliness — as long as the caregiving experience remains enjoyable and fulfilling.
This research illuminates the beautiful cycle of care and connection that exists within families, proving that the act of being a grandparent not only enriches the lives of grandchildren but also enhances the lives of grandparents, fostering happiness and vitality in their golden years. Let’s share this wonderful news, encouraging families to embrace the joys of grandparenting!
12. Which can replace the underlined word “decelerating” in paragraph 1?
A. Facilitating. B. Slowing. C. Examining. D. Anticipating.
13. How did the study gather information from the grandparents?
A. By conducting single interviews. B. By directly observing their caregiving.
C. By analysing long-term health records. D. By surveying and assessing repeatedly.
14. What does the author want to emphasize in paragraph 4?
A. Engagement matters more than details. B. Frequency has a decisive role.
C. Specific activities make a difference. D. Emotional joy is more lasting.
15. What could be a suitable title for the text?
A. Grandparents: Best Caregivers for Kids
B. How to Improve Grandparents’ Well-being
C. Childcare Keeps Grandparents’ Minds Sharp
D. The Rising Trend of Grandparent Caregiving

By my early 40s, I had attempted all the hobbies meant to make me feel better about entering middle age. I had taken an improv (即兴表演) class, started learning a new language, and given yoga a second chance. Then, at the height of my despair, I decided to sign up for a ballet class.
“But you’re not very flexible,” my husband gently reminded me. He wasn’t wrong. Yet I was determined to give it a try. I hadn’t expected any of it to stick. But this time, the exact same things that had made me escape the studio as a 10-year-old now brought me joy. And though I’d thought my classes to be physically demanding, I hadn’t expected that my teacher’s command to “take up more space” would change my way of being in the world. When I sighed over my lack of grace in the seemingly simple act, my teacher reminded me that ballet isn’t about perfection. Rather, it’s about striving for perfection.
Slowly, I started becoming more comfortable with the body in the mirror. My posture still needs work, and my jumps are never as high as they feel. But it encourages me that my body isn’t stiff and still functions well. Instead of noticing only the signs of aging, I am now amazed at what my body is capable of. As for the imperfections? They’re part of being alive.
Eight years into my ballet classes, I’m what you would call a lifelong advanced beginner. At the age of 50, I am finally a ballerina, though not the kind that anybody would pay to see on stage. I kept on dancing. When I do my daily ballet class, I focus on my breathing and move my body in ways that always challenge me and remind me of everything that is possible.
16. Why did the author finally attend the ballet class?
A. To follow the fashion. B. To lift her spirits up.
C. To keep a slim figure. D. To seek like-minded friends.
17. What was the author’s dancing experience like?
A. Tough but rewarding. B. Challenging and fruitless.
C. Demanding but heartwarming. D. Comforting and enjoyable.
18. What encourages the author to persist in dancing according to paragraph 3?
A. Her perfect movements. B. The teacher’s strictness.
C. The focus on being alive. D. Her still flexible condition.
19. What message does the passage want to express?
A. Better late than never. B. Better to strive than to arrive.
C. Practice makes perfect. D. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.

Long-distance flights can feel never-ending, particularly if you don’t get any sleep. Counting down the hours or minutes until you can finally get some relief off the plane becomes an obsession (执念). And, even if you do manage to get some rest, sitting upright can harm your neck and back. ____20____ Here are some tips to help you sleep better on airplanes.
____21____ Colin Espie, a sleep expert, says you shouldn’t try to force yourself to sleep. Even though it may seem against common sense, it’s important to try and let yourself fall asleep naturally. Sleep is a natural biological process, and it is much easier to let your body naturally take over.
Choose your seat carefully. If you get the chance to select your own seat, Espie says you should be choosy when it comes to where you sit. Specifically, try to secure a seat away from busy areas on the plane, such as near the service areas where flight attendants may move around at all hours. ____22____
Choose your in-flight refreshments wisely. Many frequent flyers like to bring travel snacks along, especially on long flights. However, snacks with sugar and substances like caffeine, chocolate and alcohol can all affect sleep. ____23____ However, alcohol can have a negative effect on sleep, even if it helps with the onset of sleep.
____24____ If you come prepared in the right mindset and with the right tools, catching some Zs in the air may be easier than you think.
A. Keep the same sleeping schedule.
B. Arrive well-rested and don’t try to force it.
C. Frequent travelers agree sleeping upright is no easy task.
D. You should also try to select seats with extra legroom if you can.
E. Alcohol may help you fall asleep initially, which can be confusing.
F. You can use various online tools to track changes in seat availability.
G. In short, sleeping on a plane doesn’t have to be as bad as it may seem.

Sophia and her best friend, Melody, had been inseparable since middle school. Under the sheltering tree of their friendship, they had shared countless laughs and whispered secrets, though they had different personalities: Sophia preferred quiet reading while Melody loved exploring the new city paths on her old bicycle. Even the strongest trees can be shaken by a sudden storm. One afternoon, a small misunderstanding gathered into a dark cloud that threatened their precious bond.
It began with a crucial literature project that would significantly impact their final grade. Sophia, always the planner, had spent the entire afternoon alone in the quiet classroom preparing their presentation. Her fingers moved quickly and skillfully across the keyboard as she arranged slides and typed notes. Each slide was filled with strong arguments and well-chosen pictures that showed how hard she had worked. As evening approached, painting the classroom windows in shades of orange and grey, she kept looking at the clock. Her worry grew with every minute. Melody was late again. The empty chair beside her seemed to laugh at her, making her feel both lonely and angry at the same time.
When Melody finally rushed in, breathless and upset, her explanation came out as a confused mix of words. “I’m so sorry, but my...” she began, only to be cut off by Sophia whose patience had run out. “Something always happens with you! Do you ever stop to consider how your actions affect others?”
The sharp words flew out, and Melody’s initially apologetic expression hardened instantly. “And you always have to control everything! It’s so tiring trying to meet your perfect standards!” she shot back, her voice shaking with strong emotion. The air in the room became thick and difficult to breathe, filled with their hurt feelings and wounded pride. They picked up their books in angry silence, the half-finished project now representing the broken foundation of their friendship. Walking home on different sides of the street, the setting sun created two separate shadows stretching behind them — a perfect picture of the sudden space that had grown between them.

B 9. C 10. D 11. A

根据文章第二段中的“But the sport’s rules require that a race walker’s knees stay straight through most of the leg swing and one foot remain in contact (接触) with the ground at all times. However, it’s this strange form that makes race walking such an attractive activity, says Jaclyn Norberg, an assistant professor of exercise science at Salem State University in Salem, Mass.
根据文章最后一段中的“As a result, she says, some of the injuries associated with running, such as runner’s knee, are uncommon among race walkers. (因此,她说,跑步时的一些伤害,例如跑者膝关节损伤,在竞走运动员中并不常见。)”可知,与跑步相比,竞走不太容易导致膝盖受伤。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章最后一段中的“In fact, anyone wishing to try race walking should probably first consult a coach or experienced racer to learn proper technique, she says. It takes some practice. (事实上,任何想尝试竞走的人最好先咨询教练或有经验的竞走选手,以学习正确的技巧,她说。这需要一些练习。)”可知,Norberg博士建议任何想尝试竞走的人都应该先咨询教练或有经验的选手,即获取专业人士的意见。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第一段“Race walking shares many fitness benefits with running, research shows, while most likely contributing to fewer injuries. (研究表明,竞走与跑步在健身方面有许多相似之处,而且很可能有助于减少受伤。)”可知,文章首先指出了竞走与跑步一样具有健身益处,以及第三段中“Like running, race walking is physically demanding, she says. (她说,跑步和竞走一样,对身体要求很高。)”以及最后一段中“But the sport’s strange form does place considerable stress on the ankles and hips, so people with a history of such injuries might want to be cautious in adopting the sport. (但这项运动的特殊形式会对踝关节和髋部造成相当大的压力,因此有此类伤病史的人在尝试这项运动时应格外谨慎。)”可知,文章接着分析了其特殊的运动形式带来的挑战,如对脚踝和髋部的压力以及需要专业指导等。因此,A选项“Race Walking: Fitness Benefits and Form Challenges (竞走:健身益处与形式挑战)”最能全面概括文章主旨,符合题意。

B 13. D 14. A 15. C

根据前文“Long-distance flights can feel never-ending, particularly if you don’t get any sleep. Counting down the hours or minutes until you can finally get some relief off the plane becomes an obsession (执念). And, even if you do manage to get some rest, sitting upright can harm your neck and back.(长途飞行会让人感觉没完没了,尤其是在你不睡觉的情况下。
设空位于段首,为本段中心句,根据后文“Colin Espie, a sleep expert, says you shouldn’t try to force yourself to sleep. Even though it may seem against common sense, it’s important to try and let yourself fall asleep naturally. Sleep is a natural biological process, and it is much easier to let your body naturally take over.(睡眠专家科林·埃斯皮说,你不应该强迫自己睡觉。尽管这似乎违反常识,但让自己自然入睡是很重要的。睡眠是一种自然的生物过程,让你的身体自然地接管会容易得多)”可知,本段主要讲述不要强迫自己入睡,所以B项“Arrive well-rested and don’t try to force it.(休息好,不要强迫自己)”符合本段主题。故选B项。
【22题详解】
根据前文“Choose your seat carefully. If you get the chance to select your own seat, Espie says you should be choosy when it comes to where you sit. Specifically, try to secure a seat away from busy areas on the plane, such as near the service areas where flight attendants may move around at all hours.(小心选择你的座位。埃斯皮说,如果你有机会选择自己的座位,你应该在选择座位的时候有所选择。具体来说,尽量确保座位远离飞机上的繁忙区域,比如靠近服务区域,因为空乘人员可以随时走动)”可知,本段主要讲述选择座位,所以D项“You should also try to select seats with extra legroom if you can.(如果可以的话,你也应该尽量选择有额外伸腿空间的座位)”承接上文,继续说明选座位的注意事项,符合语境。故选D项。
【23题详解】
根据前文“However, snacks with sugar and substances like caffeine, chocolate and alcohol can all affect sleep.(然而,含糖和咖啡因、巧克力和酒精等物质的零食都会影响睡眠)”以及后文“However, alcohol can have a negative effect on sleep, even if it helps with the onset of sleep.(然而,即使酒精有助于入睡,它也会对睡眠产生负面影响)”可知,前文提到酒精会影响睡眠,后文说酒精有助于入睡,它也会对睡眠产生负面影响,所以E项“Alcohol may help you fall asleep initially, which can be confusing.(酒精可能会帮助你入睡,这可能会让人感到困惑)”符合本段主题,并和后文构成转折关系。故选E项。
根据后文“If you come prepared in the right mindset and with the right tools, catching some Zs in the air may be easier than you think.(如果你以正确的心态和正确的工具准备好了,在空中打个盹可能比你想象的要容易)”可知,在空中睡觉可能比你想象的要容易,本段是对前文的总结,所以G项“In short, sleeping on a plane doesn’t have to be as bad as it may seem.(简而言之,在飞机上睡觉并不像看起来那么糟糕)”对前文关于在飞机上睡觉的建议进行总结,表明在飞机上睡觉并非那么困难,引出后文关于做好准备就可以睡好的内容,承上启下。故选G项。

Dear Tom,
Having learned that you are torn between free running and group dancing for our upcoming Colorful Break-Time Activity, I am writing to offer my advice.
Personally, I strongly advise you to opt for group dancing. For one thing, this activity fosters teamwork and offers you a golden opportunity to bond with local students, which will surely ease your cultural adaptation. For another, unlike the repetitive nature of free running, group dancing features rhythmic movements and lively music, transforming the break into an uplifting experience. More importantly, it strikes a fine balance between moderate physical exercise and injury prevention — ideal for a refreshing school break.
I truly believe group dancing will bring you both joy and a deeper sense of belonging. Looking forward to moving to the rhythm with you on the dance floor!
Yours,
Li Hua

Paragraph 1: That night, Sophia lay in bed, worried about their relationship and the project. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: The next day, Melody arrived early at the cafe, hoping to continue her interrupted explanation. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One Possible Version:
That night, Sophia lay in bed, worried about their relationship and the project. Tossing and turning for hours, she couldn’t stop replaying their bitter argument. A wave of guilt washed over her as she thought about how she had cut Melody off without letting her explain. Staring at the half-finished slides, she remembered all the creative ideas Melody had contributed. With a heavy heart, she realized her pursuit of perfection had hurt the person who cared about her most. She picked up her phone and sent Melody a message, asking to meet at the cafe the next day.
The next day, Melody arrived early at the cafe, hoping to continue her interrupted explanation. She sat nervously, twisting a crumpled hospital receipt in her hand. To her surprise, Sophia walked in ten minutes early and apologized sincerely for her rudeness. Tears in her eyes, Melody explained that her neighbor grandma had fallen and she had rushed her to the hospital. Relieved and regretful, they hugged tightly. They spent the rest of the morning finishing the project together, knowing their friendship had grown stronger through this misunderstanding.
