The Spring Festival, which falls on the first day of the lunar year, is the most important festival for Chinese people. Weeks before it arrives, every family is busy cleaning the house and decorating the doors with red couplets, which are believed to bring good luck. On New Year's Eve, all family members gather for the reunion dinner, watching the Gala and setting off firecrackers. The highlight comes at midnight, when elders give children red envelopes, passing on their best wishes. More than a holiday, the Spring Festival carries Chinese people's longing for togetherness.
When you visit a Chinese home, you are likely to be greeted with a cup of tea. Tea, discovered in China thousands of years ago, is more than a drink — it is a way of life. In the tea ceremony, people heat the water, rinse the leaves and pour slowly, showing respect to their guests. Tasting the slightly bitter but refreshing tea, one can feel calmness washing over the heart. As the old saying goes, among the seven daily necessities, tea matters in every Chinese household.
Chinese calligraphy, an art with a history of over three thousand years, turns simple writing into beauty. Armed with just a brush, ink and paper, calligraphers create works of endless charm — some powerful like thunder, others gentle like flowing water. Practising calligraphy demands patience and concentration, which is why many learners find it a perfect way to calm the mind. For us Chinese, it is not merely an art form but a mirror of our character.
The Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, when the moon is at its roundest. That night, families sit in the yard, admiring the moon and sharing mooncakes, whose round shape stands for togetherness.
The Dragon Boat Festival, celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, is filled with the sound of drums and cheers. Teams of strong rowers race dragon boats across the river, while families wrap sticky rice in bamboo leaves to make zongzi. The festival honours Qu Yuan, a great poet who loved his country deeply. Tasting the zongzi, we remember not only him but also the spirit of patriotism that has inspired Chinese people for centuries.

Temple fairs are among the oldest forms of public entertainment in China.
Peking Opera, regarded as the essence of Chinese culture, combines singing, dancing, acrobatics and martial arts. The painted faces immediately show whether a character is good or evil. Though the singing may sound unusual at first, the colorful costumes and graceful movements soon draw the audience in. Giving it a chance, you may find yourself attracted by this 200-year-old art.

The dragon dance is one of the highlights of Chinese celebrations. Several dancers hold up the long dragon with poles, making it fly, turn and roll in the air. Alongside it, lion dancers jump and play, bringing luck and driving away evil spirits. The sound of drums and gongs fills the streets, drawing crowds of excited spectators.

Shadow play, an ancient art with over two thousand years of history, tells stories through flat puppets made of leather. Behind a white screen, performers move the figures and sing, while lamps cast their shadows onto the curtain. Watching the shadows fight and dance, children laugh and clap with excitement.
In the early morning, groups of people, young and old, gather in parks to practise Tai Chi. Moving slowly and gracefully, they treat it as a way to exercise the body and calm the mind. Though the movements look gentle, they require balance, focus and control. Practising Tai Chi regularly brings peace to busy modern life.

The guzheng, a Chinese instrument with over 2,500 years of history, produces a sound like flowing water. Plucking the strings, the player paints pictures of rivers, moonlight and rain with music. At a recent culture festival, a young girl played "High Mountains and Flowing Water", and the whole hall fell silent, lost in the melody.

The Forbidden City, standing at the heart of Beijing, was home to 24 emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties.
The Chinese knot, woven from a single red thread, is a symbol of good luck and unity. It hangs by doors during the Spring Festival, on cars for safety and in homes for happiness. Though it looks complex, it is made with one simple technique — weaving, never tying or cutting.
The 24 solar terms, created by ancient Chinese through observing the sun, guide farming activities even today. From "Start of Spring" to "Major Cold", each term tells farmers what to do. In 2016, this system was added to the UNESCO heritage list, praised as "China's fifth great invention".
Traditional Chinese Medicine, with a history of thousands of years, includes herbal medicine, acupuncture and massage. Experiencing this trend firsthand, many foreign visitors find Chinese culture both ancient and young.

(My Favorite Chinese Festival)
Of all the traditional festivals, the Mid-Autumn Festival appeals to me most. Falling on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, it is a time for family reunions.
That evening, my whole family sits in the yard, sharing mooncakes and admiring the full moon. Grandma always tells the legend of Chang'e, while Dad makes tea for everyone. What touches me most is not the delicious food, but the feeling that no matter where we are, we share the same moon.
To me, the festival is more than a holiday — it reminds me of the importance of family and our rich culture. I sincerely hope more people at home and abroad can feel its warmth.
What touches me most 的主语从句是亮点句式。
Dear friends,
Welcome to our Culture Festival! Today I would like to introduce one of the most beloved folk arts in China — paper-cutting.
With nothing but a pair of scissors and red paper, folk artists cut out flying phoenixes, lively fish and lovely pandas. These works are put up on windows during festivals, expressing wishes for happiness and good luck. In 2009, paper-cutting was listed as an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO.
Now it is your turn. In the hands-on session, you will learn to cut your first "Fu" character — the symbol of good fortune. I promise it will be an experience you never forget.
Thank you!
Welcome / Today / Now it is your turn
