In 1926, Gertrude Ederle became the first woman to swim across the English Channel—but the journey to get there was anything but easy. Born in New York to German parents, Ederle learned to swim as a child and quickly fell in love with the water.
By the age of 17, she had already won a gold medal and two bronze medals at the 1924 Paris Olympics. But she wanted more than Olympic glory. She set her sights on the English Channel, a 34 kilometer stretch of water that had been crossed by only five men at the time.
Her first attempt in 1925 ended in failure. After seven hours of swimming, her coach ordered her to stop, fearing for her safety. But Ederle refused to give up. She trained even harder for the next year, this time with a new coach who believed in her.
On August 6, 1926, Ederle entered the water from Cape Gris-Nez, France. The weather was terrible—strong winds and high waves made the crossing extremely difficult. For much of the journey, she was accompanied by boats to guide her and provide her with food and drink. After 14 hours and 34 minutes, she finally reached the shore of Kingsdown, England, becoming not only the first woman but also the fastest person ever to swim the Channel at that time.
When she returned to New York, she was honored with a ticker-tape parade—a celebration usually reserved for war heroes and world leaders. More than two million people lined the streets to welcome her home.

Zheng Chenggong (1624-1662), also known as Koxinga, is best known for setting up Chinese control over Taiwan.
Zheng was born in Hirado, Japan to a Japanese mother and a Chinese father. His father was given an official position by the Ming Dynasty, so he moved to Fujian Province at seven. Zheng was given a Confucian education in Nanjing in 1644.
The next year, the Ming Dynasty gave way to the Qing Dynasty. When Qing Dynasty forces entered Fujian, his father surrendered (投降). But Zheng, being against his father’s orders, made up his mind to rebuild the Ming Dynasty and began to build up land and naval forces (海军).
Over the next 12 years, Zheng had built a strong position on the Fujian coast, centered on the islands of Xiamen and Jinmen. In 1659, Zheng carried out one of his most important actions. With a force of more than 100,000 up the Yangtze River, he succeeded. There, however, wrong decisions led to a terrible loss.
Facing increasing pressure, he hit upon the plan of taking Taiwan from the Dutch (荷兰人). In 1661, he landed on Taiwan and fought for nine months. At last, the Dutch surrendered and left Tainan. Zheng then set up a governing system, settled the island with his soldiers and families from Fujian and spread Chinese culture. His larger goals were cut short by his death in 1662.
At last, Zheng’s plans failed, but he became amazingly popular all over the world. In Japan, the famous play, The Battles of Koxinga (1715), made Zheng as well known to Japanese. In Europe, Zheng was famous for driving the Dutch away. In China, he soon became a popular spirit and cultural hero to the early Chinese in Taiwan. Every year on important national days, China often holds grand military parades (盛大阅兵) in Tian’anmen Square. These parades are not just exciting shows—they carry deep meanings for the country and its people. 52 People of all ages gather to watch, feeling proud of their country.
53 The most impressive part is the soldiers’ march. Soldiers march in perfect lines, keeping step with each other. Their uniforms are neat and clean, and their faces show courage and confidence. Tanks and other military vehicles (军用车辆) move slowly and steadily along the street. Planes fly high in the sky, leaving beautiful colored smoke trails.
What makes a military parade so special? First, it honors (向……致敬) heroes. 54 Many soldiers in the parade are following the spirit of those who fought for our country’s freedom and safety. We remember their hard work and sacrifices (牺牲) through the parade.
Second, it shows our nation’s strength. 55 All the weapons and equipment (武器和装备) on display are made in China, and some are new types that show our technological progress. This tells the world that China can protect its people and keep the country safe.
Finally, a military parade brings people together. 56 When we watch the soldiers’ brave looks and the grand scene, we feel a strong sense of belonging (归属感). We know we are part of a great nation, and we are proud of our shared history and future.
In short, military parades are more than just ceremonies. They help us remember the past, feel proud of the present, and look forward to a better future.

四、任务型阅读

In the remote mountains of Guizhou Province, there is a small village called Shibing. For generations, the villagers lived in poverty because the rocky land made farming extremely difficult. However, everything changed in 2018 when a young university graduate named Zhang Lei decided to return to his hometown instead of staying in the city.
Zhang Lei had studied agricultural science at university. He noticed that although the land was rocky, the climate was perfect for growing a special type of tea. He convinced (说服) the villagers to try planting tea trees instead of traditional crops. At first, many villagers were doubtful—they had never grown tea before. But Zhang Lei offered to teach them and even provided the young plants for free.
The first year was hard. The tea plants required careful attention, and many villagers almost gave up. Zhang Lei stayed with them, sharing his knowledge and encouraging everyone to keep going. By the third year, the tea trees began to produce leaves of excellent quality. A tea company from Shanghai heard about Shibing’s tea and offered to buy all of it.
Today, Shibing is no longer a poor village. The tea fields have brought steady income to every family. More importantly, young people who had left to find work in cities have returned to help with the tea business. Zhang Lei has become a local hero, but he remains humble. “I didn’t do this alone,” he says. “It was the villagers’ hard work and trust that made it possible.”
Zhang Lei’s story has inspired many other young graduates to consider returning to their hometowns. As he puts it, “The countryside is not a place to escape from—it is a place with endless possibilities.”

Ederle’s achievement was more than a sports record. She proved that a woman could do anything a man could do, and she did it by simply refusing to stop swimming.

On the official level, in 1875 the Qing government recognized him as a symbol of loyalty (忠诚) and built a temple to honor him on Taiwan.

四、任务型阅读
阅读下面短文,用英语简要回答下列问题。
