Step 1: Lead-in (5 mins)
1. Greet the students.
2. Video/Picture Talk: Show the picture of a student running for student council. Ask students:
- "What is the boy doing here?" (A. Running for the student council. / B. Sharing daily family life)
- "Do you know anything about student council?"
3. Explanation: Briefly explain what a student council is: a student-elected organization that organizes various school activities, listens to students' ideas, and cooperates to build a more fun, united, and welcoming school.
4. Brainstorming: Ask students: "What activities do you think the student council will organize?" Write their ideas on the board.
5. Purpose: To activate students' prior knowledge about student councils and introduce the topic of the lesson

Step 2: Pre-reading (5 mins)
1. Prediction: Ask students to read the title "Making school a better place" and predict what the passage will be about.
2. Vocabulary Preview: Introduce key vocabulary that students will encounter in the passage.
Step 3: While-reading (15 mins)
1. First Reading (Para 1): Have students read the first paragraph and answer the questions:
- "Danielle is the _______ of the student council and she is in Grade _______ this year."
- "The student council tries to make school more fun, more _______, and more welcoming."
- "Danielle works in Grade 8. (T/F)"
- "Students pick the members of the student council. (T/F)"
2. Second Reading (Para 2-3): Ask students to read paragraphs 2 and 3 quickly and answer:
- "The student council organized an _______ in February this year."
- "They raised money for a _______ during the bake sale."
- "All students had the same ideas for the art festival. (T/F)"
- "They split into three groups for the bake sale. (T/F)"
- "What activity brought them lots of money for charity?"
3. Third Reading (Table Completion - Para 2-3): Have students read carefully and complete the table:
- Art festival: Time (February), Problem (different opinions), What they did (shared ideas, respected everyone), Result (big success)
- Bake sale: Time (—), Problem (need lots of work), Groups (take care of sales, bake treats, promote the sale), Result (raised much money, all proud)
4. Fourth Reading (Para 4): Read the last paragraph and complete the table:
- Problem: It's hard to reach an agreement that satisfies everyone.
- Why: They come from different cultures.
- How: Communicate and try hard to understand each other.
- Purpose: To make school a better place.
Step 4: Language Points (10 mins)
1. Explanation: Use the PPT to explain the key language points with clear examples:
- president: president of the student council; president of...
- opinion: have different opinions on; in one's opinion
- charity: raise money for charity; charity sale

2. Practice: Complete the diary entry exercise on the PPT (share...with, divide into, make sure, do one's part). Check answers together.
3. Quiz: Complete the multiple-choice exercises on the PPT. Check answers together.
Step 5: Post-reading & Role-play (10 mins)
1. Retelling: Ask students to retell the art festival and bake sale using expressions from the text.
2. Role-play (Student Council Meeting):
- Scene: Student Council Meeting
- Time: Friday afternoon
- Groups: Divide into groups to plan a new school activity.
- Sentences: "In my opinion, we can...", "I love your idea. Let's share ideas together.", "We can mix all good ideas to reach an agreement."
- Activity Options:
- Book Charity Day: Collect books / Sort books / Sell books → Goal: Share reading & help poor kids
- Cultural Sharing Week: Show traditional clothes / Introduce hometown culture / Make display boards → Goal: Learn to accept different cultures
3. Presentation: Invite groups to present their activity plans to the class.
Step 6: Summary & Homework (5 mins)
1. Summary: Review the key vocabulary and the main message: Working together, respecting different opinions, and cooperating can make our school a better place.
2. Homework:
- Copy the new words and phrases (three times in English, once in Chinese).
- Recite paragraphs 2-3 and write a short imitation passage about a school activity you would like to organize.
- (Optional) Write a short passage: "What can I do for our school?"
